2017-18 When you look around today you find that there is little evidence of sacrifice for the sake of society. A person may call himself or herself a great devotee or a sadhaka (spiritual aspirant) or a scientist but without the spirit of sacrifice there is nothing great in that person. Seva (selfless service) is the salt which lends savour to life. The spirit of sacrifice imparts fragrance to living. One may live for sixty, seventy, or eighty years but it will have no meaning unless the life has been devoted to ennobling one's character and rendering selfless service to others. ~ Divine Discourse, December 11, 1985 ~ ANNUAL REPORT 2017 - 2018

Foreword Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations - an introduction

The Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, founded by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba in the year 1965, is a service organisation with a spiritual core and base to benefit all mankind irrespective of religion, caste, creed or sect. The Organisation serves as a platform for its members to undertake service and other activities motivated by an urge for one's own transformation with the aim of realising one's inherent divinity. Without any distinction of religion, nationality, race, socio-economic status, either for those who work in the Organisation or for those who are served by it, the Organisation transcends all barriers leading humanity towards the ideal of 'Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man'. The concept of fees or membership subscription is alien to the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, for there cannot be any fee or subscription for one's journey towards his own self. “Sathya Sai Seva Samithis are built The organisation functions through its primary units on love. They thrive on love; they called as Samithis and Bhajan Mandalis of which spread love. The first lesson sevā (selfless service) has to be learned in the family circle itself. Father, mother, brothers, sisters—in this limited group, which is well-knit, one must engage in loving service and prepare for the wider sevā that awaits outside the home. The character of each individual member determines the peace and prosperity of the family. The character of each family is the basic factor that decides the happiness and joy of the village or the community. And the nation's progress is based on the strength and happiness of the communities which are its components. So, for the welfare of the country and of the entire world, the spirit of service, vital enthusiasm, constructive imagination, pure

motivation and unselfish alertness are all urgently needed. Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Youth Parthi Yatra The youth have a critical role to play in the well being of the society and nation. From time immemorial, it is the youth who have come forward as saviours, as emancipators, as dreamers in impossible missions. It is thereby important to inspire the younger generation to take to the path of righteousness and plunge into action for the welfare of one and all. The life of Sri Sathya Baba and His monumental humanitarian works are undoubtedly a robust and perennial source of inspiration to inspire every heart. With a view to motivate the youth, who are the future of our nation, to step in for the welfare of society, a Youth Parthi Yatra was organised from 29th August to 31st August, 2017 wherein around 400 youth (both ladies and gents) from West Bengal participated. As a part of this three day event, the youth were engaged in several service activities within the ashram besides witnessing the benevolent institutions built by Baba such as the Sri Sathya Sai University, Super Speciality Hospital, Water Project. The youth also visited other places of interest including the Chaitanya Jyoti Museum which is a repository of the saga of Sri Sathya Sai. A youth conference was also organised as part of the yatra.

State-wide Disaster Management Initiative “Do not restrict your service within certain limits. Be alert to the call everywhere, at all times; be ready with a smile, a kind word, a useful suggestion, some knowledgeable care, a pleasant reply. Look for chances to relieve, rescue or resuscitate. Train yourselves so that you may render help quickly and well.” This call from Sri Sathya Sai Baba led to the setting up of the National Disaster Management Initiative of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations which aims at preparing sevadals in all states of India to take up rescue, relief and rehabilitation work at times of natural and man-made calamities. In West Bengal, Disaster Management preparedness has been taken up by all the 20 districts during the year. Each district is equipped with trained disaster management teams and the required equipment. The Mahila Vibhag have also trained themselves to become equally adept in carrying out Disaster Management activities. The teams conducted training programmes for the youth in towns and villages covering various rescue techniques, first aid measures, sanitation, team building and resource management so that the youth can rush to the most affected areas in the quickest time to save lives. In addition, the teams have conducted Disaster Management Awareness programmes for the youth of the adopted villages under the Sri Sathya Sai Village Integrated Programme (SSSVIP), college and school students in many districts towards capacity building in Disaster preparedness across the state. Cleaning and Sanitation Programme Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Driven by this BANKURA motto, various samithis of Bankura district came together to take up cleaning of the Bankura Bus Stand. About 33 Sevadal members participated in this activity during the national wide ‘Swatchata se Divyata tak’ initiative in 2017. On another occasion, cleaning of the Dwarakeswar river bed was organised during Mela on Chaitra Sankranti. Sevadal members turned up in huge numbers to make this event a success. Tree Plantation Swami has always emphasised that children must be taught the importance of love and care. Children could be imbibed with an instinct to care and protect by engaging them in activities wherein they have a chance to see life grow. Planting trees is a great way to develop such an instinct. In view of this, a tree plantation activity was organised for the Balvikas students by Bankura Town Samithi. About 15 children Cleaning & Sanitation at Bus Stand participated in the programme and they have been given the onus of looking after the saplings.
