And we eliminated UC Berkeley Foundation our $150 million structural deficit: our budget is balanced. Board of Trustees 2018–19 ...... 40 These victories evoke a sense of freedom, an emotion very much reflected on the cover of this Annual Report of Philanthropy: a hardy peregrine falcon, once on the brink of extinction, in flight above its 307-foot home, the Campanile. One of a pair whose second set of chicks fledged last spring, the noble falcon and its family stole the hearts of the campus community and people around the world on social media.

With renewed confidence we now look to the future.

Our comprehensive strategic plan guides us toward fulfilling three aspirational pillars: empowering our students and faculty to change the world; discovering innovative solutions to society’s grand challenges; and embracing the spirit that is fueled by inclusion, entrepreneurial activity, and diversity of every sort. The strategic plan is already driving changes in the undergraduate experience that will improve the support and academic counseling we provide and put discovery and creative expression at the very center of our students’ academic lives.

As the fiscal year ended, so too did our structural deficit. While painful cuts played a role, new revenues — including your generous philanthropic support — accounted for the bulk of our budgetary improvement. Thanks to you, we have had two consecutive, record-breaking years of philanthropy that brought in an impressive total of $1.2 billion, setting the stage for the upcoming launch of Berkeley’s most ambitious fundraising campaign to date.

1 A Message from the Vice Chancellor

Backed by your generous support, Berkeley set an all-time fundraising record. In 2018–19, we raised $635 million, thanks to a record 117,315 gifts from 66,234 donors.

The trends behind the numbers tell the story of shared success across numerous giving levels. I would like to call out just a few highlights.

• Berkeley received nine gifts or pledges of $10 million or more, which accounted for $186.2 million of the total. This was a 57 percent increase in the same giving band over the prior year.

• Some 86 percent of all donors last year gave up to $1,000, numerically accounting for the great base of our support. This is very encouraging and lays a strong foundation for future giving.

• Among alumni, we saw an increase of 16 percent in first-time donors.

• Among Cal parents, we had an increase of 27 percent in first-time donors. A good comparison: 4,654 donors were Cal parents in 2015. By 2019 that number went up to 6,528 donors.

• The campus’s annual day of giving — Big Give — focused on increasing participation this year. We exceeded our goal of 10,000 gifts by nearly 4,000. The number of donors increased 26 percent overall, new donors jumped 46 percent, and new student donors by 26 percent.

The bigger story, of course, goes well beyond the numbers. It’s in the lives of our students and faculty who are immeasurably affected by your support. In so many human and impactful ways, your generosity is helping Berkeley fulfill its public mission.

Thank you for all that you do to ensure that Berkeley remains a university of great distinction committed to the public good.

From landscapes and still lifes to abstract expressions of mood and mind, Hans Hofmann defied category. Although best known for his rectangular color planes, an exhibition at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) last year offered a fresh look at his entire career. It also marked BAMPFA’s long history with the artist, who in 1963 donated nearly 50 paintings and substantial money toward realizing the university’s first art museum. Pictured: Summer Bliss, 1960.

16 17 During Berkeley’s fifth Big Give, a 24-hour campaign, alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, and friends from all over the globe showed their blue-and-gold spirit by helping us raise more than 13,900 gifts totaling over $4.1 million. Exceeding the goal of 10,000 gifts inspired the UC Berkeley Foundation Board of Trustees to give more than $130,000 to students’ basic needs. Photo by Keegan Houser.

The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life is now the permanent home of some 30,000 prints, negatives, audio and video recordings, and other works by acclaimed Russian-American photographer Roman Vishniac. Best known for his portrayals of Jewish life in pre-Holocaust Eastern , Vishniac was also a relentless inventor of photographic styles and techniques. Mara Vishniac Schiff Kohn, his daughter (see page 33), donated the collection to Berkeley shortly before her death. 18 19 In no small sense, the quality of our faculty is the quality of our university. Ensuring their continued greatness is one focus of the Chancellor’s Impact Fund, which provides current-use funds to help Chancellor Carol Christ address her highest priorities. One top need is recruiting and nurturing new faculty during the most creative phases of their careers — an investment in novel research and in Berkeley’s future. 20 21 Berkeley’s new Basic Needs Center, a one-stop shop for students with food, housing, and financial challenges, opened in February. The first of its kind in the UC system and nationwide, the center also connects students with local agencies and provides case management support. Ensuring that no student goes unserved, the center is expected to assist up to 6,000 students its first year. Joining a select group of universities in the world with similar endowed faculty chairs, Berkeley announced in May the creation of the Helen Diller Family Chair in Israel Studies — its first in the field. Made possible by a $5 million grant from the Helen Diller Foundation, the chair will endow courses, research, and programs of the Berkeley Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies. Ron Hassner (right), the institute’s faculty co-director and an international relations expert on the relationship between religion and conflict, will hold the chair. “The foundation recognized the urgency of teaching Israel in an even-handed and professional manner on the Berkeley campus and sprang into action,” says Hassner. 22 23 Since Jennifer Doudna (pictured), now executive director of the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), and her international team first published research in 2012 about CRISPR-Cas9 — a bacterial immune system that was engineered to become a powerful gene editing tool — a global research revolution has begun. The technology holds profound potential for curing human disease, ending hunger, and protecting the environment. Berkeley’s efforts are attracting new philanthropic support: One recent gift from Joe and Tayler Lonsdale is boosting an emerging IGI program aimed at informing and influencing public policies around the ethics of rewriting DNA. For students who need more privacy, including those who are transgender, non-binary, or have disabilities or body image issues, a welcoming new facility opened last fall. It is the first large-scale collegiate universal locker room in California and one of only a handful in the nation. Remarkably, it is being paid for by students, who in 2015 voted to impose an annual fee upon themselves to support innovative, new mind-body services like this one. Photo by Brittany Hosea-Small.

In 1995, the late F. Warren ’55 and Chris Hellman established the Hellman Fellows Program to help early-career faculty move their research forward. To honor their parents’ legacy, Frances Hellman, dean of mathematical and physical sciences, and her three siblings — Patricia Hellman Gibbs, Marco ’83, and Judith ’84 — awarded Berkeley a $20 million matching grant to help fund the Society of Hellman Fellows in perpetuity. Once fully endowed, the society will double the number of fellowships awarded annually to 32. “The impact of their generosity cannot be overstated,” says Chancellor Carol Christ. “Faculty they supported two decades ago are today changing the world with their discoveries.” Photo by Michael Riley.

David Blackwell Hall, Berkeley’s newest residence hall, opened last fall. The living space for more than 700 students is named for the late David Blackwell, a renowned statistician who was the first black professor to receive tenure at Berkeley. The hall is an important step toward addressing one of our biggest challenges — expanding access to safe, affordable, convenient housing, with the goal of doubling the number of beds by 2028.
