This dissertation explores the roots of that encounter by examining perceptions of the sea in late medieval Castile-Leon reflected in art, literature, and law. It analyzes the changing attitudes of the Castilians towards the sea through an examination of its perceived place in their world, underscoring the complexity of Castilian attitudes toward the dangers and opportunities presented by the marine environment. Conceptual separation and union serve as the two foundational concepts employed for the analysis of evidence from each of the three genres under examination. Each genre highlights in various ways either the strong contrast drawn between land and sea or their seeming union conceptually. These complexities are manifest in a broad variety of sources, from collections of miracle tales to fifteenth century romances. Analysis of legal distinctions between land and sea reveal significant differences in perception regarding the nature of each environment and the rights and responsibilities of Castilians acting in either. iv Findings include that artistic sources reveal that a fearful attitude toward the sea accentuated by helplessness before its power dominated thirteenth century imagery, contrasting with the greater unity of land and sea reflected in miniatures from fifteenth century sources. A similar pattern of separation and union emerges in the literary evidence, where fear of the loss of agency when traveling at sea in early sources gives way to fifteenth century examples that praise its value. A comparison of the laws contained in the Siete Partidas with the late medieval records of the Cortes of Castile-Leon reveals that while the Castilian monarchs tended to consider the sea as firmly outside of their realm throughout the majority of the period of this study, strategic necessity led to an inexorable growth in the importance of the sea in the affairs of the kingdom generally. This may be the result of a fragmented pattern in physical geography (e.g. islands separated from the mainland by sea), which renders surface transport impossible; and/ or the outcome of socio-political geography friction (e.g. disputed areas close to the frontier of neighbouring countries) which makes investment in expensive surface transport infrastructure very unappealing. For these reasons, remoter regions and their local societies depend heavily on air transport to ensure accessibility and economic and cultural connectivity to the wider world. Local airports provide the necessary means for airlines to operate their services; in certain cases, however, such airports may be located in a neighbouring country thus raising the levels of complexity in the transport system. Studying, therefore, the range of an airport’s catchment area becomes of great significance.

Honey, Master of Science Utah State University, 2020 Major Professor: Dr. Eric César Morales Program: American Studies This paper examines the shifting portrayals of Pacific Islanders in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) across three generations. As both a popular and historically racially problematic venue, WWE’s politically incorrect programming has played an underappreciated and under examined role in representing the USA. Although 4 many different groups have been portrayed by gross stereotypes in WWE, this paper uses the family of Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson—the Samoan Dynasty—as a case study. The WWE originally presented Pacific Islanders using the most offensive stereotypes, and the first two generations of the Samoan Dynasty had to “play Indian” or cosign onto gross representations of their people to be recognized by American audiences unfamiliar with representations of Pacific Islanders.

Abstract The prediction of freight congestion (cargo peaks) is an important tool for decision making and it is this paper’s main object of study. Forecasting freight flows can be a useful tool for the whole logistics chain. In this work, a complete methodology is presented in order to obtain the best model to predict freight congestion situations at ports. The prediction is modeled as a classification problem and different approaches are tested (k-Nearest Neighbors, Bayes classifier and Artificial Neural Networks). A panel of different experts (post–hoc methods of Friedman test) has been developed in order to select the best model. The proposed methodology is applied in the Strait of Gibraltar’s logistics hub with a study case being undertaken in Port of Algeciras Bay. The results obtained reveal the efficiency of the presented models that can be applied to improve daily operations planning.

Gibraltar became British in 1704 and is a self-governing territory of the United Kingdom which covers 6.5 square kilometers, including the port and harbour. It is believed that Gibraltar has been used as a harbour by seafarers for thousands of years with evidence dating back at least three millennia to Phoenician times; however up until the late 19th Century it provided little shelter for vessels. The article takes Alfonso XI of Castile self-coronation (1332) as a central event, and establishes a conceptual genealogy, significance, and relevance of this self-coronation, taking Visigothic, Asturian, Leonese, and Castilian chronicles as a main source, and applying political theology as a methodology. The gesture of self-coronation has an evident transgressive connotation which deserves particular attention, and could throw some light upon the traditional debate on the supposed “un-sacred” kingship of Castilian kings1. Castillo August, 2017 ii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the role of the Catholic Church in defining racial categories and construction of the social order during and after the Spanish conquest of Mexico, then New Spain. The Catholic Church, at both the institutional and local levels, was vital to Spanish colonization and exercised power equal to the colonial state within the Americas. Therefore, its interests, specifically in connection to internal and external “threats,” effected New Spain society considerably. The growth of Protestantism, the Crown’s attempts to suppress Church influence in the colonies, and the power struggle between the secular and regular orders put the Spanish Catholic Church on the defensive. Its traditional roles and influence in Spanish society not only needed protecting, but reinforcing. As per tradition, the Church acted as cultural center once established in New Spain. However, the complex demographic challenged traditional parameters of social inclusion and exclusion which caused clergymen to revisit and refine conceptions of race and gender.

    THE ‘REX FIDELISSIMUS’ 93 THE ‘REX FIDELISSIMUS’ SPANISH-FRENCH RIVALRY IN THE REIGN OF ALFONSO XI OF CASTILE (1312–1350) by FRANK TANG (Amsterdam)*,** On the 30th of October 1340 the armies of the Castilian king Alfonso XI (1312– 1350) met the allied forces of the Marinid sultan of Morocco and the emir of Gra- nada on the banks of the river Salado in the deep south of Spain. Alfonso, who was supported by his father-in-law Alfonso IV of Portugal and crusaders from all over Europe, was facing superior numbers. Still, the Christians won the battle and crushed the enemy. According to the Crónica de Alfonso el Onceno, which was probably written by Alfonso’s confidant Fernán Sánchez de Valladolid, the Mus- lims suffered severe losses: 200.000 warriors are said to have been killed. Besides, the Christians captured not only the sultan’s harem, but also an enormous amount of silver and gold. As a result the prices of these precious metals dropped consid- erably in places as far away as Paris1. The number of Muslim victims (against on- ly twenty dead knights on Christian side!) is, of course, highly exaggerated. That does not alter the fact that the Battle of Salado is celebrated as one of the great Christian victories of the Reconquest, which had started over 600 years before with the legendary Battle of Covadonga and would be completed 152 years lat- er, when the Catholic Kings Fernando and Isabel took Granada. The danger of an invasion from Africa had been averted once and for all, especially when Alfonso secured Castilian control of the European side of the Straits of Gibraltar by con- quering Algeciras at the end of a long siege in 1344.
