Hermanowicz) ABSTRACT In the third book of Macrobius’ Saturnalia, the evocatio and devotio of Carthage stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding text and to other quotations in the dialogue. Why would the author incorporate such a lengthy text into his dialogue, and how does the evocatio relate to Saturnalia 3 as a whole? In the past, scholars have treated the Saturnalia as a sourcebook, but more recent scholarship has centered on the didactic nature of the dialogue and its role in Vergilian criticism. How does the evocatio contribute to Macrobius’ educational dialogue? To answer these questions, I will examine how the evocatio fits within Praetexataus’ speech, how the evocatio relates to other quotations within Sat. 3, and how Macrobius’ treatment of the evocatio differs from his contemporary, Servius. Set during the eponymous festival, Sat. 3 reports conversation from the second evening of the feast, exploring topics such as Roman religion, lavish banqueting practices during the Republic, the morality of dancing, and concludes with a catalogue of dessert foods. As the evening’s second speaker, Vettius Agorius Praetextatus lectures on Vergil’s knowledge of Roman religious practices, using the curse text to close his speech.1 First, the curse calls the protective god or goddess out of the city of Carthage ( evocatio ), luring him or her with the promise of temples and worship. Next, the curse asks the spirits of the underworld to help destroy Carthage, its army, and surrounding territory, while keeping the Roman forces safe ( devotio ). 2 When taken together, the two parts of the curse comprise the longest quotation in Sat. 3, situated in the very heart of the dialogue. Why would Macrobius use such a lengthy text like the evocatio in the Saturnalia ? Finding an answer to this question by reading modern scholarship on the Saturnalia or the ritual of evocatio is a difficult if not impossible task. Some scholars consider the Saturnalia an encyclopedia rather than a dialogue because it includes diverse topics and a multitude of textual fragments in its corpus. The Saturnalia has preserved unique fragments within in its text, which encourages literary mining. As a result, removing fragments from the dialogue’s context has become an accepted practice, considering the Saturnalia as an historical sourcebook rather than a work of literature in its own 1 For clarity in this paper, I refer to Praetextatus’ words as his own. However, I am fully aware that the author Macrobius is the mind behind the creation of Praetextatus’ fictionalized personage in the Saturnalia. 2 For brevity’s sake, hereafter I will refer to the combined curse text, evocatio and devotio as the evocatio . 2 right. Unfortunately, this practice also has demoted passages like the evocatio to historical curiosities, without considering their relationship to the larger work. The sheer quantity of fragments included in the Saturnalia creates another problem: so much of the text is either quotation or allusion that some scholars see the dialogue as a literary pastiche, lacking originality. This attitude encourages piecemeal readings of the dialogue and robs and denies the Saturnalia’s contributions to Vergilian criticism. These problems are not unique to the Saturnalia. In Beowulf and the Critics , J.R.R. Tolkien argues that Beowulf has also been summarized, taken out of context, and otherwise ill- used by historians. 3 His essay argues for studying Beowulf as the poem that it is, and chastises the greats who have overlooked the literary value of Beowulf (particularly G.K. Chesterton who called the poem “small beer”). For scholars who have analyzed the poem after only a cursory reading, Tolkien warns “The intensive student has some reward denied to the traveling giant of mighty range.” 4 Tolkien’s attitude towards Beowulf echoes Macrobius’ virtue of diligentia—that one achieves the best analysis by reading text closely, weighing each word—rather than sweeping over an entire work of literature. Robert Kaster notes that for Macrobius, “ diligentia involves a willingness to extend oneself, to behave with energetic scrupulousness in performing one’s duty.” 5 This confluence of ideas is my inspiration: as an “intensive student” like Tolkien, I hope to value the Saturnalia as first and foremost a work of literature and then study the evocatio with Macrobian diligentia . However, it is difficult to maintain a narrow focus with an author like Macrobius who pulls ideas together from many different sources. In times of doubt, I have always returned to the text of the Saturnalia for a closer reading, and of course to the Vergilian 3 J.R.R. Tolkien, Beowolf and the Critics , Ed. Michael D.C. And yet to me we seem to have made hardly any progress in this attempt. Aust 1 and Wissowa 2 have collected the relevant passages from ancient authors and other documents which I think it unnecessary to copy out. Neither the disease of angitia nor 'worries to be dispelled,' as urged on us by the ancients, are of any help towards an interpretation. Mommsen 3 thought Angerona was a goddess in charge of the New Year. He sought to derive the name from angerendum, &1to 't'ou &voccpepea6ocL 't'Ov ~A.Lov. The explanation was accepted by Wissowa but rightly rejected by others (Walde-Hofmann s.v. 'ganz unwahrscheinlich'). Recently Eva Fiesel 4 and Altheim 6 have sought an Etruscan origin for the name and connected it with the gentilitial name anx.arie, ancarie, anx.aru, ancaru. The suggestion is rejected by Vetter,8 and I cannot agree with it either. To the arguments offered by Vetter I can add the following. First, the derivatives in Latin of Etruscan names ending in -u usually end in -onius not -onus. 7 Secondly, the name Angerona seems to fit very well into a large series of such names belonging to truly Roman (or Sabine) goddesses.     Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language.     The Evolution of the Roman Calendar Dwayne Meisner, University of Regina Abstract The Roman calendar was first developed as a lunar | 290 calendar, so it was difficult for the Romans to reconcile this with the natural solar year. In 45 BC, Julius Caesar reformed the calendar, creating a solar year of 365 days with leap years every four years. This article explains the process by which the Roman calendar evolved and argues that the reason February has 28 days is that Caesar did not want to interfere with religious festivals that occurred in February. Beginning as a lunar calendar, the Romans developed a lunisolar system that tried to reconcile lunar months with the solar year, with the unfortunate result that the calendar was often inaccurate by up to four months. Caesar fixed this by changing the lengths of most months, but made no change to February because of the tradition of intercalation, which the article explains, and because of festivals that were celebrated in February that were connected to the Roman New Year, which had originally been on March 1.     CHAPTER ONE CONSTITUENT CONCEPTS 1. Space Since they were conceptualized as human beings, Roman gods had a place in this world, in which they moved freely. This conclusion is unavoidable, if we consider that all Roman gods could be invoked, and that invocation implied spatial proximity to the invocator.1 Apart from this, at least the major gods were conceptualized as connected to speci c locations, normally marked as such by an altar, a temple, or in some other way. These locations I will call ‘spatial foci’. They are mostly represented by archaeological remains. However, by relying on archaeology, we unduly overemphasize the spatiality of major of cial divine concepts, which were more likely than private cults to be per- manently conceptualized by speci cally marked space. The sacred landscape of Rome was complex, time-bound and noto- riously anachronistic. It was complex because its parameters were not absolute and necessarily recognizable as such. Rather, it was intrinsi- cally relative and existent only within the full semiotic system of the topography of the city. Furthermore, it was time-bound, because the city itself developed rapidly, especially during the peak of urbanization from ca. 200 B.C.–200 A.D. It was notoriously anachronistic because the semiotic system underlying it was highly conservative and did not keep pace with the actual urban development (for instance, the pomerium was still remembered, when it had long become obsolete in the imperial period in terms of urban development; and the festival of the Septimontium was still celebrated separately by the communities that had long since merged into the city of Rome).

    Histos () – THE EPIC VANTAGE-POINT: ROMAN HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ALLUSION RECONSIDERED Abstract: This paper makes the case that Roman epic and Roman historiographical allusive practices are worth examining in light of each other, given the close relationship between the two genres and their common goal of offering their audiences access to the past. Ennius’ Annales will here serve as epic’s representative, despite its fragmentary state: the fact that the epic shares its subject-matter with and pre-dates most of the Roman historiographical tra- dition as we know it suggests that the poem may have had a significant role in setting the terms on which the two genres interacted at Rome; and what the first surviving generation of its readers, as principally represented by Cicero, have to say about the epic rather con- firms that suggestion (§I). Points of contact between the genres on which the paper focuses are: extended repetition of passages recognisable from previous authors (§II); allusion that is contested among the speakers of a given text (§III); citation practices (§IV); and the recur- rence of recognisable material stemming from the Annales in the historiographical tradition’s latter-day, when all sense of that material’s original context has been lost, along with its ability to generate new meaning (§V). n this paper,1 I consider how reading Ennius’ Annales can shed light on the extent to which allusion, as it operates in historiography, is differentiable I from allusion in other genres. It is uncertain how magic has been understood and practised in differ- ent cultural contexts and what the difference is (if any) between magical and religious praxis. Similarly, no satisfactory and all-encompassing definition of ‘magic’ exists. The authors, analyzing the evocation of Yahweh carried out by Titus dur- ing the siege of Jerusalem, present this rite as an example of the activity of Roman ‘redemptive hegemony’, and one of the elements involved in the transformation of Roman religion which tried to answer the new calls connected with the transformation of the Roman state. They remain aware however that in this case we are discussing a ritual activity directed towards the Roman citizens themselves. Cult practices associated with war served above all to assure victory, predictions of which were searched for in signs sent by the gods. The gods authorized or legitimised all stages of conflict from declarations of war to the re-establishment of peace. Outside the realms of myth, they did not take active part in military activities, although they were the beneficiaries of victories and the victims of defeats. Spoils of war and sacrifices made in gratitude enriched the temples, but on the conquered enemy lands places dedicated to the gods were usually destroyed, even against traditionally ascribed rules (Rutledge 2007; Tarpin 2013).
