The funding our District receives from the state is simply not enough. Throughout the country, counties are empowered to decide how much funding to invest in their local education systems. In California, per-pupil funding is determined at the state level. All schools receive funding on a per-pupil basis, and districts with greater numbers of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch, and are English Language Learners receive additional funding. As a result, in 2016/17 MBUSD received roughly $9,600 per student, putting our funding level at the bottom of the state and the country. With an investment of more than $6M from our community, MBEF is able to increase per student spending by nearly 9%. In the 2017/18 school year, donations to MBEF will pay for 73 educators, offering our children music, hands-on science, physical education, stronger math, reading, writing and technology instruction, librarians, and electives like STEM, film and robotics.

We are concerned for the health and sustainability of our communities. We are "stakeholders," in the original sense of the word, when it comes to radioactive waste policy. It is deeply disturbing to us that Secretary Chu suggested that the Yucca licensing process might continue - and also that acting DOE Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management Ines Triay recently traveled to a meeting in Georgia at which DOE contractors were urged by her office to pursue irradiated fuel storage and reprocessing -- long before the radioactive waste evaluation has even begun.
