Cause of Death: the Role of Anthropology in the Enforcement of Human Rights
Forward The Fellows Program in the Anthropology of Human Rights was initiated by the Committee for Human Rights (CfHR) in 2002. Positions provide recipients with strong experience in human rights work, possibilities for publication, as well as the opportunity to work closely with the Committee, government agencies, and human rights-based non-governmental organizations (NGOs). 2003 CfHR Research Fellow Erin Kimmerle is a graduate student in anthropology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Kimmerle came to the position with a strong background in the practice of anthropology in international human rights. Between 2000 and 2001 she served on the forensic team of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in its missions in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. In 2001 Kimmerle was made Chief Anthropologist of that team. Janet Chernela, Chair Emeritus (2001-2003) Cause of Death: The Role of Anthropology in the Enforcement of Human Rights Erin H. I stood alongside Mustafa, a middle-aged man with a hardened look punctuated by the deep grooves in his solemn face. Around us people spilled out into the streets and alleys, horse drawn carts filled with the bounty of the weekly harvest of peppers, potatoes, and onions jockeyed for space on the crumpled cobblestone road. -

Open Linguistics 2017; 3: 145–156 Research Article Open Access Klara Bilić Meštrić*, Lucija Šimičić Language Orientations and the Sustainability of Arbanasi Language in Croatia – A Case of Linguistic Injustice1 DOI 10.1515/opli-2017-0008 Received October 22, 2016; accepted March 1, 2017 Abstract: Despite numerous positive aspects of the global development of language-as-right orientation, we argue that its application is rooted in methodological nationalism, i.e. the idea of society being equal to a nation- state (Chernilo 2006), and the monoglot ideology based on the idea of one proper version of a historically and politically privileged dialect carrying the status of a language. This dominant preconception of social phenomena thus leaves many varieties in a legislative vacuum. As a consequence, language rights, often in the form of more or less mandatory legal instruments, concern only a (politically established) few. When this institutional inadequacy is paired with the existing orders of indexicality, then these varieties face marginalisation processes that render language use even more unsustainable. To address the issue of language sustainability, we analyse the language-as-right, language-as-resource and language-as-problem orientations in Croatia on the case of the Arbanasi, a community of descendants of Catholic albanophones who settled in the periphery of Zadar in the 18th century and whose group identity is marked by significant language loss. We analyse how speakers and community members themselves perceive marginalisation processes, especially concerning linguistic (in)justice that stems from the policies that hinder sustainability of Arbanasi language use in the long run. Keywords: language sustainability, language orientations, language policy and planning, Arbanasi 1 Introduction Languages never operate independently of power relations (Bourdieu 2005), so the question we pose is in what contexts certain languages are perceived more valuable than the others. -

Povišeni sadržaj željeza i mangana u podzemnoj vodi istočne Slavonije nije antropogenog porijekla. Na njihov sadržaj utječu uvjeti u vodonosniku, pH vrijednost i količina otopljenog kisika. A Useful Method for Sex Determination in an Archaeological Skeletal Population?
Journal of Archaeological Science 34 (2007) 905e913 http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jas Odontometrics: a useful method for sex determination in an archaeological skeletal population? Marin Vodanovic´ a,*,Zˇ eljko Demo b, Vera Njemirovskij a, Jadranka Keros a, Hrvoje Brkic´ a a School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb, Department of Dental Anthropology, Gundulic´eva 5, HR-10000 Zagreb, Croatia b Museum of Archaeology, Trg Nikole Sˇubic´a Zrinskog 19, HR-10000 Zagreb, Croatia Received 10 April 2006; received in revised form 2 August 2006; accepted 1 September 2006 Abstract Determining sex is one of the most important steps in the procedure of identification of the unknown person. Teeth are a potential source of information on sex. The research is performed on the total of 86 skulls excavated in the late 19th and early 20th century from the mediaeval cemetery (10th and 11th century) at the archaeological site of Bijelo Brdo near Osijek. The material is stored in the Museum of Archaeology in Zagreb. Sex is determined on the basis of 20 osseal craniofacial, as well as odontometric features. Sexual dimorphism of the odontometric features is tested by the Students’ t-test method. Determining sex on the basis of craniofacial features is possible in 55.8% of the cases. Combining the craniofacial and odontometric features it is possible to determine sex in 86% of the cases. In cases where ante-mortem data on sex are not available it is best to combine a number of different methods in order to raise the level of confidence and the level of success in sex determination. -

Utjecaj Srbijanske Oru@Ane Agresije Na Etni^Ke Promjene U Vukovarsko- -Srijemskoj @Upaniji Od 1991
UTJECAJ SRBIJANSKE ORU@ANE AGRESIJE NA ETNI^KE PROMJENE U VUKOVARSKO- -SRIJEMSKOJ @UPANIJI OD 1991. DO 2001. GODINE Dra`en @IVI] Institut dru{tvenih znanosti Ivo Pilar, Zagreb UDK: 314.9:323.1>(497.5-35 Vukovar)"1991/2001" Izvorni znanstveni rad Primljeno: 4. 11. 2002. U ovome su prilogu nazna~ene najva`nije promjene u etni~koj strukturi stanovni{tva Vukovarsko-srijemske `upanije izme|u 1991. i 2001. godine. -
