This research paper describes a corpus based transliteration system for Punjabi language. The existence of two scripts for Punjabi language has created a script barrier between the Punjabi literature written in India and in Pakistan. This research project has developed a new system for the first time of its kind for Shahmukhi script of Punjabi language. The proposed system for Shahmukhi to Gurmukhi transliteration has been implemented with various research techniques based on language corpus. The corpus analysis program has been run on both Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi corpora for generating statistical data for different types like character, word and n-gram frequencies. This statistical analysis is used in different phases of transliteration. Potentially, all members of the substantial Punjabi community will benefit vastly from this transliteration system. 1 Introduction One of the great challenges before Information Technology is to overcome language barriers dividing the mankind so that everyone can communicate with everyone else on the planet in real time. South Asia is one of those unique parts of the world where a single language is written in different scripts. This is the case, for example, with Punjabi language spoken by tens of millions of people but written in Indian East Punjab (20 million) in Gurmukhi script (a left to right script based on Devanagari) and in Pakistani West Punjab (80 million), written in Shahmukhi script (a right to left script based on Arabic), and by a growing number of Punjabis (2 million) in the EU and the US in the Roman script. -

PREVIEW OF THE IPA HANDBOOK Handbook of the International Phonetic Association: A guide to the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet PARTI Introduction to the IPA 1. What is the International Phonetic Alphabet? The aim of the International Phonetic Association is to promote the scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science. For both these it is necessary to have a consistent way of representing the sounds of language in written form. From its foundation in 1886 the Association has been concerned to develop a system of notation which would be convenient to use, but comprehensive enough to cope with the wide variety of sounds found in the languages of the world; and to encourage the use of thjs notation as widely as possible among those concerned with language. The system is generally known as the International Phonetic Alphabet. Both the Association and its Alphabet are widely referred to by the abbreviation IPA, but here 'IPA' will be used only for the Alphabet. The IPA is based on the Roman alphabet, which has the advantage of being widely familiar, but also includes letters and additional symbols from a variety of other sources. These additions are necessary because the variety of sounds in languages is much greater than the number of letters in the Roman alphabet. The use of sequences of phonetic symbols to represent speech is known as transcription. The IPA can be used for many different purposes. For instance, it can be used as a way to show pronunciation in a dictionary, to record a language in linguistic fieldwork, to form the basis of a writing system for a language, or to annotate acoustic and other displays in the analysis of speech. -

D.S.RICE THE UNIQUE IBN AL-BAWWAB MANUSCRIPT The text of the Qur'an was recorded'in the Prophet's lifetime, on a variety of writing materials.These inclu- ded such diverse materials as papyrus, parchment, leather, limestone slabs,shoulder blades,ribs, saddle- boards, &c. The Qur'an was first collectedunder the first caliph, Abu Bakr, and codified under the third caliph, 'Uthman. It was, in all likelihood, written on parchmenton both occasions,although one sourcehas it that papyrus was used on the first. All the early Qur'ans which have so far come to light are on parchment, with the exception of a small frag- ment on papyruswhich is attributed to the third Islamic century. The earliest Qur'ans w\ich have reachedus are written in variety of angular scripts commonly-but inappro- priately-describedas Kufic. No completeKufic Qur'an has, to my knowledge, survived and none is provided with a colophon. It is still a matter of controversy whether we possessany Qur'an which can be dated to the first century of the Muslim era.There are a number "signatures" of coclices which bear of the caliphs 'Uthman and 'Ali, but these have been shown to be later pious forgeries. Thanks to the studies published in the course of the last fifty years,especially by B. Moritz, J. von Karaba- cek, G. Bergstrásser,O. Pretzl,A. Grohmann, N. Abbott, and G. Levi della Vida much progresshas been made in the provisional dating of certain Kufic Qur'ans to the late first and to the second century of the Hijra. -

The main discourse on Islamic art in the western academia primarily views Islamic art through the lens of art history and sociology of art. Islamic art is considered as sacred in Islamic civilisation and culture, and derives its sanctity from the Quran as the fountain from which it has emanated, which Muslims consider to be the Word of God, much like Christ is the Word of God in Christianity. The Quran has played a formative role in shaping the trinity of sacred Islamic art which is Quranic recitation, calligraphy and architecture. However, another approach which not only is viable but can be considered of great importance to the study of Islamic art, is the employment and utilisation of principles of Islamic philosophy and Sufism which were the pillars of the intellectual milieu in which a given work of art is produced. The application of such principles allows a more comprehensive and detailed interpretation of a work of art. In this paper, the primary Islamic philosophy and sufi doctrines that will be dis- cussed are the concepts of imagination, colour, and calligraphy and examples of their applica- tion in the khānqāh and shrine ensemble of Shaykh Ṣafi al-Din Ardabīlī in Ardabil, Iran. Corresponding Author: Dr. Ghadeer Dardier Afify Khalifa Abstract: The Pen is a mean of science, learning, and transferring science, where Allah Ta'ala explained of what is concerning of the Pen or "by the pen" in the fourth verse of Sūrat al-ʻAlaq. This is like Allah's saying; "Who has taught by the pen". Ibn al-Qayyim-may Allah have mercy- said; "with pen, science is immortal and without writing, the news of some of the times is interrupted". From here, the importance of the pen and the pen boxes were specified, as well as the attention for the quality of the raw material from which pen were manufactured, likewise the variety of ornament and materials used in decoration. So, the analytical and artistic study of the three unpublished pen boxes preserved in the Museum of the faculty of Applied Arts -Helwan University will reflect and clarify the value and importance of the scientific life in Islamic Egypt. ISBN 9780199324576. Abstract An understanding of the nature of writing is an important foundation for studies of how people read and how they learn to read. This chapter discusses the characteristics of modern writing systems with a view toward providing that foundation. We consider both the appearance of writing systems and how they function. All writing represents the words of a language according to a set of rules. However, important properties of a language often go unrepresented in writing. Change and variation in the spoken language result in complex links to speech. Redundancies in language and writing mean that readers can often get by without taking in all of the visual information. These redundancies also mean that readers must often supplement the visual information that they do take in with knowledge about the language and about the world. Keywords: writing systems, script, alphabet, syllabary, logography, semasiography, glottography, underrepresentation, conservatism, graphotactics The goal of this chapter is to examine the characteristics of writing systems that are in use today and to consider the implications of these characteristics for how people read. As we will see, a broad understanding of writing systems and how they work can place some important constraints on our conceptualization of the nature of the reading process. It can also constrain our theories about how children learn to read and about how they should be taught to do so.
