Benefice community newsletter for Tortworth, Tytherington, Rockhampton, Cromhall and Falfield

Volume 11 Issue 11 November 2014 Remembering

On 4 th August this year, the Queen led the nation in commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War at a service in Glasgow Cathedral where she was joined by other heads of state. The day ended with a vigil at Westminster Abbey where a single candle was extinguished at 11:00 pm, a century on from the moment when war had been declared.

In the UK’s villages, towns and cities in 2014, communities are mark- ing the centenary of the start of World War One. As a nation we will honour the fallen, recognising their service and sacrifice for our country and we will remember all who have served and suffered as a result of conflict.

There are an estimated 100,000 war memorials all across the UK list- ing the names of those who gave their lives in the Great War. Every settlement in Scotland and Northern Ireland lost a member of their community in the Great War and in England and Wales there are only 52 ‘Thankful Villages’ where all those who left to serve in battle came home again.

In August, dedicated a whole day to reading the names, from war memorials across the county, of those who were killed in the First World War. The Arch- of Cheltenham, the Venerable Robert Springett, describes it in the latest edition of The Messenger newsletter as: “deeply moving, a reminder of how that war affected almost every family and community. Its deepest power was, though, simply in the reading of names. Names are so precious, the way in which we are known to each other as father, son, daughter, husband, partner, lover and, of course, they are the way in which we are known to God, whom the psalmist says formed each one of us in our mother’s womb, who call us, who holds us as beloved.

“As the names of those killed in the Great War recede into the carved stone of our memorials, it would be easy to forget. In this centenary year, let us remember them, the humanity, the vulnerable, the uniqueness of each person, and those who loved and mourned them.

“In our world today where still innocent victims of every race and creed lose their lives in war and conflict, it is in this remembering that we discover anew our common humanity, our hope for peace and commit ourselves to a better future, for which they laid down their lives that we may have a new heart and a new spirit.”

What is Movember?

The reason for the poor state of men’s health are numerous and complex and include:

• Lack of awareness and understanding of the health issues men face • Men not openly discussing their health and how they’re feeling • Reluctance to take action when men don’t feel physical or mentally well • Men engaging in risky activities that threaten their health • Stigmas surrounding mental health

As a global men’s health movement, the Movember Foundation aims to help towards im- proving the lives of men around the world through funding programmes in the areas of: Awareness & Education, Living with Cancer, Research and Mental Health. It sees success as moving towards progress on:

• Reduced mortality from prostate, testicular cancer and men’s suicide • Men living with prostate or testicular cancer being physically and mentally well • Men and boys understanding how to be mentally healthy and taking action when they experience mental health problems • Men and boys with mental health problems not being discriminated against

Rogue traders in South Gloucestershire

Officers at South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards have been made aware of two re- cent incidents involving rogue traders in the local area.

It has been reported that shoppers have been approached in supermarket car parks by men offering televisions for sale. The units are sealed and upon opening them the unsuspecting shoppers find the television do not work and of course, they have no way of claiming their money back.

If you have been approached by someone offering goods in unusual circumstances like those described, please report it to the Police on 101.

Secondly, officers have received reports of a resident being repeatedly targeted by rogue trad- ers, returning on 3 occasions asking for money.

The rogues initially claimed to have done some work to the drains outside the resident’s home and that they must pay for that work. They then returned twice more requesting further pay- ments for follow up work.

This is a scam. Rogues will misuse well known company names to help convince their victims to part with large sums of money.

If you receive an unexpected visitor at your door demanding money for work you have not con- sented to, please close the door and contact the Police immediately on 101 or Trading Stan- dards (via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline) on 03454 04 05 06.

Calling all Cromhall Residents!

November 30 th is Saint Andrew’s Day. This is a special day for Cromhall, as Saint An- drew is the patron saint of our Parish Church, and of course our Village School. This year in particular is an important one for our Church, as it has now become one of twenty-one churches in the listed as being ‘at risk’ due to issues with the building.

There has been a church in Cromhall most probably since the Dark Ages, although the present church was built in the late 13 th or early 14 th century. Now a Grade I listed building, one of its outstanding features is the 14 th cen- tury south porch, with its ancient oak door, which welcomes parishioners and visitors whenever they come to the church today. Many internal alterations were made in 1769-71, and again from 1851-54, which removed most of the medieval features and introduced “modern” concepts. At this time the present pews were installed .

St Andrew’s is the parish church of Cromhall, and as such, it is available to every- one. It is the only public building in the village open in daylight hours 365 days a year, for those of all faiths or none. As well as being used for regular Sunday wor- ship, it is used for baptisms (christenings), weddings, and funerals. It is, how- ever, also here to serve people in other ways as well: to support everyone in times of sorrow, sickness or any kind of need, physical as well as spiritual. It is a peaceful and quiet place, where anyone can go to pray and maybe light a candle, or just sit and find space in their busy lives to think.

Much of the history of Cromhall and its people is reflected in the building’s walls, floor, and in its churchyard. You can only wonder at the efforts of villagers over the centuries to build, maintain and adapt the Church to keep it as the focal point of their community life. You can feel their legacy in the very fabric of the place, and see it in the worn stones where they trod, the hinges of the ancient doors they walked through, and hear it in the bells they rang.

However, the burden of maintaining this precious building now falls on a shrinking congregation who are all growing older and less able to do all they used to do. Further, you may be surprised to learn that as a parish in Gloucester Diocese, nowadays we receive no central funding at all . Noth- ing from the , or the Government, just a small grant from the Parish Council to help maintain the churchyard. Our income comes from the regular giving of church members (approximately 30) and from the fundraising events they or- ganise.

In order to continue as a functioning Church of England parish we are committed to giving an ever increasing sum of money through the Parish Share system (£11,611 in 2013) to the Diocese of Gloucester to cover clergy costs, and we have to find funding

for running costs and repairs to the building ourselves.

In 2013, as many of you know, we completed the installation of a disabled access toilet under the tower. In 2011/12 we landscaped the new Garden of Remembrance, and in 2010 we had to replace the heating boiler. These projects however have left us with a better facility for the Village but no financial reserves at all.

St Andrew’s is your church, it is here for all of you to use, and the people of the congregation are here to help and welcome you if you wish. Continued on next page

Calling all Cromhall Residents! continued:

Please, support your church in whatever way you can, be it ever so little, it all counts.

Contact our Treasurer, Stephen Youngs on 01454 261793 or [email protected] . Stephen can answer any questions you may have and advise on gifts, legacies and regular giving. If you can help in other ways, for example with churchyard maintenance, please contact Doug Collett our Churchwarden on 01454 294545 or [email protected] .

You can find more information on where our income comes from and where it is spent on our web site, www.saintandrewscromhall.org.uk .

Whilst keeping our Church open needs the support of those in the village who may never attend a Sunday service but nonetheless value the history and heritage of the building, you are all of course most welcome to attend any of our Sunday services. None are es- pecially formal and all have light refreshments afterwards. Children are welcome. It would be particularly encouraging if villagers made an effort to come to church on Saint Andrew’s Day, 30 th November, when we have a United Benefice Service at 10 a.m. Members of the PCC will be on hand then, as indeed most Sundays, to discuss the future of the Church and show you around. The days are long gone when a new face gets ‘pounced on’ to do things or join anything! All are welcome and none are judged.

TYTHERINGTON MEMORIAL

DEDICATION CEREMONY BY

There was a large congregation of villagers and others at Tytherington on Saturday afternoon, when the war memorial erected in memory of the fallen men of the parish was dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Gloucester.

The memorial which is a Cornish wheel cross of silver grey Cornish granite, with a base of the same material, is mounted on a solid block of stone from the local quarries, measuring 4ft by 4ft, embedded in concrete the whole erection stands 12 feet high. It is placed in a commanding position in the south-west corner of the churchyard, where the wall has been taken down and railings erected, thus enabling it to be seen to advantage. The inscription on the base is:- "To the glory of God in thankfulness for vic- tory and peace, and in ever living honour of the men of this parish who gave their lives for their King and country in the European War 1914-1918 and whose names are inscribed hereon."

The whole of the work was satisfactorily carried out by Mr F. K. Howell, of the Thornbury Monumental Works.

The service, which was impressive, was attended by a company of 40 local ex-Servicemen, in charge of Mr Thomas Wilson (Welsh Regiment), who paraded at the railway station, and headed by the Tytherington Church Prize Military Band marched to the memorial where they lined up in front of those present. The relatives of the fallen men were in the enclosure round the memorial. In addition to the Bishop the following clergy were present: The Rev’d Cornwall (Thornbury), the Rev’d W. P. Kitson (the vicar of Tytherington), and the Rev’d W. H. Whittaker (Rockhampton). The hymn 'When I survey the wondrous cross' was sung and after prayers the Bishop dedicated the memorial.

The hymn "For all the saints" was sung and after prayers by the vicar the "Last Post" was sounded by by Mr F. Kingscott. The Blessing was pronounced by the Bishop, a verse of the National Anthem being played by the band, who also accompanied the singing of the hymns.
