PASTOR’S NOTES 3

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time + Reflection from Brother Nathaniel Everyone loves a free meal. Free food is something that might always catch our attention. Someone once joked with me that he could smell free food from miles away. Free food has the power to bring people together for any gathering. Now, the multitude of people is again looking for Jesus in our Gospel this weekend. He just fed them with an impressive amount of bread and fish, and He sees them wanting more. The people want another free meal. However, Jesus increases their appetite for something greater. The multitude of people might come to Jesus because they need to be fed, but Jesus wants them to come to Him because of who He is and what He does. He never says that bread is bad. The multitude of people should indeed seek bread. They need bread to keep on living, but Jesus will feed them with bread they don’t even expect. He doesn’t only feed them with bread that keeps them alive. Instead, Jesus feeds them with bread that gives them life. That’s what Jesus wants the multitude of people to realize. He wants them to see and believe that it is He Himself that gives life. Jesus even calls Himself the “bread of life.” In other words, Jesus doesn’t just keep us alive. He gives us life. He is our source. Without Jesus, without God, we have no life at all. For Jesus Himself, on whom the Father has set His seal, gives us eternal life. This eternal life is a life that we cannot earn on our own. In fact, we cannot even earn it at all. Jesus will give the bread that gives life to the world through His Death and Resurrection to that multitude of people in today’s Gospel. He will give them a share in His divine life for ages to come. How awesome it is that He has already given that eternal life to us who believe! Let us thank God that He is offering us more than simply another free meal. Let us take some time this week to feed and be nourished on the life Jesus gives us.

PRAISE TO THE LORD GIFT OF FINEST WHEAT LOBE DEN HERREN Omer Westendorf 1. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the king of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation! REFRAIN Come, all who hear: Now to his altar draw near, You satisfy the hungry heart Joining in glad adoration! With gift of finest wheat; Come give to us, O saving Lord, 2. Praise to the Lord, who shall prosper our work and defend us; The bread of life to eat. Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend us. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, 1. As when the shepherd calls his sheep, Who with his love will befriend us. They know and heed his voice; So when you call your fam'ly, Lord, We follow and rejoice. CHRISTIANS, LET US LOVE ONE ANOTHER PICARDY 2. With joyful lips we sing to you 1. Christians, let us love one another, Our praise and gratitude, As we share the true living bread. That you should count us worthy, Lord, Jesus is our God and our brother; To share this heav'nly food. With his flesh and blood we are fed. Ev’ryone who loves is born of God. 3. Is not the cup we bless and share Jesus is our life. God is love. The blood of Christ outpoured? Do not one cup, one loaf, declare 2. We who break this bread are one body, Our oneness in the Lord? We who share this cup are all one. Children of our Father in heaven, 4. The myst'ry of your presence, Lord, We are heirs with God’s only son. No mortal tongue can tell: Ev’ryone who loves is born of God. Whom all the world cannot contain Jesus is our life. God is love. Comes in our hearts to dwell.

5. You give yourself to us, O Lord; Then selfless let us be, LORD, YOU GIVE THE GREAT COMMISSION To serve each other in your name ’S LEIGH In truth and charity.

1. Lord, you give the great commission: 'Heal the sick and preach the word.' Lest the Church neglect its mission, And the Gospel go unheard, Help us witness to your purpose With renewed integrity; With the Spirit's gifts empower us For the work of ministry.
