When terrorists struck on Sept. 11, 2001, Ameri- cans praised and mourned fallen firefighters, police officers and other emergency workers who ran into danger while others fled from it. Public safety and medical emergency workers, by definition, save lives by stepping into danger. Sev- eral firefighters from Lynn and communities across the state were honored Tuesday by their colleagues and state officials for upholding the highest stan- dards defining their profession. By Mike Alongi FOR THE ITEM If you were to look at all the injuries the St. Mary’s girls basketball team suffered last sea- son, it would be easy to believe that 2015 just wasn’t their year. After all, lose one of your top senior leaders in Gianna Moschella and two of your top rebounders in Temi Falayi and Aman- da Idusuyi to injury, and it’s going to be tough sledding. But when you’ve won 120 games and two state titles as a program over the last six years, win- ning becomes a mindset. “Obviously it was tough to have all those in- juries last year,” said St. Mary’s coach Jeff Ne- whall. “But if there’s any positive to it, it’s that it happened early in the year and it allowed us to get other players in there to see what they could do.
