The nature of Germany’s past and present requires nothing less than an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of German society and culture. Within its research and public affairs programs, the analysis of Germany’s intellectual and cultural traditions and debates has always been central to the Institute’s work. Some years ago, the Spanish author Antonio Iturbe was searching for someone who could tell him some details about the books on the children’s block in the Auschwitz– Birkenau concentration camp. He received my internet address, and we started exchanging emails. His were short, apol o getic questions and mine long, detailed answers. But then we met in Prague, and for two days I showed him where I grew up and where I played in a sandbox and went to school and the house that we—my parents and I— left forever when we were sent to the Terezín ghetto by the Nazi occupants.

  • BICICLETA III Reflexions Sobre El Internacionalismo 8

  • Cultural Life in the Theresienstadt Ghetto- Dr. Margalit Shlain [Posted on Jan 5Th, 2015] People Carry Their Culture with Them W
Cultural Life in the Theresienstadt Ghetto- Dr. Margalit Shlain [posted on Jan 5th, 2015] People carry their culture with them wherever they go. Therefore, when the last Jewish communities in Central Europe were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto (Terezin in Czech), they created a cultural blossoming in the midst of destruction, at their last stop before annihilation. The paradoxical consequence of this cultural flourishing, both in the collective memory of the Holocaust era and, to a certain extent even today, is that of an image of the Theresienstadt ghetto as having had reasonable living conditions, corresponding to the image that the German propaganda machine sought to present. The Theresienstadt ghetto was established in the north-western part of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia on November 24, 1941. It was allegedly to be a "Jewish town" for the Protectorate’s Jews, but was in fact a Concentration and Transit Camp, which functioned until its liberation on May 8, 1945. At its peak (September 1942) the ghetto held 58,491 prisoners. Over a period of three and a half years, approximately 158,000 Jews, from the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, Germany, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Slovakia, and Hungary, as well as evacuees from other concentration camps, were transferred to it. Of these, 88,129 were sent on to their death in the 'East', of whom only 4,134 survived. In Theresienstadt itself 35,409 died from "natural" causes like illness and hunger, and approximately 30,000 inmates were liberated in the ghetto. This ghetto had a special character, as the Germans had intended to turn it into a ghetto for elderly and privileged German Jews, according to Reinhard Heydrich’s announcement at the "Wannsee Conference" which took place on January 20th, 1942 in Berlin.

  • Destruction and Human Remains
Destruction and human remains HUMAN REMAINS AND VIOLENCE Destruction and human remains Destruction and Destruction and human remains investigates a crucial question frequently neglected in academic debate in the fields of mass violence and human remains genocide studies: what is done to the bodies of the victims after they are killed? In the context of mass violence, death does not constitute Disposal and concealment in the end of the executors’ work. Their victims’ remains are often treated genocide and mass violence and manipulated in very specific ways, amounting in some cases to true social engineering with often remarkable ingenuity. To address these seldom-documented phenomena, this volume includes chapters based Edited by ÉLISABETH ANSTETT on extensive primary and archival research to explore why, how and by whom these acts have been committed through recent history. and JEAN-MARC DREYFUS The book opens this line of enquiry by investigating the ideological, technical and practical motivations for the varying practices pursued by the perpetrator, examining a diverse range of historical events from throughout the twentieth century and across the globe. These nine original chapters explore this demolition of the body through the use of often systemic, bureaucratic and industrial processes, whether by disposal, concealment, exhibition or complete bodily annihilation, to display the intentions and socio-political frameworks of governments, perpetrators and bystanders. A NST Never before has a single publication brought together the extensive amount of work devoted to the human body on the one hand and to E mass violence on the other, and until now the question of the body in TTand the context of mass violence has remained a largely unexplored area.

  • Barbie Trial
Barbie Trial Trial of SS officer Klaus Barbie, who was known as "the butcher of Lyons." The trial, which aroused interest and controversy all over the world, was held in Lyons, France, from May to July 1987. Barbie joined the Nazi Party in 1932 and the SS in 1935. In 1942 he began working for the Gestapo. In November of that year he was sent to Lyons to serve as the city's Gestapo chief. During the 21 months in that post, Barbie was responsible for many horrific actions; he even carried out some of the atrocities himself (hence his nickname). One of the most notorious things he did was to torture to death the famed hero of the French Resistance, Jean Moulin. After the war Barbie worked for the United States government as a secret agent in Germany. He moved to La Paz, Bolivia in 1951, and became a Bolivian citizen in 1957 under the false name, Klaus Altmann. Despite the fact that Barbie was safely settled in South America, the French government tried him for war crimes twice during the 1950s. In both cases he was convicted and sentenced to death. In 1971 French Nazi hunter Beate Klarsfeld tracked Barbie to La Paz. Over the next few years the French government repeatedly requested that the Bolivian authorities extradite Barbie to France; they finally agreed to cooperate in 1983, and Barbie was returned to France. Barbie was charged with various crimes against humanity, including a raid on the Lyons headquarters of the Union of French Jews on February 9, 1943, in which 85 Jews were arrested and sent to Auschwitz the of 44 Jewish children whom Barbie's Gestapo men found to be hiding in the village of Izieu, more than 43 miles from Lyons; and ordering the last deportation from Lyons to Auschwitz on August 11, 1944.
