With annotations on approximately 150 books, it was comprehensive, including almost every literary .work br a black writer or with. a black main .character that was in print at the time. In addition, a depressingly- large number of out-of-print.books were inchided, for such classics . asGwendolyn Brooks' The Bean Eaters and Maud Martha, Wit- Ibiza Derby's Beetiecreek, Ann Petry's The Street, and. Richard Wright's Eight Men were all unay.. eliable in bdokstores. Ten years ago- Negro Literature' fog High School Students was complete had up-todate. The wealth of black literature published since that time has made a new edition necessary. A new book was desperately needed to direct teachers to the important new works now available from black writers. And in addition to new books, a new perspective was needed. As black literature has become'more- popular, new insights have emerged from both critics and teachers. We have now' recognized more honestly the impaetthat cultural - '-_. preconceptions have on a person's ability to evaluate and to analyze literature objectively. Many Contemporary black writers claim that'their works are so far froth white traditions that white critics have no right to evaluate them, and this rejeationis often extended to white -teachers. When I first heard challenges to a white teacher's ability to interpret black literature, I was upset and, fangry, bqt I have since recognized the validity of the statement . that white people do not interpret literature the same way black people 'do. It is now obvious to methat my, reaction to the works of Imamu Amiri Baraka is -very likely not the same as a black person'areaction, and is probably

Garcia). The music of John Coltrane’s last group—his 1965-67 quintet—has been misrepresented, ignored and reviled by critics, scholars and fans, primarily because it is a music built on a fundamental and very audible disunity that renders a new kind of structural unity. Many of those who study Coltrane’s music have thus far attempted to approach all elements in his last works comparatively, using harmonic and melodic models as is customary regarding more conventional jazz structures. This approach is incomplete and misleading, given the music’s conceptual underpinnings. The present study is meant to provide an analytical model with which listeners and scholars might come to terms with this music’s more radical elements. I use Coltrane’s own observations concerning his final music, Jonathan Kramer’s temporal perception theory, and Evan Parker’s perspectives on atomism and laminarity in mid 1960s British improvised music to analyze and contextualize the symbiotically related temporal disunity and resultant structural unity that typify Coltrane’s 1965-67 works.

I argue that Nkrumah’s engagement with African Americans in the pursuit of an African Personality transformed diaspora relations with Africa. It also seeks to explore Black women in this transnational history. Women are not perceived to be as mobile as men in transnationalism thereby underscoring their inputs in the construction of certain historical events. But through examining the lived experiences of Shirley Graham Du Bois and to an extent Maya Angelou and Pauli Murray in Ghana, the African American woman’s role in the building of Nkrumah’s Ghana will be explored in this thesis.

Gore As recounted in this collection’s introduction, when listing the key figures in Ghana’s expatriate community during the 1960s, writer Les- lie Lacy referenced Vicki Garvin, a longtime labor activist and black radi- cal, as one of the people to see “if you want to start a revolution.”1 While several recent studies on Black Power politics have acknowledged Vicki Garvin’s activism and transnational travels, she is often mentioned only as a representative figure, a “radical trade unionist,” or a “survivor of Mc- Carthyism,” with little attention given to the specific details of her life and political contributions.2 Yet Vicki Garvin played a leading role in the six decades of struggle that marked the shift from Negro civil rights to black liberation. Politicized in the upheavals of Depression-era Harlem and ac- tive in the U.S. left well into the 1980s, Garvin provides an important win- dow for understanding the significant channels of influence between the Old Left and the New Left and between black radicalism and the black freedom struggle.

  • Biography Etheridge Knight Was a Man of Mystery. According To
    Biography Etheridge Knight was a man of mystery. According to Sanford Pinsker, “Knight is the kind of poet who gives poetry a good name.”1 Fran Quinn, a close friend of Knight’s said that Knight is “the kind of person that a lot of rumors are going to gather around.”2 One thing that is certain is the he managed to produce a body of work that is to this day considered some of the finest of American poetry. Etheridge Knight was born on April 19, 1931, in Corinth, Mississippi. He grew up in Paducah, Kentucky. Knight only attended school until he had finished the eight grade. It was during this period that his problems with drug and alcohol use began, although this was also when he was introduced to the art of toasting. Toasts are traditional oral forms of narratives, often focusing on “drugs, sex, illegal activities, and violence.” After he dropped out, he ended up joining the army in 1947. Knight saw active duty in Korea and served until he was discharged in 1951 after suffering a shrapnel wound.3 In 1960 he was arrested for what was officially called armed robbery.4 Knight had distracted a clerk at a convenience store and taken $12 out of the register. When the police picked him up a few blocks away, he was found to have a knife in his pocket. The whole incident had been caught on the store’s security camera, and despite never having drawn the weapon, Knight was convicted of armed robbery and made into an example by the judge; who sentenced him to one year in prison for each dollar taken.
