"PYRENEAN IRON ROUTE” EXHIBITION AT THE BASQUE RAILWAY MUSEUM

On Tuesday, the Basque Railway Museum, which belongs to Euskotren, a Public Company dependent on the Basque Government, opened an exhibition dedicated to the “Pyrenean Iron Route”. It is a traveling exhibition put on display at the various museums that make up this route, including the Basque Railway Museum (-).

The Pyrenean Iron Route, sponsored by the Council of Europe, the Governments of the Basque Country, and , as well as the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, includes various museums, cultural parks and interpretation centres that, in one way or another, are linked to the history of iron in its most diverse aspects: mines, foundries, machine-tools and, as in the case of the Basque Railway Museum, railway lines.

Today, the Pyrenean Iron Route consists of 22 cultural heritage and tourist sites spread throughout Catalonia, Andorra, southern and the Basque Country. More specifically, they are:

Mining:

• Paisaia Kulturala de (Gipuzkoa).

24 large panels enable visitors to this Temporary "Pyrenean Iron Route" Exhibition to learn about the rich cultural heritage relating to iron that developed over the centuries on both sides of the through the most representative images of these 22 cultural resources and brief descriptive texts written in the four official languages of the various territories of this cultural route: Basque, Catalan, French and Spanish.

This travelling exhibition has come to Azpeitia after being on display at the Elgoibar Machine Tool Museum and will remain in the building of the former Railway electric traction substation, at the Basque Railway Museum, until 4 March, when it will go on to the Agorregi Foundry in Aia.

The Basque Railway Museum is located in Azpeitia (Gipuzkoa) and houses one of the most outstanding railway collections in Europe, featuring steam, diesel and electric locomotives, railcars, and a selection of carriages and wagons.

It also includes one of the most complete collections of machine tools in the Basque Country from the former Urola Railway depot, as well as uniforms used in railway companies since the late 19th century, together with one of the best collections of railway clocks in the world.

The Euskotren Basque Railway Museum opening hours are:

• Tuesday to Saturday: 10:00 to 13:30 and 15:00 to 18:30.

• Sundays and public holidays (except Mondays): 10:30 to 14:00.
