Opening Speech KALMARECO -TECH'03 Bioremediation and Leachate Treatment KALMAR, SWEDEN, November 25-27, 2003 OPENING SPEECH Lisbeth Lennartsson Mayor ofMu nicipalityof Borgholm, Sweden Dear friends of a good and sustainable Environment in the Baltic Sea Area! I hope and believe that you will have a fantastic conference here in Kalmar. I am also really looking forward to see you as guests visiting the Municipality of Borgholm this Thursday. The environmental questions are of vital importance forour future. And the fact that we together, the countries around the Baltic Sea, can discuss these questions is very important. We have no right to make our problems the burden of our future generations - our children and our grandchildren. In our Municipality, Borgholm, the environmental questions have a top priority. The most important economic sectors in our municipality are tourism, agriculture, fisheryand small scale food processing. All sectors are depending on each other and all sectors are depending on a sustainable development. It was only yesterday that we, politicians and civil servants together with property owners (alt. local stakeholders) were discussing possibilities to restore wetlands in order to reduce nitrogen leakage. Several areas within our Municipality are a part of the EU programme Life. The Life-programme also contains activities concerning offshore meadows and wetlands. Anoother project we are involved in is to make Oland self sufficiency of sustainable energy. With the help from wind power, a very well integrated system of wood chips distant heating, a little bit of digester gas and some sun energy - then we have begun ourjo urney in ourMuni cipality. What is really encouraging is that the children and teachers in ourschool system are so devoted to this process. Four year old children are sorting waste at the nurseryschool and when they go home they tell their parents to do the same at home. Several of the nursery schools have been awarded with the Swedish symbol - a green flag, a mark fordevoted environmental work. The green flag symbol shows that you are working on a long-term schedule and with a clear aim forthe future. There is also a big and active engagement in the EU-project Green Circle School in our Municipality. We are proud to say that we are one of three Swedish Municipalities participating in this project. The teachers fromour schools who recently visited Latvia on a conference and there met teachers from our Twin City Zelenogradsk in Kaliningrad, they were very happy and pleased. We are really looking forward to the Green Circle School Conferencethat will be arranged in Borgholm next spring. 5 KALMAR ECO-TECH'03 Bioremediation and Leachate Treatment KALMAR, SWEDEN, November 25-27, 2003 I am convinced that in order to get progress in this work it is extremely important to make the children both involved and engaged in the process. Many times the children have a lot more of common sense that we adults have. And when the children starts to influence their parents, people like myself, bornand raised in the generation when it was considered that the earthis a never-ending resource - then we can talk about progress. I want to wish you best of luck with your conference and in your continued work for a sustainable development and a better environment for allof us around the Baltic Sea area. I also hope you will be given time for reflection and possibilities to look for new solutions, to be inspired of each others and - perhaps most important of it all - to be given time to exchange knowledge and experiences in a free and open-minded atmosphere during this conference. I am looking forward to seeing you in Borgholm this Thursday. 6 .

  • The Viruan (Middle Ordovician) of Öland
The Viruan (Middle Ordovician) of Öland By Valdar Jaanusson ABSTRACT.-The stratigraphy and lithology of the Viruan (Middle Ordovician) Iimestones of the bed-rock of Öland are described based on three bares and on field work in the outcrop area. A combined litho- and bio-stratigraphic classification (termed topo-stratigraphic) is introduced for the described sequence. The names of the Estonian stages (Aserian, Lasnamägian, Uhakuan, and Kukrusean) are used as chrono-stratigraphic references instead of the previous Swedish names of the units of stage category (Platyurus, Schroeteri, Crassicauda, and Ludibundus, re spectivcly). New topo-stratigraphic divisions are Segerstad Limestone (of Aserian age), Skärlöv, Seby, and Folkeslunda Limestones (of Lasnamägian age), Furudal, Källa, and Persnäs Lime stones (of Uhakuan age), and Dalby Limestone (of Kukrusean age in the bed-rock of Öland). The Aserian Lasnamägian topo-stratigraphic divisions have the same lithological characteris and tics throughout Öland. The Uhakuan beds are developed as calcilutites (Furudal Limestone) on southern Öland continuing as a tongue (Källa Limestone) on northern Öland. The middle and upper part of the Uhakuan beds of northern Öland consist of calcarenites (Persnäs Limestone) lithologically indistiguishable from the Kukrusean Dalby Limestone which forms the bed-rock only on northern Öland. Within the Segerstad Limestone two zones are distinguished (z. of Angelinoceras latum and z. of Illaenus planifrons).H ouvr ' s zones of Lituites discors, L. lituus, and L. perfectus are of Lasna mägian age, and their stratigraphic position and fauna! characteristics are described. • Island Sustainable Energy Action Plan Island of Öland
ISLAND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY ACTION PLAN ISLAND OF ÖLAND Fields of wild orchids. Photo: Municipality of Borgholm Date 2011-12-21 ISLAND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY ACTION PLAN Island of Öland Executive summary Political decisions concerning energy and climate issues in the municipalities of Öland, Borgholm and Mörbylånga, has long been characterized by project approach. While this has worked well there has been no long-term strategy in the field. There was first in connection with the greenhouse effect's massive impact that showed the need of a common climate strategy. All municipalities of Öland joined the Pact of Islands in 2010, which is a commitment much like Covenant of Mayors but specialized on islands. This membership includes various projects with various commitments. The current project is called the Isle Pact, which aims to develop local energy action plans to meet or exceed the EU's sustainability 20/20/20 2020. The project is led by the Outer Hebrides in Scotland and is co-funded by the European Commission and is expected to eventually result in reduced global climate change. EU sustainability means that by 2020 the EU should: • Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 % compared to 1990 levels • Energy mix will consist of 20 % renewable energy • Total energy consumption will decrease by 20% by 2020 The membership of Pact of Islands shows that to Öland and its municipalities climate issues are of utmost importance and priority. One of the commitments of membership is to produce an Island Sustainable Energy Action Plan, which now has been done. This document is the first version and will be supplemented and revised until the autumn of 2012 when the Isle Pact project will be completed.
