Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Although Lyle Saxon was New Orleans' most popular writer during the second quarter of the twentieth century, he is remembered less as a writer than as an editor and friend to writers, as well as an architectural preservationist, a French Quarter booster, and beloved public personality. Saxon was born on September 4, 1891. His early life was strongly shaped by family and by literary influences. It is significant that all three of the child's names were family names. His father Hugh, of course, was a Saxon, his father's mother was a Lyle, and Saxon's mother Katherine was a Chambers. All three were journalists. His grandmother, Elizabeth Lyle Saxon, was also a poet, author, and prominent early suffragette. In addition, his maternal grandfather, Michael Chambers, owned the first bookstore in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, long an institution in the town. Saxon's parents' marriage disintegrated shortly after his birth, and apparently he never afterwards had any contact with his father. He grew up in his grandfather's house with his mother and two spinster aunts. Young Lyle aspired to attend an Eastern college, but his genteel mother could not afford to send him to an Ivy-league college. Instead, he attended Louisiana State University in his hometown, but left college one course short of a degree. By 1919 Saxon was in New Orleans writing for the city's leading newspaper, The Times-Picayune. After a stint as a general reporter he began to write book reviews and fiction for the newspaper, as well as features about the city, its history and unique culture. -

MADIHUR REHMAN DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2013 Abstract The first chapter of the thesis, "The Path to Doom: America from Idea to Reality;'" takes the journey of America from its conception as an idea to its reality. The country that came into existence as a colony of Great Britain and became a refuge of the exploited and the persecuted on one hand and of the outlaws on other hand, soon transformed into a giant machine of exploitation, persecution and lawlessness, it is surprising to see how the noble ideas of equality, liberty and democracy and pursuit of happiness degenerated into callous profiteering. Individuals insensitive to the needs and happiness of others and arrogance based on a sense of racial superiority even before they take root in the virgin soil of the Newfoundland. The effects cf this degenerate ideology are felt not only by the Non-White races within America and the less privileged countries of the third world, but even by the Whites within America. The concepts of equality, freedom, democracy and pursuit of happiness were manufactured and have been exploited by the American ruling class.The first one to experience the crawling effects of the Great American Dream were original inhabitants of America, the Red Indians and later Blacks who were uprooted from their home and hearth and taken to America as slaves. -

Alan Wald‘s enthusiasm for the study of the American left made this project possible, and I have been guided at all turns by his knowledge of this area and his unlimited support for scholars trying, in their writing and in their professional lives, to negotiate scholarship with political commitment. Since my first semester in the Ph.D. program at Michigan, Marjorie Levinson has shaped my thinking about critical theory, Marxism, literature, and the basic protocols of literary criticism while providing me with the conceptual resources to develop my own academic identity. To Patricia Yaeger I owe above all the lesson that one can (and should) be conceptually rigorous without being opaque, and that the construction of one‘s sentences can complement the content of those sentences in productive ways. I see her own characteristic synthesis of stylistic and conceptual fluidity as a benchmark of criticism and theory and as inspiring example of conceptual creativity. -

Dorothy West: The Last Writer of the Harlem Renaissance Dorothy West's first long book was published when she was more than forty years old. Her second book was published when she was in her late eighties. Yet African-American poet Langston Hughes called her "The Kid." This means a child. Dorothy West had been one of the youngest members of the group of writers and artists of the Harlem Renaissance. This was a creative period for African-Americans during the 1920s and 1930s. During and after World War I, thousands of southern blacks moved to northern cities in the United States. They were seeking jobs and better lives. Many settled in an area of New York City known as Harlem. Many were musicians, writers, artists and performers. Harlem became the largest Dorothy West African-American community in the United States. The mass movement from South to North led African-Americans to examine their lives: Who were they? What were their rights as Americans? The artistic expression of this collective examination became known as the Harlem Renaissance. Renaissance means rebirth. The Harlem Renaissance represented a rebirth of black people as an effective part of American life. Dorothy West helped influence the direction and form of African-American writing during this time. Dorothy West was born in 1907 in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. Both her parents were born in the southern United States, and moved north. Her father was a former slave. He became the first African-American to own a food-selling company in Boston. The family became part of the black upper middle class social group of Boston. -

AFRICAN-AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGY AND THE WORKS OF GAYL JONES ABDUL QUADIR Research Scholar Department of English Jai Prakash University, Chapra (BH) INDIA Jones’ work has frequently been challenged on account of her questionable subjects just as news inclusion of her own life, her work keeps on awing peruses with its unpredictable style and profundity of feeling. She attracts a significant number of the subjects her accounts from her African-American legacy just as her very own life and battles. Maybe generally significant all through the mental advancements in the characters are their voices which yell from the pages of her work their story, their melody, and their fact. Her peruses can't hold back to hear what will come next from this calm lady who works so anyone can hear. Keywords: Gayl Jones, Slavery, Brutality, Racism, Classic Blues, Diaspora, Black INTRODUCTION A profoundly respected and inventive voice of African-American women author, Gayl Jones is a Black American Poet, Novelist, Play Wright, Short Story Writer, Professor and scholarly critic and was destined to Franklin and Lucille Jones on November 23, 1949 in Lexington, Kentucky, Jones early associations with the south are reflected unequivocally in her own life just as in her composition, which frequently rejuvenates Kentucky culture and characters for the peruses. As a striking novelistic voice apparently at progress with her tranquil, baffling persona, Gayl Jones shocked the abstract world during the 1970s with various books of African Americans battling to adapt to the tradition of Race, Violence, Slavery and Female Subjectivity. Both the structure and topic of her work are drawn from the dark oral custom. -

The King’s Jesters Even the Monarch of Merriment needs jesters in his court. Rex’s jesters dress in Mardi Gras colors—purple, green, and gold. 4. The Boeuf Gras This is one of the oldest symbols of Mardi Gras, symbolizing the great feast on the day before Lent begins. 5. Title Float: “Beaux Arts and Letters” While Rex Processions of past years have presented the history and culture of far-flung civilizations, this year’s theme explores the joys and beauties of Rex’s own empire and domain. New Orleans has a long and rich artistic history and has produced a wealth of artists and writers of national and international renown. Sculptors and painters, writers and poets have called New Orleans home, and have found inspiration for their work in her history, culture, and landscapes. Mardi Gras, the celebration unique to this city, has influenced the work of many of our artists and writers. 6. John James Audubon (1785-1851) Audubon, the pre-eminent American painter of birds and wildlife, was born in Haiti and came to America at age eighteen, living in Pennsylvania and Kentucky before traveling south with little more than his gun and his painting equipment. -
