Kenworthy has been closely associated throughout his life with the Religious Society of Friends in the United States and abroad. Born into a Quaker family with roots going back to colonial times, he was educated at Westtown School and Earlham College-both Quaker institutions. He taught at Friends Select and Friends Central Schools in Philadelphia and has served on the boards of Oakwood School, Friends Seminary, and the Brook­ lyn Friends School. During World War II he was in Quaker Civilian Public Service Camps and units. In 1940-1941 he was the Director of the Quaker Inter­ national Center in Berlin and after the war a member of the secretariat of UNESCO. For most of his life he was a professor of social studies education at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. He has written widely for teachers, children, and Quakers. The Quaker Concern for An Authentic Religion ......... 73 Preface Despite the fact that the Religious Society of Friends (better known as Quakers) is a very small group, it has made significant contributions to the United States and the world in the more than 300 years of its existence. Some aspects of that remarkable record have ap­ peared in books, pamphlets, and articles. But, so far as this writer is aware, only one person has prepared a montage of those gifts for the public to ponder. That is Elizabeth Gray (Vining) who wrote a small volume in 1939 entitled Contributions of the Quakers, a book which was later reprinted as a Pen­ die Hill pamphlet. However, that was nearly 50 years ago and much has happened since that time. Also, that book was intended primarily for high school students in United States history courses and as such included much historical background and concentrated on contribu­ tions in the U.S.A. An invitation in 1985 from the historical society of Southeast Chester County, Pennsylvania, to speak on Some Contributions of the Quakers provided me with the incentive to bring together in one place material that I had collected over many years and in 8 Some Contributions of Quakers various books, pamphlets, and articles. Hence this small volume. Several considerations have gone into the prepara­ tion of this book. One was that it should be brief, as there is so much to read these days that one can be inundated by printed materials. Second, I wanted to concentrate on the major fields in which Friends have made their greatest contributions; hence the in­ clusion of the word "some" in the title. Third, I wanted to comment especially on Quaker contribu­ tions in the United States, but to include some references to similar contributions in England and in a few other parts of the world. Fourth, I wanted it to be a relatively popular account; therefore foot­ notes and other marks of the historical scholar are omitted. Inasmuch as this is a story of contributions, the accent is on achievements. But here and there I have referred to some of the shortcomings of Quakers. Friends should be proud of their rich heritage but humbled by their lack of far-reaching solutions to some complex and baffling problems. It is my hope that this short account will prove in­ teresting and helpful to a wide range of readers. Many may be Quakers who need to claim or reclaim their past in order to extend their contributions into the present and future. Others may be students of history who need to know about the gifts Quakers have made to the history of the Untied States and that of a few other countries, notably England. Still others may be students who are trying to understand the roots and fruits of American democracy, as Quakers have often cultivated those roots and been ... to the World 9 responsible for many of its fruits. And some may be seekers who are trying to find some answers to the riddle called life, as they may well find some clues in the Quaker Way and want to pursue its faith and practices in more detail elsewhere. To use a characteristically Quaker phrase, I hope that no matter who the readers are, this book will ''speak to their condition.'' In the writing of this volume I have drawn on some of my previous publications, especially Quakerism: A Study Guide on the Religious Society of Friends and the two volumes on Living in the Light: Some Quaker Pioneers of the 20th Century. I want to acknowledge with gratitude the helpful comments of Robert Berquist, Edwin Bronner, Helen Parker, and Elizabeth Vining on the original draft of this volume, even though I take full responsibili­ ty for what was finally included in this book. Leonard S. Kenworthy Kendal at Longwood Kennett Square, Pennsylvania 1986 1. Introduction The Religious Society of Friends (popularly known as Quakers) has always been a small group. Today it has approximately 210,000 members in the world, with 115,000 of them in the United States. Yet, despite its size, it has had a powerful impact throughout the 330 years of its history and has made valuable contributions to the world. Perhaps it is an example of the paradox that small is sometimes large. Founded in England in the middle of the 17th century, its membership and influence until recent times has been primarily in Great Britain and in the United States. But, largely because of the missionary movement of the 20th century, it has grown in several other parts of the globe. Thus the largest concentra­ tion of Quakers today is, in East Africa where there are over 40,000 members, plus many more attenders at their worship services. In the United States the largest concentration of Friends for a long time was in Pennsylvania and in New Jersey. Then, with the western migration, In­ diana became and remains the state with the most Quakers. However, the largest single yearly meeting (an organizational setup in a given geographical area), is in North Carolina, followed closely by the 12 Some Contributions of Quakers yearly meeting for eastern Pennsylvania and parts of New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. Despite differences in theology and in types of worship, Quakers everywhere are likely to be leaders in a wide variety of causes-peace and international relations, education, democracy and civil rights, con­ cern for minorities (or for majorities in some places), the rights of women, prison reform, and other movements. Every human group has some words that have special significance for it. For Quakers "concern" is such a word. Although used frequently by Friends for some passing whim or fancy, it should be reserved for a powerfully felt desire by an individual or group to bring about a needed improvement in society­ locally, nationally, or internationally. Hence Quakers have often felt moved by what they believed was a divinely-inspired concern. Usually they have acted upon that desire individually and have then attempted to enlist the support of other Quakers in that cause. Hence it has become a collective concern. An example of such a situation would be the protest which a small group of Friends in German­ town, Pennsylvania, made in 1688 against slavery. Slowly other Quakers became sensitive on that issue, and decades before the Civil War, all Friends in the United States had freed their slaves. Subsequently many Quakers participated in the Underground Rail­ road and other efforts to bring freedom to Negroes or Blacks, despite the fact that Friends sometimes had to break the laws of the United States to carry out their concern. The purpose of this essay is to consider in one ... to the World 13 small book several of the contributions to human bet­ terment Quakers have made in the nearly 350 years of their history. In some respects, therefore, it may seem like a litany of praise. Although it is intended to accent the positive, that does not mean that the writer is unaware of the chasm which often separates Quaker aspirations and Quaker actions. Certainly membership in the Religious Society of Friends brings with it no plaques for perfection, no halos, no passports to heaven. We have produced few, if any, saints. But we have been blessed with leaders and many more participants in a wide variety of causes for human betterment than one might expect from such a small group. The theme of this essay js positive; the author has written elsewhere about the shortcomings of the Religious Society of Friends.

Utilizing archival sources and oral history interviews from across Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, the United States, and the United Kingdom, Camp David’s Shadow recasts the early history of the peace process. It explains how a comprehensive settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict with provisions for a resolution of the Palestinian question gave way to the facilitation of bilateral peace between Egypt and Israel. As recently declassified sources reveal, the completion of the Camp David Accords—via intensive American efforts— actually enabled Israeli expansion across the Green Line, undermining the possibility of Palestinian sovereignty in the occupied territories. By examining how both the concept and diplomatic practice of autonomy were utilized to address the Palestinian question, and the implications of the subsequent Israeli and U.S. military intervention in Lebanon, the dissertation explains how and why the Camp David process and its aftermath adversely shaped the prospects of a negotiated settlement between Israelis and Palestinians in the 1990s. In linking the developments of the late 1970s and 1980s with the Madrid Conference and Oslo Accords in the decade that followed, the dissertation charts the role played by American, Middle Eastern, international, and domestic actors in curtailing the possibility of Palestinian self-determination.

    Landrum Bolling: Quaker Luminary Friday, November 9, 2018 7:25 AM Landrum Bolling was an educator, journalist, philanthropist, author, and activist for Middle East peace. Bolling died on January 17, 2018 at age 104 Bolling worked to bridge divides among ethnic, religious and national groups, and to nonviolently resolve conflicts. The road to peace, Bolling persuaded, could only begin with listening to, and trying to understand, an adversary’s story. Bolling told his students and colleagues that all peacemaking begins with listening. “Cultivate the habits of patient, open listening,” he said in a 1984 interview. “I think that whatever success I've had in gaining access and being able to talk comes from the judgement people made that I could listen.” Landrum Bolling was born in 1913 to a Baptist family in rural Tennessee, and had been convinced by the Quaker faith by the time he became a young college professor at Beloit University and Brown University. With the rise of Nazism and the start of World War II, Bolling found himself caught in an ethical battle between his Quaker values and his feeling of humanitarian responsibility. Bolling resigned his professorship and changed his status from conscientious objector to enlist as a war correspondent to cover the war for a group of Wisconsin newspapers. That job took him to his first encounter with Sarajevo, when he was one of few reporters to witness its liberation from the Nazis. Bolling was in North Africa when Nazi Germany surrendered. Hearing rumors that French troops had committed a massacre of Algerian Muslims who had protested French rule, Bolling became the first foreign reporter to witness and report the atrocity that the French authorities had tried to cover up.

Bolling By Allan Kellum Few Americans have personally known such a variety of Middle East leaders as has Landrum R. Bolling. His past and present contacts have ranged from the foreign ministers of virtually all countries in the area to Anwar Sadat, Golda Meir, Menachem Begin, King Hussein, President Assad and Yasser Arafat. Over the years, Dr. Bolling has received more than 25 honorary doctorates, but disclaims Middle East academic credentials. "I'm not a Middle East scholar, and I don't speak or read either Hebrew or Arabic," he explains. What he does possess, however, is a genuine and intense interest in global war and peace. While not claiming any specific successes in the Mideast peace process over the years, Dr. Bolling does offer these words of advice to would-be peacemakers: "Cultivate the habits of patient, open listening... I think that whatever success I've had in gaining access and being able to talk comes from the judgement people made that I could listen." The Lures of Academia and Journalism As a Quaker, Dr. Bolling struggled with whether or not to participate in World War II. Ultimately, his conscience led him to leave his teaching post at Beloit College (Wisconsin) to become a war correspondent in the Mediterranean region, including Italy and the Balkans. From that point on, he has experienced the twin, sometimes opposing, pulls of academia and journalism. After the war he returned briefly to Beloit College, but then headed back to Europe as a foreign correspondent from 1946-48.

    “Explaining the Carter administration’s Israeli-Palestinian Solution”1 Diplomatic History, forthcoming At the Camp David summit in September 1978, the Carter administration detailed the nucleus of what was to become the dominant approach for addressing the question of Palestine. In “The Framework for Peace in the Middle East,” the United States supported a gradual resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict instead of immediate Israeli withdrawal, Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) involvement, and Palestinian statehood alongside Israel. The U.S. position was at odds not only with most members of the League of Arab States but also with most other members of the international community. Understanding the U.S. position under President Jimmy Carter is much more than just an assessment of Carter’s policy. Rather, it is really about understanding the heart of the U.S.-led peace process for the last several decades. Carter’s policy is especially important because Carter administration ideas ended up being the core of the largest effort to date to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Oslo process (1993-2001), even though the Oslo Declaration of Principles was negotiated without U.S. mediation. Furthermore, some of Carter’s policy arguably remains the basis for the peace process even into the Barack H. Obama administration 30 years later. The most compelling explanation for the core elements of Carter policy is that U.S. officials accepted similar ends but favored different means than most other countries. Contrary to later critics, the United States under Carter did oppose Israeli occupation and settlements. But it chose a different policy path than the international community to express that opposition for two reasons.

Bohning, Chemical Heritage Foundation It was an "idyllic" period for a young boy born on 31 October 1925 into a Berlin family of culture and accomplishment. In the summer there were long hikes to the snow-covered areas of the Austrian or Swiss Alps, followed by a refreshing drink of naturally cool apple cider and perhaps a snowball fight with his friends. During the school year in Berlin, he was very happy with his elementary school teacher, who stayed with his class during the first four years of schooling. He even was caught up in the excitement accompanying the massive parades of Adolf Hitler. But the innocence of youth and the protection of his parents could not shield Otto Theodor Benfey from being frightened when he watched some boys jeering another boy their age as they squeezed him into a wire trash basket and rolled him down a hill. When his family decided to send him to live with friends in England in 1936, he experienced a similar taunting from his Berlin peers which included statements about his Jewish background. Yet for the ten-year-old Benfey, the first two years in "exile" were still idyllic. He was staying in a "lovely place" with the MendIs, a family he had known in Berlin. He was attending the Watford Grammar School with their son, Wolfgang, who was Benfey's age. And for the first two summers, he went back to Berlin on transatlantic luxury liners, once seeing Max Schrneling returning after his defeat by Joe Louis.
