GRAVE NEGOTIATIONS: THE RHETORICAL FOUNDATIONS OF AMERICAN WORLD WAR I CEMETERIES IN EUROPE by David W. Seitz Bachelor of Arts, Johns Hopkins University, 2002 Master of Arts, Johns Hopkins University, 2005 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2011 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This dissertation was presented by David W. Seitz, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 This dissertation uncovers the processes of negotiation between private citizens, President Woodrow Wilson’s administration, the War Department, and the Commission of Fine Arts that led to the establishment and final visual presentation of the United States permanent World War I cemeteries in Europe (sites that are still frequented by tens of thousands of international visitors each year). It employs archival research and the analysis of newspapers and photographs to recover the voices of the many stakeholders involved in the cemeteries’ foundation. Whereas previous studies have attempted to understand American World War I commemoration practices by focusing on postwar rituals of remembrance alone, my study contextualizes and explains postwar commemoration by analyzing the political ideologies, public rhetoric, and material realities of the war years (1914-1918)—ideologies, rhetoric, and material realities that shaped official and vernacular projects of memory after the Armistice.

  • Remember Death
UNP Remember Death Let us disarm him of his novelty and strangeness, let us converse and be familiar with him, and have nothing so frequent in our thoughts as death. Upon all occasions represent him to our imagination in his every shape; at the stumbling of a horse, at the falling of a tile, at the least prick with a pin. Let us evermore, amidst our jollity and feasting, set the remembrance of our frail condition before our eyes, never suff ering ourselves to be so far transported with our delights, but that we have some intervals of refl ecting upon, and considering how many several ways this jollity of ours tends to death, and with how many dangers it threatens it. Where death waits for us is uncertain; let us look for him everywhere. Th e premeditation of death is the premeditation of liberty. montaigne “Th at to Philosophize Is to Learn to Die” mr. lamb, rush, vocabulary My eleventh-grade Language Arts teacher, Mr. Lamb, was a Deadhead (former or ongoing, I do not know, nor could I divine the depth of his deadication), so he encouraged my vocal annotations beside many of our class vocabulary words. “Rush word!” I would call out (in my more exclamatory days) © 2010 by the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska NOT FOR RESALE OR REDISTRIBUTION when we happened across panacea or somnolent or unobtrusive or, it seems, hundreds of others that I had learned through listening — If I may briefl y break stride, I must admit my UNPconsterna- tion to live in a world where my habitual mentions of Rush inevitably bring the question “Rush Limbaugh?” Would that I could declare, once and for all, a resounding no.

  • Monster Future Album Download Monster
Monster future album download Monster. The 13th mixtape from Atlanta trapper-turned-rapper Future, Monster is the first project in a three-part series following the release of 2014 album Honest. Executive-produced by trap prodigy Metro Boomin, the project delves into all aspects of the genre, from the frantic hedonism of "After That" to the pain-drenched crooning of "Hardly." Capped off with the deeply personal "Codeine Crazy," the project marks a newfound vulnerability for the Atlanta star, while retaining the booming trap sonics that made mixtapes like Astronaut Status and Dirty Sprite so compelling. Monster. As planned, Future drops off his brand new mixtape "Monster". With Halloween three days away, Future decides to get in the holiday spirit and release this fitting new mixtape called  Monster . Executive produced by fellow Atlanta native Metro Boomin, the project contains 16 tracks and features only YMCMB boss Lil Wayne on the track "After That". Meanwhile, production on the tape is being handled by some of the hottest producers in the game, including DJ Dahi, Dun Deal, Metro Boomin, DJ Spinz, Southside, DJ Plugg, and more. This serves as Future's first project since the release of his sophomore album, Honest ,  which dropped back in April. Future - Monster. 01 Future - The Intro 02 Future - Radical [Prod.
