While not nearly so accomplished as the great trombone soloists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries such as Arthur Pryor, Simone Mantia, and Leo Zimmerman, Rodeheaver’s use of the trombone in Christian evangelistic meetings—par- ticularly during the years (1910–30) when he was song leader for William Ashley “Billy” Sunday—had an impact on American religious and secular culture that continues today. Rodeheaver’s tree of influence includes many other trombone-playing evangelists and song leaders, including Clifford Barrows, song leader for the evangelistic crusades1 of William Franklin “Billy” Graham. While Homer Rodeheaver was one of the most successful publishers of Christian songbooks and hymnals of the modern era—he owned copyrights to many of the most popular gospel2 songs of the first half of the twentieth century—and was the owner of and a recording artist with one of the first record companies devoted primarily to Christian music, the focus of this article is on Rodeheaver as trombonist and trombone icon, his use of the trombone as a tool in leading large congregations in singing, the particular instruments he used, his trombone recordings, and his legacy and influence in inspiring and encouraging others to utilize the trombone as a tool for large-scale Christian evangelism.

    February 21, 2018 My dear Friends: I’m writing this a couple of hours after the news broke that Billy Graham died at the age of 99. Like many, many of you, I greatly admired him and his ministry. But two other thoughts occur to me this morning as I reflect on his passing into glory. One is this: as you know, I graduated from Bob Jones University. What you may not know is that Billy attended for a semester before going to Florida Bible Institute and then to Wheaton College—he met Cliff Barrows at BJU. Also, after World War II, but before the decisive 1950 Los Angeles crusade that made Graham a national name, Dr. Bob Jones, Sr., the president of his self-titled college, offered Graham the presidency of the school. In the end, Graham would be president of the Northwestern Schools in Minneapolis, Minnesota (which is why the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association headquarters were in that city for so many years). By the time I got to BJU, Graham was practically “public enemy number one.” In fact, the historian George Marsden once quipped that the way to determine if someone was a fundamentalist was to ask them what they thought about Billy Graham. There were a range of reasons for this—some theological, some methodological, some quite personal—but I especially remember being able to purchase for three dollars a packet of information sold in the bookstore that warned of Graham’s theological “liberalism.” Looking back on all of that now, I can see the ways we all too often attack our should-be friends when they are busy doing the very thing we ought to be and are doing—winning others to Jesus.

She stood as still and undramatic as if she were waiting to be served at the meat counter. The next was an eleven-year-old boy who kept his head low to hide his tears: a thin girl appeared behind him and put her arm comfortingly on his shoulder. These three were joined by a broad- shouldered young man whose machine-knitted jersey celebrated a leaping swordfish. then by a pretty young Negro woman in her best clothes with a sleeping baby in her arms. Suddenly there were too many to count, standing on the trampled grass in the blaze of lights. Some of them wept quietly, some of them stared at the ground and some looked upward. Above them all stood a tall, blond young man in a double-breasted tan gabardine suit. His handsome, strong-jawed face was drawn and his blue eyes glittered; for a few seconds he gnawed nervously on a thumbnail, and bright sweat covered his high forehead. I awoke Wednesday morning to read a social-media post from my younger brother informing me that Billy Graham had passed away. Even though I knew Dr. Graham was approaching 100, it was still surreal to see the scores of news’ feeds declaring that he indeed had passed sometime during the night at his home in Montreat, NC. Since Wednesday morning, I have read and watched several tributes about Dr. Graham’s life and ministry. I remember fondly watching him preach on my parent’s television in our living room when I was just a child. As a child, I was captivated by his voice and his passionate preaching of the pure Gospel of sin, God’s love, the cross of Christ, and our need to turn to Christ for forgiveness of our sins. In fact, when I entered The Southern Baptist Seminary in the fall of 1997, I chose to enter their Billy Graham School of Evangelism, Missions and Church Growth because of my love for Dr. Graham and Travis Fleming evangelism. I would suggest that besides Billy Graham, no one since the Apostle Paul has preached the Gospel with such power, boldness and love. Gerald Harris, Editor Published: January 28, 2010 ALPHARETTA — The chapel at the North American Mission Board was filled to capacity Jan. 14 with NAMB staff, Southern Baptist evangelists, and families and friends of the evangelists. The occasion for the gathering was the much-anticipated dedication of the “Evangelists Hall of Faith.” NAMB interim president Richard Harris greeted those present by saying “According to the Bible the evangelist is a gift to the church and churches are not complete unless they use God-called evangelists.” Harris continued, “Billy Graham has been my hero for many years and his ministry greatly impacted my life. We are here today to celebrate and honor these men and women who serve the Lord in vocational evangelism.” Major League Baseball has its Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. That is where the greatest athletes in baseball history are immortalized. Similar Halls of Fame dot the landscape of our nation. When Georgia Baptist evangelist Brian Fossett was president of the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists in 2007 the officers approved a motion initiated by Fossett to establish something similar to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Hine The United Methodist Hymnal, No. 77 As Carlton Young was preparing The United Methodist Hymnal, a United Methodist Reporter poll revealed that “How Great Thou Art” headed the list of hymns that should be retained in the then-forthcoming 1989 hymnal. As the poll was published, John A. Lovelace, Reporter editor emeritus, wrote, “What no previous survey had found, though, is that ‘How Great Thou Art’ may also be United Methodism's least-liked hymn” (The United Methodist Reporter, August 23, 1985). Earlier, when the hymn was reluctantly included in the 1966 Methodist Hymnal (as most-requested hymn), Dr. Young notes that many complained that “the church’s official hymnal would bring respectability to the theme song of the Billy Graham Crusades . .. Others brought equally uninformed and unfair criticism on the Methodist Publishing House for presumably dictating editorial policy and cheapening the church’s official hymnal” (Young, 1993, 409). Many who fervently sing this hymn throughout the world each Sunday in myriad translations have no idea of the polarity of feeling that exists around it. Perhaps both sides would benefit from some historical perspective. The origins of this hymn may be found with Swedish pastor Carl Boberg around 1886. Boberg (1859-1940) was a leading evangelist of his day and the editor of an influential Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden periodical Sanningsvittnet (“Witness of the Truth”). Boberg served in the Swe•dish par•lia•ment and published sev­er­al vol­umes of po­e­try, including hymns.

Randall Conservative Constructionist: The Early Influence of Billy Graham in Britain Mr Randall is a former student in the University ofAberdeen who is now a Baptist minister and tutor in Church History in Spurgeon's College. His article didn't quite make it to publication for the fortieth anniversary of Billy Graham's visit to Scotland in 1955 (which brings back memories to some of us), but it is still timely for us to have this evaluation of the evangelist's influence. At an early stage in his All Scotland Crusade of 1955, Billy Graham announced: 'I am neither a fundamentalist nor a modernist, but a constructionist'.l Graham's statement was, at the time, a way of avoiding theological controversy, but it also provides an insight into an important aspect of his contribution to the twentieth-century church. As a constructionist Billy Graham played a critical part in the shaping of British evangelicalism in the period after the Second World War. Confidence among British evangelicals was low. The inter-war years had seen the evangelical constituency weakened by division and suffering from consequent decline in influence. Max Warren, secretary of the Church Missionary Society, wrote in 1944 that 'all too commonly today, an Evangelical in the Church of England is a person labouring under a sense of frustration and discouragement so deep as to engender ... an inferiority complex,.2 As well as doctrinal tensions between liberal evangelicals, conserva- 1 Quoted in F.
