Öland reaching beyond fossil fuels 3 examples of how

Elvira Laneborg sustainability strategist Mörbylånga municipality Öland, Clean Energy for EU islands Forum ,14th of May 2019 Öland on the map

26 000 inhabitants (250 000) Tourist destination (including the Royal family) Farming an important part, many cows (!) World heritage The agricultural landscape of southern Öland Island of wind and sun The region of has a goal to become a fossil-fuel-free region by 2030

That means:

NO OIL No diesel/petrol No coal No natural gas

Neither in the transport, industry or housing sector Öland is a netto producer of energy but fossil fuels are still used Ex 1: Windpower There used to be a windmill at every farm. 352 remain today. Half of Öland energy is from wind

Kårehamn, east of Öland • Private investment (Eon) • 16 windmills a 3 MW (= 48 MW) • Yearly production 180 GWh • 6000 ton CO2 reduction/mill&year • 1,2 billion SEK ( 1 Euro=11 SEK ) • Only subsidy el-certificate 20 öre/KWh • Shallow waters, close to coastline and grid, no tidal water • 5 people employed, 3 live on Öland. • Fund for local environmental projects admintratated by Borgholm municipality Ex 2: Climate off-setting & change of car fleet Transport is the major challenge to cut C02

Municipal car fleet Mörbylånga: 1/5 Evs 1/5 Biogas 2/5 HVO 100/ecopar bio Still about 40 cars on petrol/diesel NO new fossil fuel cars allowed. >50 bikes and cargobikes Climate off-setting system since 2014

The system has generated 100 000 Euro investments in local climate projects. Cheap ways to sustainablility Ex 3: Biogas puzzle and story

1. Procurement for biogas public buses 100% REW, 60 % biogas, 2% cheaper than previos period. 2. Biogas municipal vehicles 3. Private bus company establishes filling station (2,2 million Euro investment) 4. 2nd filling station being planned 5. (to come) Filling station gets biogas from island production

A bit of advice to sum it up

• Public sector must be frontrunners • Politians must be involved and engaged • Useful to analys transportation habits initially • If ev:s, mind green energy • Biogas gives added (local) value • Communicate the work, celebrate milestones and use the media • Work hard - don´t stop until it is all there!

Thank You for Your attention!
