Was aber kann man sich von kartografischen Ordnungen erwarten?` Welchen Stellenwert haben Kartografie- und Mappingsysteme für die künstlerische wie auch wissenschaftliche Methodik? In einem Tandem-Gespräch zwischen Wissenschaft und Kunst bzw. Theorie und Praxis sollen Fragen wie diese und die Anwendbarkeit des Mapping in PhD-Projekten diskutiert werden.“ Kolloqium Ein Kolloquium (… Colloquium) ist ein Gespräch oder eine Unterredung und wird heute meist in seiner Bedeutung als wissenschaftliches Gespräch verstanden. Im akademischen Bereich bedeutet es heute meist einen fachlichen Gedankenaustausch ohne feste Form, im Gegensatz etwa zu einem Seminar. Zu (1) Im Ordnungsmuster ‚Karte – Diagramm – Plan‘ kann also die Map(Karte) an die Stelle jeder Grundtype treten: Map = Karte, Map = Diagramm, Map = Plan und der Chart-Begriff aus dem Bereich der Geschäftsgrafiken ist auch noch mit abgedeckt: Map = Chart. Zu (1.1) In Bezug auf ‚plan‘ wird das OED sehr konkret: Über das ‚layout of a building‘ kann Auch der gesamte Bereich der technischen Zeichnung mit abgedeckt werden. Es ist also nicht nur der Plan (im Sinne einer geogr. Karte) als Stadtplan angesprochen! Map = technische Zeichnung Zu (1.2) In der Diagrammatik werden Listen und Datentabellen (als Matrix) als Sonderfall Benannt. Gleiches geschieht hier für die Karte. Map = Tabelle. Maps werden definitiv als ‚diagrammatic representation‘ angesprochen! Aber auch hier wieder: Map = Diagramm und Map = Sequence Map = Datenkollektion. Ähnlich wie bei Dieter Mersch (Graphematik) wird das Mapping insgesamt mit der Mathematik in Verbindung gebracht. Mapping = Mathematik.     1/26 Lev Manovich www.softwarestudies.com What is Visualization? Published in Visual Studies journal (Taylor & Francis, 2011). Abstract The article proposes that the practice of information visualisation (infovis) from its beginnings in the second part of the eighteenth century until today relied on two key principles. The first principle is reduction. Infovis uses graphical primitives such as points, strait lines, curves and simple geometric shapes to stand in for objects and relations between them. The second principle is the use of spatial variables (position, size, shape and, more recently, movement) to represent key differences in the data and reveal patterns and relations. Following this analysis, I discuss a more recent visualisation method which we can call ‘media visualisation’: creating new visual representations from the actual visual media objects (images, video) or their parts. The article analyses the well‐known examples of artistic visualisations that use this method: Listening Post (Ben Rubin and Mark Hansen, 2001), Cinema Redux (Brendan Dawes, 2004), and Preservation of Selected Traces (Ben Fry, 2009). I further suggest that media visualization method is particularly relevant for humanities, media studies and cultural institutions. Using the actual visual artefacts in visualisation as opposed to representing them by graphical primitives helps the researcher to understand meaning and/or cause behind the patterns she may observe, as well as discover additional patterns. To illustrate this idea, I present the examples of projects created in our lab at UCSD (Software Studies Initiative, softwarestudies.com). Founded in 2007, the lab develops on techniques and software to allow interactive exploration of large sets of visual cultural data using media visualisation approach and supervisualisation systems such as 287 megapixel HIPerSpace.

    ContextsContexts for Conservation 20132013 National Conference --- AdelaideAdelaide 2323---- 25 October Data visualisation: a new tool for conservation Peter Shaw, National Archives of Australia Abstract In the National Archives of Australia we are flooded with information in databases, spread sheets and images. We use this data to identify, understand and retrieve collection items. Analysis of collections through physical surveys and database interrogations is used to establish conservation priorities and undertake identified projects. This methodical approach can be time consuming and labour intensive. Web based word searches can be a little like viewing the world through a letterbox. By harnessing data sets we can use visualisation techniques to look at everything and reveal associations that can be used for preservation and access purposes. Visualisation can be a useful tool for access, preservation planning and data entry quality. Five years ago, the Archives commissioned a project called the Visible Archive, in which visualisation techniques were applied to large Archives datasets to develop ways of exploring and understanding the contextual relationships of records. The Archives is currently supporting a project to explore content based image retrieval that will gather like images in a data set. For conservators and archivists this will have the benefit of identifying duplicate images; associating images that may be split across collections and allowing data entry comparison for consistency, accuracy and completeness. I aim to demonstrate that with available data sets conservators can use visualisation processes to identify conservation priorities in image collections and target records at risk and known to be deteriorating.
