The decade leading up to the 1952 revolution was one characterized with a heightened state of popular mobilisation, much of which the Free Officers’ movement capitalized upon. Thus, in focusing on three of the Revolution’s main milestones; the resistance to the tripartite aggression on Port Said (1956), the building of the Aswan High Dam (1960- 1971), and the popular warfare against Israel in Suez (1967-1973), I shed light on the popular struggles behind the events. -

Design Analysis of a New Generation of Suezmax Tankers Igor Belamarić,1 Predrag Čudina,2 Kalman Žiha3 A thoroughly investigated design of a new generation of Suezmax tankers incorporating the builder's consideration in the form of a condensed mathematical model is presented. The design model is provided for practical application and for a fast assessment of the conceptual design. The design model is subjected to different methods of design analysis in order determine an adequate design and the appropriate procedure applicable in the design office. In addition, the computational, building and operational uncertainties involved in the design and mathematical model are considered. The uncertainty analysis based on tolerances indicates a wider choice of designs within acceptable limits. There was a 6.75% year-on-year rise in revenues to USD5.46bn in 2014,compared to USD5.11bn recorded in 2013, as the waterway benefited from delays to the opening of the Panama Canal expansion. The country's location on the Mediterranean and Red Seas affords it access to major East-West shipping routes, and its Suez Canal-based ports feature as stops on a number of these routes. Egypt's Suez Canal ensures that the country is a major player in the global maritime sphere. The interim government has received substantial financial assistance for Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait - indicating regional support. The Suez Canal enjoyed strong throughput growth in 2014. The Egyptian infrastructure sector is picking up, which will boost dry bulk and project cargo volumes at Egypt's ports and on its roads. 2 Invest in Egypt Logistics & Transportation SOCIOECONOMIC IMPORTANCE A new navigation channel could increase throughput at East Port Said. Rising Suez Canal charges should see a further growth in revenues. The Suez Canal is benefiting from delays to the Panama Canal expansion, attracting new services. There is major investment of USD8.5bn being channeled into expanding the Suez Canal. The Baltic Exchange Capesize 5TC opened the week at $53,240/day and closed out the week up $8,069 settling today at $61,309/day. The Fronthaul C9 to the Far East reached $81,775/day! Kamsarmaxes are also obtaining excellent numbers, reports of an 81,000 DWT unit obtaining $36,500/day for a trip via east coast South America with delivery in Singapore. Coal voyages from Indonesia and Australia to India are seeing $38,250/day levels and an 81,000 DWT vessel achieved $34,000/day for 4-6 months T/C. A 63,000 DWT Ultramax open Southeast Asia fixed 5-7 months in the low $40,000/day levels while a 56,000 DWT supramax fixed a trip from Turkey to West Africa at $52,000/day. An Ultramax fixed from the US Gulf to the far east in the low $50,000/day. The Handysize index BHSI rose all week and finished at a new yearly high of 1925 points. A 37,000 DWT handy fixed a trip from East coast South America with alumina to Norway for $37,000/day plus a 28,000 DWT handy fixed from Santos to Morocco with sugar at $34,000/day. A 35,000 DWT handy was fixed from Morocco to Bangladesh at $45,250/day and in the Mediterranean a 37,000 DWT handy booked a trip from Turkey to the US Gulf with an intended cargo of steels at $41,000/day. -

1 A Brief History of Economic Dominance The United States has the sticks and carrots. —John Foster Dulles in a memorandum to President Dwight Eisenhower in the aftermath of the Suez crisis1 The Suez Canal is as good a metaphor as any for economic dominance. It is well known that the Suez crisis of 1956 irretrievably buried any hopes (or illusions, some would say) that the United Kingdom might retain its status as a great power. But the history of the canal actually bookends both the apogee and collapse of the British empire. And at both points in time, the economi- cally dominant creditor country gained at the expense of the enfeebled and indebted power. Opposed originally to the canal’s construction, which began in 1859, the United Kingdom subsequently rued its lack of a direct stake once the water- way’s strategic possibilities as its “highway to India” and “backdoor to the East” became evident. The original Suez Canal company was majority-owned by the French, with the Egyptian ruler, Ismail Pasha—the khedive or viceroy nominally representing the Ottoman ruler in Istanbul—enjoying a 44 percent stake. By 1875, however, Egypt teetered on the edge of insolvency, overstretched by military adventurism in the Sudan and Ethiopia, seduced into profligacy stemming from the khedive’s grandiose ambition to make Cairo the Paris-on- the-Nile, and debilitated by dwindling export revenues once stability returned to international cotton markets after the US Civil War. A debt-to-GDP ratio of close to 200 percent, mostly owed to restive European bondholders, forced the khedive to sell his stake for a paltry sum of 4 million pounds, which amounted to 4 percent of his debt and 7 percent of Egypt’s GDP at the time.
