Efraim Racker
Efraim Racker June 28, 1913 — September 9, 1991 Efraim Racker came to Cornell in 1966 as Albert Einstein Professor (one of six awarded by the State of New York) and Chairman of the Section of Biochemistry in the newly created Division of Biological Sciences. He was a key figure in the expansion of the Section at that time, bringing with him eight younger colleagues as faculty members. His brilliant research, and concern for developing a strong graduate research program for the Section were instrumental in setting the pattern for the breadth and strength Biochemistry (now Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology) enjoys today. An example of Ef’s efforts to strengthen the biochemistry graduate program at Cornell led him to hold an evening seminar program in which each student spoke on his own research. For the first ten years, or so, Ef only occasionally allowed other faculty members to attend and he constantly interrupted the students with questions about the presentation or research. The seminars are still held, now with all faculty invited but the primary advisor not allowed to speak, and are known as the Racker Seminars. Ef Racker was born in Neu Sandez, Poland, and grew up in Vienna. He had natural artistic talent, and almost went to Art School. Instead, he decided on Medical School for his advanced training, graduating in 1938. Biochemistry, brain function and art had become major interests, and remained so for the rest of his life. He escaped to England as the Nazis moved in, and began work on energy metabolism of the brain at the Cardiff Mental Hospital. -

The end of the Second World War left the Country exhausted but a spirit of optimism was in the air. Thanks to the efforts of the Honorary Officers, the Society successfully survived the War and the mood of optimism within the Society was fully justified and has lasted well after the hopes of a brave new world have long faded in other areas of human activity. Biochemistry rapidly developed into a thriving discipline and this has been maintained throughout the post-War period, although in recent years the pace has slackened somewhat mainly owing to the parsimony of recent Government policy on support of Science. This blossoming of Biochemistry in the post-War years has been one of the great scientific successes of all time and in the DEVELOPMENT 1944- 1986 37 U.K.the simultaneous expansion of the Biochemical Society has been equally impressive. -

Introduction of the Programme The Master of Science in Biochemistry is a full- time programme spread over 2 years and is divided into 4 semesters. The programme of study shall consist of 11 core papers which are compulsory, 3 elective papers, 3 practicals and one project. Each of these carry 100 marks. It has been developed to provide students the opportunity to be trained in recent development in Biochemistry. The course is designed to impart the students a vigorous training in Biochemistry both in theory and experiments. Our approach is a comprehensive one. It is believed that teaching students both how to ask and address questions. This Programme has been designed to expose students knowledge in Biochemistry to contemporary national and international problems. At the end of the course, students are expected to have state- of- the- art quantitative skills valued both in academia and in the corporate world. During the course time, one gets as in-depth knowledge about core subjects like Advances in Biochemistry, Clinical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Microbiology. 2. Eligibility for Admission B.Sc., degree from UGC recognized Universities with Biochemistry/ Botany, Zoology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Microbiology, Agriculture, Nutrition & Dietetics as major subjects or an examination accepted as equivalent there to by the syndicate are eligible for seeking admission to M.Sc Biochemistry. Candidates belonging to general category should have secured at least 55% of marks, OBC candidates must have secured 50% marks and SC/ST /Candidates with disability must have passed in the qualifying examination for admission , as prescribed by Government of Tamil Nadu/Madurai Kamaraj University. -
