1 TRANS-SIERRA RANGES GUIDE NO. 1.6 WHITE MOUNTAIN PEAK 14246 FEET CLASS 1 MILEAGE: 275 miles of paved road, 16 miles of excellent dirt road DRIVE: From US Highway 395 at Big Pine, CA. turn right (E) on paved State Route 168. At a fork in 2.2 miles bear left (right will put you on the Waucoba-Saline Valley Road) and drive 10.8 miles to the paved, signed White Mountain Road. Turn left (N) and drive 10.3 miles to the end of pavement at the signed Schulman Grove. Continuing N on the excellent dirt road and following signs toward Patriarch Grove, drive 16 miles to a locked gate at 11680 feet elevation, passing the turnoff for Patriarch Grove approximately 12 miles from the end of pavement. Park. CLIMB: Hike up the road past the locked gate for 2 miles to the University of California's Barcroft Laboratory at 12,400 feet elevation. From the laboratory, continue following the road N for 0.5 miles as it climbs more steeply now to a flat spot at approximately the 12,800 foot level near an astronomical observatory. From this vantage point White Mountain can be clearly seen as the prominent red and black colored peak to the north, 5 miles distant via the road. Continue hiking the road N as it drops slightly to an expansive plateau and then gently rises to a spot just W of point 13189. Here, follow the road as it turns W and drops sharply some 250 feet to a saddle before continuing its long switchbacking path to the summit. -

N E W S L E T T E R The Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities October 2001 Grounding the Humanities Environment-related Activities at the Townsend Center “Rediscover Earth Now!” During the 1970s and 1980s, burgeoning popular interest in the environment and environmental issues helped fuel the creation of a plethora of new courses and new programs in the natural and the social sciences, as well as in professional schools including Medicine and Law. And yet, while individual humanists joined this movement and have continued to produce valuable work related to the environment (on the Berkeley campus, one thinks of faculty as varied and accomplished as Robert Hass, Kerwin Klein, and Hertha Sweet Wong), the humanities as a whole could and should play a more central role in reexaminations of what we mean by “nature” and how these definitions affect and are affected by crucial environmental initiatives and policies. Because of my own work in the Amazon, the more active presence of the humanities in larger debates about environmental issues is a matter of personal concern. But the role of the humanities in these debates is a much broader intellectual and logistical question, one in which the Townsend Center, at both the institutional and programmatic levels, has begun to play an important part. While study of the environment is only one of the Center’s multiple interests, we have recently taken several important steps to increase our participation in promoting multi-disciplinary approaches that take up the connections between nature and culture. On the Berkeley campus, the Townsend Center has initiated its first formal collaboration with the College of Natural Resources by appointing to our Advisory Board Nancy Peluso, a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management. -

One of a pair whose second set of chicks fledged last spring, the noble falcon and its family stole the hearts of the campus community and people around the world on social media. With renewed confidence we now look to the future. Our comprehensive strategic plan guides us toward fulfilling three aspirational pillars: empowering our students and faculty to change the world; discovering innovative solutions to society’s grand challenges; and embracing the California spirit that is fueled by inclusion, entrepreneurial activity, and diversity of every sort. The strategic plan is already driving changes in the undergraduate experience that will improve the support and academic counseling we provide and put discovery and creative expression at the very center of our students’ academic lives. -

D., Dean, Graduate School December, 2016 i ABSTRACT Changes in landscape composition have the potential to negatively influence animal populations through shifts in dominant plant communities, loss of important forage items, or changes in structural components of habitat. In the western United States, expansion of woodland vegetation into shrub dominated communities is of concern, particularly with regard to animal populations reliant on robust sagebrush and shrub vegetation. Once established, trees can out-compete shrubs and herbaceous plants resulting in declines in abundance and diversity of shrub-forb vegetation, which female mule deer are reliant on during summer months to meet nutritional demands and to provide hiding cover for young.
