Dot Marcello Walking into Ray can arouse an assortment of emotions based on one’s previous dining experiences. Whether you love, hate, or tolerate Ray, you cannot deny your appreciation for the hard-working Ray workers. As college students, we are pretty good at making a mess, but terrible at cleaning it up. We are glad to consume an immense amount of food, and do so eaasily with pleasure, yet ask us to cook and you might get a different reaction. No matter what the job is, the workers in Ray are always there for us with smiles on their faces, especially those who work by the main doors. Imagine walking into Ray one day and not seeing an eager, friendly face, ready to swipe your card and give you access to the variety of food that you currently desire; something just would not be right with that situation. As a sophomore here at Providence College, I have come to realize that a simple “How are you?” as I walk through the dining hall doors is all I need to turn my day, and dining experience, around. One of these friendly faces that you cannot deny your appreciation and gratitude for is Dot Marcello. After applying for and accepting the job at PC 16 years ago, Marcello can still be found behind the desk at Ray, from the first person she swipes in at lunch, to the last person at the end of dinner. Dot’s favorite part of the job is the PC student body. She says that each of us brighten her day and make her smile everyday; little does she know, she does the same for us. Not only is Dot Marcello a hard-working and eager individual, but she also has a sense of humor. When her twin sister used to work alongside of her, they would switch name tags on April Fools’ Day and joke around with the rest of the staff. On behalf of the PC student body, we thank you, Dot, for all that you do for us! So the next time you step through the dining hall doors, I highly recommend saying hello to everyone you see. You never know whose day you could make with a simple smile.

“Simply said, Philadelphia was awesome! The workshops I attended at the conference reinforced my passion for writing, offered helpful advice that I can apply to my work on The Cowl, and gave me further direction in establishing a writing career someday. Aside from attending the conference itself, I was lucky enough to explore the city of Philadelphia and bond with my fellow Cowl members along the way. I may only be a sophomore, but I can nonetheless say with confidence that this past weekend will forever be considered one ofmy favorite memories at PC.”

“This was my second time leaving New England. Exploring Philly with my fellow Cowlers was both an adventure and a opportunity I never expected I'd have. This trip allowed me to bond on a completely different level with everyone outside of The Cowl ofice. - Austin Harney ’17

“Philadelphia was a fantastic experience both professionally and personally. The workshops were informative, interactive, and inspiring. After attending ‘Ruling with an Iron Fist,’ all I can say to my staff is...be prepared. (Kidding!) More than anything, I was so happy to see the members of our editorial board that attended became that much closer as fellow journalists and as friends. We all became better writers, editors, designers, etc. in our individual workshops; we all became better friends by playing over-sized Jenga in a restaurant near Independence Hall. I think the latter is even more important than the former.”

- Mason Sciotti ’15

“Traveling to Philadelphia with my fellow Cowlers was a great experience that has made my last year at PC even better. Hopefully, my work in The Cowl, as both an editor and a writer, is reflective of the skills and tips I learned after attending workshops and networking with professional journalist during the conference. Some of the best fun though was touring the historic sights that built our nation in downtown Philadelphia and seeing incredible artwork at the Museum of Fine Art. The awesome Philly cheesesteaks didn’t hurt either. After this trip, the editorial board is an even closer-knit group, and better journalists for it.”

“As a first year editor for the Arts & Entertainment section ofThe Cowl, I found the National College Media Convention to be extremely helpful in inspiring new ideas that I can bring to the table to improve not only my section, but The Cowl as whole. After attending the convention, I hope that we can do our best to make our school’s paper as interesting as possible for our readers with some new ideas for design and content. Our trip to Philadelphia was also a great bonding experience for me, with the people I spend hours a week with, and I hope in the future I will have another opportunity to partake in something as great again.”

Who would have ever guessed that the spunky, independent, tough girl P!nk (born Alecia Moore) would turn in her fun-loving, rock-esque anthems and electric guitars for the subtle sounds of an indie/country music cross-over? Probably not many, but believe it or not, this is exactly what the singer has done in her newest music endeavor with Dallas Greene (better known as City and Colour). Green and Moore have been good friends long before their newest collaboration as You+Me, which has only recently begun to gain recognition from the public. Both musicians have explained that the formation of the group has stemmed purely from a passion to work with one another on something new. Above all else, they have described their partnership as nothing more than a “fun hang.” The country-folk duo is a far cry from what most P!nk fans are used to, but the singer does not seem too PHOTO COURTESY OF static.guim.co.uk concerned about losing her own personal acoustic guitar too. No man that lived can avoid our fall, What living means is death, and that is plain; The brightest star is suffering most of all, And light is what he gives, in bearing pain. I fear in him what, dimly, you recall, That we are mad, and being mad is sane. To see the truth is what will terrify, That paradox: to live, therefore, we die.

The bough which bends may break, and that is true, And age may brittle make your steady limbs. But here and now, not I who bent, but you So one is moved, by another’s whims; And I, for you did bend, am bent here too, As melodies and harmonies in hymns, Depart and cross, mysteriously, and find That what is simple may be deep entwined.

Thus ropes are sturdy when they ply on thread, And binding strands will make a stronger whole. When three is one and one is three, then dread Can bay and lick his chops at other souls. For here we are, both bent, but not misled, And knowing what it means to lose control: To give and give yet still be full again, With what has always been beyond our ken.

As children who delight in being kings, And, not mere play, but true to dignity, Which blessing echoes rich, resounds and rings Like when you say three-five one-one five-three; So when we part (and how—so soon!), hope springs, I look and there you are and where I’d be, Ohio. I will meet you there, my friend— There, Love bids us, when rougher world does end.

Indeed, experience from the Big East Championship should be immediately beneficial for the Friars. “For the Big East meet, [Head Coach] Ray [Treacy] told us to run hard from the start and not to let the guys from Villanova settle” Oakley said. “Ben, Shane and Brian did a good job of taking control of the race early but I think they were just too good on the day in a small race like that.” On Nov. 14, Oakley thinks the Friars will be able to take, and keep, control of the race, as Coach Treacy has encouraged them to. “For regionals I think we will need a top three finish to make it to Nationals.
