praise for volume 2: dancing with imperialism In this book Moncourt and Smith are offering some “institutional memory” for those of us who are struggling against the horrible situa- tions that unbridled capitalism and imperialism have forced upon us. Such institutional memory is desperately needed. They remind us that a generation ago a RAF political prisoner in Germany wrote that the world was facing a “…fascism that no longer requires mass mobilization of ideologically motivated fascists, but only bureaucrats and technocrats in the service of the imperialist state.” A political observation that a generation later we still have not adequately mobilized around. Here too, Ward Churchill lets us see that not nearly enough has been done to provide a similar institutional memory regarding those who struggled against the same forces in the United States in that same time period. Is it any wonder that the fight against prison isolation in the U.S. is hobbled by a failure to realize that this country’s 80,000 isolated prisoners suffer under hellish conditions originally designed to destroy political prisoners? Knowledge that would force U.S. prisoners to recognize that their struggle requires political and not “legal” solutions. Moncourt and Smith also remind us of the crucial strategic roles wimmin played in the struggles centered in Germany. Widespread and courageous roles that even left me stunned as to how little I really knew of that aspect! From this book you will learn the mistakes of a group that was both large and strong, but which (like our own home-grown attempts in this regard) was unable to successfully communicate with the working class of a “democratic” country on a level that met their needs. While the armed struggle can be the seed of something much larger, it is also another means of reaching out and communicating with the people. It runs for 3 hours in 2 acts with a 15 minute interval. There is a cast of 30 (18M, 12F). The Baader-Meinhof Gang rose during West Germany's years of fashionable middle-class student anarchy (1968-77). Intellectuals supported their politics - the Palestinian cause, anti-US bases in Germany, anti-Vietnam War. Popularity dwindled as they moved to bank robbery, kidnap and extortion. The play covers their rise and fall. They form the Red Army Faction aka Baader-Meinhof Gang. Key members - Baader, Meinhof, Ensslin, Jan- Carl Raspe, Holger Meins - are jailed (1972). Meins dies by hunger strike (1974). The rest commit suicide: Meinhof (1976), Baader, Ensslin, Raspe (18 October 1977). The play's own history sounds awful. Drama school LAMDA commissioned it as a piece of new writing (two words guaranteed to chill the blood) - for 30 graduating actors.

Darin erlöst eine schöne Prinzessin einen Prinzen, der von einer bösen Hexe in einen Frosch verwandelt und in einen Brunnen gesperrt worden war. Als er, wieder ein Mensch, in sein Königreich zurückkehren will, holt ihn sein Diener, der treue Heinrich, mit dem Pferde- wagen ab. Über diesen heißt es: „Der treue Heinrich hatte sich so betrübt, als sein Herr war in einen Frosch verwandelt worden, daß er drei Bande hatte um sein Herz le- gen lassen, damit es ihm nicht vor Weh und Traurigkeit zerspränge.“ Erst nachdem sein Herr erlöst ist, brechen die Bande von seinem Herzen. So wie dem eisernen Heinrich ist es mir, als ich mit 13 Jahren die DPA Nachricht vom Tod meiner Mut- Meinhof-Töchter Regine, Bettina (1969): Im Scheidungskrieg zerrieben ter, Ulrike Meinhof, bekam, er- gangen. Eiserne Bande legten sich um mein Herz. Ich konnte nichts fühlen, ich konnte nicht weinen, ich konnte es nicht begreifen. Mei- ne Mutter war wie der Prinz im Märchen verwandelt worden. Wie ein großes schwarzes Monster hat- te sich ein Mythos um sie gelegt. Etwas, das größer war als ich, verstellte mir den Blick auf meine Mutter und, wie ich später begriff, auf mich selbst. Wie der eiserne Heinrich hörte ich nicht auf zu warten, in der Hoffnung, mir mei- ne Mutter irgendwann zurücker- obern zu können. Seit sie in den Untergrund gegangen war, gehör- te sie der Öffentlichkeit mehr als uns Kindern, den Verwandten und nächsten Freunden.

Recent French Extradition Cases This section of the appendix contains the first published collection of recent French extradition cases dealing with the application of the political offense exception to terrorists. Because of the selective fashion in which French decisional law is reported, many French extradition cases are never reproduced in any French case reporter. The purpose of this appendix is to provide an English speaking audience with the substance of opinions which are otherwise nearly impossible to obtain. The editors hope that this collection will aid comparative research and contribute to an informed debate on the political offense exception. All of the cases reproduced below are from the various courts of appeal, as the French extradition statute excludes Supreme Court review in extra- dition cases (although the Conseil D'Etatmay occasionally act, generally post facto).

Manche von ihnen seit über 20 Jahren 27 Jahre nach der Gründung der RAF und fünf Jahre nach der Einstellung der tödlichen Angriffe sitzen noch zehn ehemalige Mitglieder der Stadtguerilla-Gruppe in deutschen Gefängnissen ein - manche von ihnen seit mehr als 20 Jahren. Während die RAF im April 1992 die Eskalation herunterfuhr, um politischen Raum für die Lösung der Gefangenenfrage zu schaffen, ist der Vergeltungswille des Staates ungebrochen. Die Kinkel-Initiative vom Januar 1992, als von Staatsseite das Angebot an die RAF herangetragen wurde, bei Einstellung des Bewaffneten Kampfes bestimmte Gefangene vorzeitig zu entlassen, wurde - sofern es überhaupt jemals ernst gemeint gewesen sein sollte - spätestens wieder fallen gelassen, als bekannt wurde, daß der Staatsschutzspitzel Klaus Steinmetz sehr nahe an der RAF war und den Ermittlungsbehörden eine militärische Lösung des Problems RAF greifbar schien. Auch nach der Rücknahme der Eskalation durch die RAF ist die Staatsseite den Gefangenen nicht entgegengekommen. Warum sollte sie auch? Der Druck ist verschwunden, seit die hohen Herrn wieder ungestört mit ihrem Dackel um die Ecke Gassi gehen können. Dabei wäre schon aus medizinischen Gründen die Freilassung zumindest von Helmut Pohl und Heidi Schulz dringend geboten. The children of postwar Germany—the children of Nazis—had lost their fathers in the war, though not always as a result of their death. For many members of this generation, even if their fathers did survive the war and perhaps even years in POW camps, they often returned irreparably physically and psychologically damaged. Once these children reached adolescence, many began to question their parents’ involvement with Nazism and their role during the war. Those who had participated in the atrocities of the war and those whose silence betrayed their guilt were problematic role models for their children, unable to fulfill their roles as parents with any moral authority.1 When these children came of age in the 1960s and entered universities, there was a major shift in the conversation about the war and the process of coming to terms with the past. The members of the postwar generation made themselves heard through large-scale protest and, eventually, violence. In this series of essays, I will look at the ways in which artists of this generation created work in response to their troubled history and the generational politics of the 1960s and 70s.

Nach einem längeren Cefa ngnisaufent halt und politisch ruhigen Zeiten in den 1980er Jahren trat er in den späten 1990er und 2000er Jahren als Neo-Nationalsozialist und Holocaustleugner auf. Mahlers „Entpuppung" (Wolfgang Kraushaar) beschäftigt die bundesdeutsche Öffentlichkeit bis heute. Die vorliegende Arbeit geht der Frage nach, ob in Mahlers Biographie - neben allen Diskontinuitäten - auch kontinuierliche Elemente auszumachen sind und kontextualisiert Mahlers ideologische Entwicklung mit dem Umgang mit den nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen nach 1945. More precisely, the thesis sets out to conceptualise how revolutionary identities are (re)produced in radical ‘discourse communities’ (Apter 1997b) by interpreting socio-political realities, constructing counter-memories, and establishing a semantics of ‘armed struggle’ to legitimise the use of violent means in non- revolutionary situations and pacified, democratic societies. Its theoretical framework builds on Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory (Luhmann 1995a, 1998, 2002a; Luhmann and Hellmann 1996) as well as on seminal work in social movement studies (Bosi and della Porta 2012; Caiani et al. 2012; della Porta 1995; Zwerman et al. 2000), social semiotics and critical discourse analysis (Fairclough 1995c; Fairclough et al. 2011; Halliday 1978b, 1985; Wodak 1989, 1996; Wodak and Meyer 2009). The project’s empirical chapters comparatively analyse the writings of two left-wing armed formations in late 20th century Germany and the ways in which these were perceived in the contemporary radical counter-public. Case studies are the ‘2nd of June Movement’ and the ‘Revolutionary Cells’, two German groups ‘in the shadow of the RAF’ (Kraushaar 2006b).
