BURMEISTER, EDITOR ON THE COVER THREE Newly Renovated Organic Laboratories! # 3 8 - P AGE I BLU E H E N C H E MIST ON THE COVER One of the three newly-renovated Organic Chemistry teaching laboratories (QDH 302) is shown. Work on the labs (QDH 112, 318, 320) started on May, 2013 and was completed in February of this year. The refurbishment of the labs was a crucial step in the ongoing revision of the Organic Chemistry laboratory curricula. The additional fume hoods allow each student to conduct experiments individually while minimizing their exposure to chemical reagents. The transparent glass construction helps teaching assistants observe students while they work. The hoods are equipped with inert-gas lines, which can allow the students to work with air-sensitive compounds and learn advanced laboratory techniques. The hoods are also equipped with vacuum lines, which obviate the need for water aspirators and dramatically reduce the labs' water usage. The lab design also allows for instrumentation modules to be swapped in and out according to the needs of the experiment. Carts are designed to house instruments such as gas chromatographs and infrared spectrometers as well as any necessary computer equipment. These carts can then be wheeled into docking areas that have been fitted with the necessary inert gas and electrical lines. The design expands the range of possible instrumentation the students can use while occupying a small footprint of lab space. The labs also feature large flat screen monitors, wireless internet, and computer connectivitiy that will enable the use of multimedia demonstrations and tablet computing. -
The Scottish Roots of English Studies in Canada
The Dream of Empire: The Scottish Roots of English Studies in Canada SARAH PHILLIPS CASTEEL T XHE LAST FIFTEEN years have seen the publication of a num• ber of histories of English Studies in Canada which depart from earlier discussions by focusing on disciplinary formation rather than on the history of a specific institution (Tayler; Johnson; Murray; Hubert). This new orientation has brought to light some of the social undercurrents that propelled the formation of the discipline of English in the emerging society of nine• teenth-century colonial Canada. Yet surprisingly, these disci• plinary histories largely neglect the significant links between the rise of English Studies and the history of British imperialism that have recently been identified by scholars such as Gauri Viswanathan and Robert Crawford. This limitation is best illustrated by the treatment of the Scot• tish legacy in the histories of the discipline. Most scholars of Canadian English Studies readily acknowledge the dispropor• tionate impact of Scottish immigrants on the formation of Canadian universities, and especially on the growth of rhetoric and of modern languages departments. Some have in fact made the Scottish contribution the focus of their studies (Masters; Tayler). Such scholars call attention to the deep-rooted divi• sions between English Anglican and Scottish Presbyterian edu• cators that patterned the Canadian educational system and determined the place of English Studies in that system, as the English emphasis on a classical curriculum came up against the more utilitarian Scottish approach. Yet these accounts fail to consider in any depth how a long and fraught history of Anglo- Scottish relations informed the Scottish immigrants' debate with English educators in Canada. -

Otto Abstract Virtually everyone working in cancer research is familiar with the “Warburg effect”, i.e., anaerobic glycolysis in the presence of oxygen in tumor cells. However, few people nowadays are aware of what lead Otto Warburg to the discovery of this observation and how his other scientific contributions are seminal to our present knowledge of metabolic and energetic processes in cells. Since science is a human endeavor, and a scientist is imbedded in a network of social and academic contacts, it is worth taking a glimpse into the biography of Otto Warburg to illustrate some of these influences and the historical landmarks in his life. His creative and innovative thinking and his experimental virtuosity set the framework for his scientific achievements, which were pioneering not only for cancer research. Here, I shall allude to the prestigious family background in imperial Germany; his relationships to Einstein, Meyerhof, Krebs, and other Nobel and notable scientists; his innovative technical developments and their applications in the advancement of biomedical sciences, including the manometer, tissue slicing, and cell cultivation. The latter were experimental prerequisites for the first metabolic measurements with tumor cells in the 1920s. In the 1930s–1940s, he improved spectrophotometry for chemical analysis and developed the optical tests for measuring activities of glycolytic enzymes. Warburg’s reputation brought him invitations to the USA and contacts with the Rockefeller Foundation; he received the Nobel Prize in 1931. -

Maud Menten, a Physician and Biochemist
Maud Menten Canadian medical researcher Maud Menten (1879-1960) has been called the "grandmother of biochemistry," a "radical feminist 1920s flapper," and a "petite dynamo." Not only was she an author of Michaelis-Menten equation for enzyme kinetics (like the plot in indigo in my portrait), she invented the azo-dye coupling for alkaline phosphatase, the first example of enzyme histochemistry, still used in histochemistry imaging of tissues today (which inspired the histology background of the portrait), and she also performed the first electrophoretic separation of blood haemoglobin in 1944! Born in Port Lambton, Ontario, she studied at the University of Toronto, earning her bachelor's in 1904, and then graduated from medical school (M.B., bachelor's of medicine) in 1907. She published her first paper with Archibald Macallum, the Professor of Physiology at U of T (who went on to set up the National Research Council of Canada), on the distribution of chloride ions in nerve cells in 1906. She worked a year at the Rockefeller Institute in New York, where along with Simon Flexner, first director of the Institute, she co-authored a book on radium bromide and cancer, the first publication produced by the Institute - barely 10 years after Marie Curie had discovered radium. She completed the first of two fellowships at Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University), then she earned a doctorate in medical research in 1911 at U of T. She was one of the first Canadian women to earn such an advanced medical degree. She then moved to Berlin (travelling by boat, unfazed by the recent sinking of the Titanic) to work with Leonor Michaelis. -

With a particular focus on the creation and subsequent activities of the Defence Research Board (DRB), Canada’s first peacetime military science organization, the history covered here crosses political, social, and environmental themes pertinent to a detailed analysis of defence-related government activity in the Canadian North.
