Russell Dissertation Director: Barbara Foley To novelists, short story writers, poets, and playwrights of the early twentieth century, works of fiction provided spaces to explore the ways that black women workers shaped and were shaped by the theory and practice of working-class resistance. This dissertation is an analysis of domestic labor and sexual labor that imagines the possibilities of black women’s resistance through the lens of literature. It examines four key figures, who considered these possibilities by centering domestic and sexual laborers in their work: sociologist, theorist, and longtime Communist activist, Esther Cooper Jackson, proletarian novelist William Attaway, famed author Richard Wright, and playwright, essayist, and short story writer, Alice Childress. For contemporary scholars, fiction (and the process of writing fiction) provides us with an intellectual framework that emerges from its historical moment, with which we can further understand and historicize black women’s sexual and domestic labor, both at the places where they overlap and those at which they diverge. More importantly, in analyzing domestic work as wage work, sexuality, sexual violence, and sexual desire, Wright, Attaway, and Childress generate new questions and new understandings of black womanhood, labor, and ii activism. While the writers’ evolving theorizations are certainly flawed and by no means comprehensive, an examination of their methodological processes (both those that work and those that don’t work) demonstrate a cultural, political, and historical significance of black women workers that cannot be ignored. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I share this accomplishment first with my incredible committee: Barbara Foley, Beryl Satter, and Belinda Edmondson. Gordon All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT “Oh, Awful Power”: Energy and Modernity in African American Literature Walter A. Gordon “‘Oh, Awful Power’: Energy and Modernity in African American Literature” analyzes the social and cultural meaning of energy through an examination of African American literature from the first half of the twentieth century—the era of both King Coal and Jim Crow. Situating African Americans as both makers and subjects of the history of modern energy, I argue that black writers from this period understood energy as a material substrate which moves continually across boundaries of body, space, machine, and state. Reconsidering the surface of metaphor which has masked the significant material presence of energy in African American literature— the ubiquity of the racialized descriptor of “coal-black” skin, to take one example—I show how black writers have theorized energy as a simultaneously material, social, and cultural web, at once a medium of control and a conduit for emancipation. African American literature emphasizes how intensely energy impacts not only those who come into contact with its material instantiation as fuel—convict miners, building superintendents—but also those at something of a physical remove, through the more ambient experiences of heat, landscape, and light. By attending to a variety of experiences of energy and the nuances of their literary depiction, “‘Oh, Awful Power’” shows how twentieth-century African American literature not only anticipates some of the later insights of the field now referred to as the Energy Humanities but also illustrates some ways of rethinking the limits of that discourse on interactions between energy, labor, and modernity, especially as they relate to problems of race.

Barrett ii ABSTRACT On June 24, 1916, the New Republic published an editorial that began: "The average Pole or Italian arriving at Ellis Island does not realize that he is the deadly foe of the native Negro . It is a silent conflict on a gigantic scale." While this statement illustrates only a limited view of the cross-cultural encounters that it describes, it is based on historical facts that anchor my dissertation which explores the relationship between cultural constructions of space and literary visions of ethnicity and Americanness in fiction. My parallel readings of African American and immigrant novels show that the disciplinary boundaries which are often drawn between African American literature and white ethnic literatures can be imaginatively negotiated by examining the construction of space and place in black and white-ethnic writing. I argue that both black and immigrant literature of the time casts the relationship between ethnic/racial subjects and spaces as a challenge to the contemporary definition of American identity. My dissertation offers an approach to ethnic literatures that seeks parallels and dialogues among ethnic groups and their literary representations, while simultaneously acknowledging the historically nonnegotiable differences.

Federal writers—many of whom would become famous, including Ralph Ellison, Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Margaret Walker, and Dorothy West—collected reams of oral histories and folklore, and produced hundreds of guides to cities and states across the country.

With few exceptions, colleges and critics have not realized that there is at hand a great body of American liter- ature expressing in words the tragic experiences of the Negro race. For Negro literature is American literature, woven of the same warp and woof. A survey of Negro novelists and their novels was the principal purpose of this study.
