During 2016, more than 1.8 million people across the globe told us they made a life-changing decision for Christ as a result of God working through BGEA’s ministries. Wade in 1973, which legalized abortion; to 2015’s Supreme Court ruling making same- sex marriage legal—it seems God and His standards are being systematically torn from the fabric of our nation. Franklin Graham spent most of 2016 traveling to the capitals of all 50 states to hold prayer rallies for the nation. During the Decision America Tour, he led Christians in prayer and confession of sin, challenged them to take a stand for God’s truth at home, in public, and at the ballot box—and strongly urged believers to run for public office at every level. Most importantly, Franklin shared the Gospel DECISION AMERICA TOUR with the thousands who attended, and many at each stop responded to Jesus Christ in repentance and faith. In 2011, Will held multi-day outreaches in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, and Kenya. The three‐ day event, Reality, Alice Springs, was held from 20‐22 May at Blatherskite Park in Alice Springs, NT. Out of a population of 28,605, nearly 6,000 people attended the weekend event. ‘Some of you have a broken life, and God doesn't use band aids. God wants to completely change you,’ Will Graham de‐ clared. ‘Salvation is a person and His name is “Jesus”. Jesus can change everything in life. He can change your life tonight!’ At Graham’s invitation, a total of 549 people made a commitment to Christ. An additional 297 responded for prayer and spiritual support. Reality featured five different events over the course of the weekend, including evangelistic out‐ reaches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, a KidzFest program for children on Saturday morning, and a combined church service for the city on Sunday morning. Reflecting on Reality, Graham referred to another evangelist who traveled the same territory more than 45 years prior. Dr Ralph Bell, a longtime ministry partner of Billy Graham’s, spent two months preaching in and around Alice Springs in 1969, and – Graham says – paved the way for the success of this event. ‘In Alice Springs God harvested fruit that we did not sow. Particularly among the indigenous people, Dr Bell and other missionaries planted the seeds of faith in Jesus Christ decades ago, and we are able to see the result this weekend.’ This was Will Graham’s fourth time preaching in Australia, dating back to 2010.

While not nearly so accomplished as the great trombone soloists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries such as Arthur Pryor, Simone Mantia, and Leo Zimmerman, Rodeheaver’s use of the trombone in Christian evangelistic meetings—par- ticularly during the years (1910–30) when he was song leader for William Ashley “Billy” Sunday—had an impact on American religious and secular culture that continues today. Rodeheaver’s tree of influence includes many other trombone-playing evangelists and song leaders, including Clifford Barrows, song leader for the evangelistic crusades1 of William Franklin “Billy” Graham. While Homer Rodeheaver was one of the most successful publishers of Christian songbooks and hymnals of the modern era—he owned copyrights to many of the most popular gospel2 songs of the first half of the twentieth century—and was the owner of and a recording artist with one of the first record companies devoted primarily to Christian music, the focus of this article is on Rodeheaver as trombonist and trombone icon, his use of the trombone as a tool in leading large congregations in singing, the particular instruments he used, his trombone recordings, and his legacy and influence in inspiring and encouraging others to utilize the trombone as a tool for large-scale Christian evangelism.

    February 21, 2018 My dear Friends: I’m writing this a couple of hours after the news broke that Billy Graham died at the age of 99. Like many, many of you, I greatly admired him and his ministry. But two other thoughts occur to me this morning as I reflect on his passing into glory. One is this: as you know, I graduated from Bob Jones University. What you may not know is that Billy attended for a semester before going to Florida Bible Institute and then to Wheaton College—he met Cliff Barrows at BJU. Also, after World War II, but before the decisive 1950 Los Angeles crusade that made Graham a national name, Dr. Bob Jones, Sr., the president of his self-titled college, offered Graham the presidency of the school. In the end, Graham would be president of the Northwestern Schools in Minneapolis, Minnesota (which is why the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association headquarters were in that city for so many years). By the time I got to BJU, Graham was practically “public enemy number one.” In fact, the historian George Marsden once quipped that the way to determine if someone was a fundamentalist was to ask them what they thought about Billy Graham. There were a range of reasons for this—some theological, some methodological, some quite personal—but I especially remember being able to purchase for three dollars a packet of information sold in the bookstore that warned of Graham’s theological “liberalism.” Looking back on all of that now, I can see the ways we all too often attack our should-be friends when they are busy doing the very thing we ought to be and are doing—winning others to Jesus.

She stood as still and undramatic as if she were waiting to be served at the meat counter. The next was an eleven-year-old boy who kept his head low to hide his tears: a thin girl appeared behind him and put her arm comfortingly on his shoulder. These three were joined by a broad- shouldered young man whose machine-knitted jersey celebrated a leaping swordfish. then by a pretty young Negro woman in her best clothes with a sleeping baby in her arms. Suddenly there were too many to count, standing on the trampled grass in the blaze of lights. Some of them wept quietly, some of them stared at the ground and some looked upward. Above them all stood a tall, blond young man in a double-breasted tan gabardine suit.
