Zdanie tego rodzaju wydaje się podzie- lać wiele osób, także tych, które niejako zawodowo zajmują się obserwowaniem i analizowaniem rzeczywistości oraz podejmowaniem prób jej rozumienia, których społeczną misją jest między innymi oswajanie innych ze zmianami następu- jącymi w różnych sferach życia społecznego, w tym w komunikacji i kulturze. Do tej grupy należą, oczywiście, także naukowcy, zwłaszcza ci, którzy prowadzą badania na gruncie szeroko rozumianej humanistyki oraz nauk społecznych. A jednak, mimo że nie mogliśmy się spodziewać tego rodzaju społeczno-poli- tyczno-kulturowego trzęsienia ziemi, jakie przeżywamy w 2020 roku za sprawą pandemii koronawirusa i choroby COVID-19, wspólną cechą tekstów, które zamieszczamy w niniejszym tomie, są przemiany różnych sfer otaczającej nas rzeczywistości pod wpływem rozmaitych tendencji rozwojowych. Przy czym – jak tego właśnie doświadczamy – wszystkie te przemiany, traktowane en bloc, pokazują, że rozwój, rozumiany jako efekt dynamiki zmiany, nie musi oznaczać postępu, czyli zmiany jakościowo lepszej, lepszej dla człowieka. Zmiana jakościowa jest zmianą formy istnienia, zmianą form jako takich, zmianą w sferze komunikowania, form działania, tworzenia itp. Niemniej jednak nowe, nawet bardziej sprawne lub bardziej efektywne, z pewnej perspektywy jest postrzegane jako groźne, ponieważ budzi lęk właśnie dlatego, że jest nieznane i może okazać się zagrożeniem. Tego rodzaju perspektywę wprowadza niety- powy w formie (jak na wypowiedź naukowca, zwłaszcza w czasach „punktozy” i ewaluacji „naukometrycznych”) esej naukowy Andrzeja Pitrusa. Tekst ma charakter polemiczny, może być odebrany jako kontrowersyjny, ale otwieramy za jego sprawą cykl niestandardowych, niemieszczących się w narzuconych, sztywnych ramach artykułu naukowego tekstów, które będą glosami w dyskusji na różne tematy. Autor z tego powodu sam nazywa go, zgodnie z wyznacznikami gatunku, esejem, gdyż – spełniając wymóg rzetelności naukowej (oparcie tekstu na kwerendzie – przypisy, bibliografia, hipotezy, część analityczna), ma jednak charakter wypowiedzi nie tylko podmiotowej, ale wręcz osobistej, a przy tym pozbawiony jest precyzyjnej konkluzji, potwierdzenia lub zanegowania stawia- nych hipotez. Jednak znak zapytania, którym esej się kończy, jest zaproszeniem do dyskusji na ten i – jak sądzę – także na inne tematy. 6 Mariola Marczak Zaproszenie to jest również intencją Redakcji. Chcielibyśmy, oprócz dominu- jących na naszych łamach opracowań stricte naukowych, stworzyć miejsce dla publikacji tekstów nieoczywistych w takim czasopiśmie jak „Media – Kultura – Komunikacja Społeczna”, ale ożywczych z perspektywy ruchu myśli, potrzeby głębokiego namysłu nad światem, w którym żyjemy, który w obecnej swojej niepewnej postaci wręcz prowokuje do przemyśleń prowadzonych z różnych punk- tów widzenia. Chcemy, aby piszący mogli odrobinę odsłonić siebie, swój osobisty osąd. Pragniemy tekstem profesora Pitrusa zainicjować rodzaj publikacyjnej wszechnicy, nawiązującej do tradycji UNIVERSITAS – swobodnej dyskusji między ludźmi nauki, którzy zechcą spojrzeć na sprawy otaczającego świata przez pryzmat własnego światopoglądu, wrażliwości, doświadczeń i poddać je refleksji. Zachowujemy w pełni naukowy charakter pisma, pragniemy jedynie udostępnić mały fragment jego łamów na swobodniejszą wymianę zdań, aby poszerzyć możliwości prowadzenia humanistycznego dyskursu, który – mam nadzieję – w pewnym sensie pomoże nam oswoić się z traumą, jakiej doświad- czamy za sprawą pandemii. Większość artykułów zamieszczonych w niniejszym tomie została napisana na początku tego roku, czyli wtedy, kiedy mieliśmy do czynienia z pierwszym lockdownem, ale – jak to bywa z tekstami naukowymi – proces ich powstawania przypadał zapewne także na okres wcześniejszy. Autorzy odwołują się – w spo- sób oczywisty – do publikacji, które powstały w „czasach przedpandemicznych”. W tym kontekście niezwykle ciekawy jest fakt, że w tych spontanicznie zgła- szanych do naszego czasopisma opracowaniach powtarza się temat głębokich przemian postępujących w sposób kroczący w życiu społecznym i kulturze, spowodowanych na ogół nowymi formami komunikacji, w tym dominacją ko- munikacji cyfrowej. Pierwszą część prezentowanego zeszytu nazwaliśmy zatem „Wobec wyzwań współczesnego świata – wizje, dyskursy, dynamika zmiany”. Charakter syntetycznej diagnozy ma otwierający numer artykuł Anny Ślósarz „Krąg” Dave’a Eggersa w dobie korporacji, medialnych kampanii wyborczych i pandemii. Autorka porównuje w nim cywilizację high-tech wykreowaną w powieści D. Eggersa Krąg do praktyk komunikacyjnych rozpowszechnionych w okresie pandemii COVID-19. Zauważa, że „Eggers przewiduje korporacyjny model rozwoju

Temsunungsang The English and Foreign Languages University Shillong Campus A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics SCHOOL OF LANGUAGE SCIENCES >. )53lt- I'\.' -- THE ENGLISH AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD 500605, INDIA JULY 2011 To my mother ABSTRACT In this thesis, we make, for the first time, an acoustic investigation of supposedly unique phonemic contrasts: a four-way stop phonation contrast (voiceless, voiceless aspirated, voiced and devoiced), a three-way fricative contrast (voiceless, voiced and devoiced) and a two-way sonorant contrast (voiced and voiceless) in Dzongkha, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Western Bhutan. Paying special attention to the 'Devoiced' (as recorded in the literature) obstruent and the 'Voiceless' sonorants, we examine the durational and spectral characteristics, including the vowel quality (following the initial consonant types), in comparison with four other languages, viz .. Hindi. Korean (for obstruents), Mizo and Tenyidie (for sonorants). While the 'devoiced' phonation type in Dzongkha is not attested in any language in the region, we show that the devoiced type is very different from the 'breathy' phonation type, found in Hindi. However, when compared to the three-way voiceless stop phonation types (Tense, Lax and Aspirated) in Korean, we find striking similarities in the way the two stops CDevoiced' and 'Lax') employ their acoustic correlates. We extend our analysis of stops to fricatives, and analyse the three fricatives in Dzongkha as: Tense, Lax and Voiced.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ScholarSpace at University of Hawai'i at Manoa 3rd ICLDC March 2nd, 2013 The impact of dialectal variation on documentation and conservation work: The view from Amdo Tibetan Zoe Tribur University of Oregon Summary For researchers interested in exploring questions of typology and linguistic universals, documentation of dialects provides priceless data, but such problems as what features constitute a dialect and who speaks it complicate the task of identifying and collecting data, especially for dialects that are low prestige or are only spoken by diglossic speakers. The field researcher must be alert to the possible existence of such forms and be aware of the issues associated with them. For the conservationist, the linguist’s instinct is to argue that dialects should be preserved as part of the community’s heritage, as well as having value in their own right, but individuals struggling to reverse language shift may feel that the reduction of diversity is a necessary step toward ensuring the survival of the language for future generations. However, the selection of a “standard” form can be problematic, sometimes resulting in conflict within the community or, more seriously, causing some speakers to be excluded from conservation efforts altogether. It behooves the field linguist to be aware of community attitudes toward diversity and to try to understand how diversity impacts language use within the community. Two varieties of Amdo Tibetan: Gro.Tshang and mGo.Log Spoken by an estimated 1.5 million people, Amdo Tibetan does not fit the profile of a typical endangered language.

Traditions, culture, and different languages were created and evolved in villages consisting of valley-dwelling inhabitants who quite often had very little contact with other nearby human set- tlements – the Himalayan passes were difficult to traverse (Muppidi 2012: 173). This theocratic country was divided into many independent and combative fiefdoms. However, in the 17th century, fleeing Tibetan Lama Zhabdrung Rinpoche Ngawang Namgyal was able to unify the majority of the country under the single rule (Aris 2005: 27). The office of Druk Desi (the title of secular, administrative ruler) and the Driglam Namzha (official behaviour and dress code) were established (Aris 1994: 17). Integration of the country occurred under rule of the first Bhutanese King, Ugyen Wangchuck (1907–1926), who introduced the Buddhist monarchy system that has prevailed to this day (Dorji 2008: 13). Even though Bhutan is a unified country – especially after the controversial expulsion of Nepali minority in the early 1990s, unwilling to embrace Bhutanese dress and custom. It is still home to many different ethnic groups (Gulati 2003: 36). The Royal Government of Bhutan has adapted an official language policy that was aimed to establish a single national language and preserve the Kingdom’s linguistic diversity.

    i ! 4 (,:-,: South Asia and the Middle East George van Driem -<a -z South Asia is an ethnolinguistically inordinately complex portion of the planet. The topography of the greater Himalayan region has impeded migrations of peoples throughout prehistory. The result is an intricate patchwork of language phyla and language isolates enmeshed in a geographically complex pattern. Languages of the Altaic and Daic language families have encroached upon the periphery of the Hima­ layan region, whereas the Indian subcontinent is the home of Indo-European, Dravi­ dian, Tibeto-Burman and Austroasiatic languages. Moreover, South Asia is the home to the language isolates Andamanese, Nahali, Kusunda and Vedda. Burushaski, which was traditionally viewed as a language isolate, but has been shown to be a member of the Karasuk language family, is distantly related to the Yenisseian languages. The Indo-European family tree of Stammbaum has traditionally been emblematic of comparative linguistics. The family tree model is still a valid model of linguistic phy­ logeny, particularly with all of the qualifications and nuances which were already explicitly formulated from the earliest days of historical linguistics and later enhanced in the writings of Junggrammatiker, though these nuances have often been ignored by laymen as well as some linguists. Yet even the Indo-European family tree has come to look less like a tree today and increasingly resembles a bed of flowers sprouting forth from a common primordial substrate, despite the recognition of higher-order branches such as Indo-Iranian, Balto-Slavic and Italo-Celtic. Below family trees will be depicted of the three major language families which are either wholly or largely confined to the Indian subcontinent and the greater Himalayan region, namely Tibeto-Burman, Aus­ troasiatic and Dravidian.

Various meanings of “Tibetic” The term “Tibetic” has been used in the recent past by some authors in different ways to refer to various intermediate levels of classification within Tibeto-Burman (e.g. Matisoff 2003, Beckwith 2006, Lewis 2009, Blench 2011, de Haan 2011, DeLancey 2012, van Driem 2012, Noonan 2012, Chirkova in press inter alia ). 2 Depending on the author, “Tibetic” may be used to refer to a high level of sub-grouping more or less equivalent to “Bodic” or “Himalayish” or to a lower level of sub-grouping such as “Bodish” or an even lower level as an alternative form for “Tibetan languages/dialects”. “Bodic”, also referred to as “Tibeto-Himalayan” (Michailovsky 2011), groups together many Eastern Himalayan languages (such as the Kiranti languages), Western Himalayan languages (such as Kannauri, Almora), the so-called “Tibetan dialects” and “Bodish languages” (such as Tamang, Gurung, Bumthang, Tshangla etc.). “Bodic” is a “heterogenous and impressionistic” group (van Driem 2011: 31). “Bodish”, sometimes referred to as Tibeto-Kannauri, although less problematic is also not well-defined. It groups together the “Tibetan dialects”, Tamangic languages and some other languages such as Tshangla, Bumthang, Kurtoep, Bake 3 etc. The historical comparative methodology has so far not provided common innovations which would delimit clearly the Bodish subgroup. We can only agree with Matisoff’s (1989, 1990) note of caution to megalo- reconstructionists, or van Driem who states that it is safer “to discover the structure of the [Tibeto-Burman] family tree by working up from the firmer group of lower-level subgroups to the higher levels of superordinate subgroups” (2011: 37).

    The Tonal and Intonational Phonology of Lhasa Tibetan Keh Sheng Lim A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate in Philosophy degree in Linguistics Department of Linguistics Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies University of Ottawa © Keh Sheng Lim, Ottawa, Canada, 2018 Abstract This dissertation provides a comprehensive description of the tonal and intona- tional phonology of Lhasa Tibetan (LT) in the Autosegmental-Metrical framework. It is based on recorded data elicited from members of the Tibetan-Canadian com- munity in Ottawa and Toronto. The first two chapters of the dissertation contain background information about LT, a summary of previous research on LT tones and intonation, and an overview of the theoretical framework and conceptual tools used in the rest of the dissertation. The third chapter deals with word tonology. I establish that the prosodic struc- ture of LT brings evidence for four main constituents at or below the word level: a) the mora encodes vowel length contrasts, b) the syllable is the tone-bearing unit (TBU), c) the prosodic word, which is maximally binary, delimits the appli- cation of most tonal processes, and d) the prosodic word group, which matches grammatical words, is the domain of downstep. This prosodic structure provides evidence against the universality of the Prosodic Hierarchy (Selkirk, 2002; Nespor and Vogel, 2007) in that it has no phonological phrase, but has two word-level constituents. I then argue that LT has three lexical tones (H, LH, and L) – L being limited to some suffixes – and propose that these lexical tones are subject totone rules applying within the prosodic word and the prosodic word group.
