REUNION OF THE AGES 2020 NEWSLETTER Our Mission is to preserve, honor and celebrate the history and heritage of former black educational institutions in the Morristown-Hamblen County area in conjunction with present and future needs of the community. COVID 19 PANDEMIC has dictated numerous changes in our lives; therefore the Reunion of the Ages Board of Directors decided to cancel and postpone the following events: 2020 Biennial Reunion (CANCELLED) ............ Rescheduled July 22-25, 2021 2020 Gospel Fest Scholarship Fundraiser ........................... POSTPONED 2020 Scholarships .................................................................. POSTPONED Our school systems closed in March and will remain closed for this school year. Our normal communication system is no longer adequate for our graduates or our current policies. We are waiting to confirm the “New Norm” from educators, churches, and partnerships. Internet/Online classes due to social distancing might be in fact the New Norm! Our Board will assess the situation and determine what we need to do. We will review/ evaluate essential support once we have sufficient information and guidance. We are living in unprecedented and critical challenges of the Coronavirus. We realize that throughout this period of unrest and uncertainty, it is critical for you to focus on your family, as well as your well-being. Our hearts and thoughts go out to the people who have been affected by this pandemic event. COM 2020 SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE On behalf of the Scholarship Committee of the Reunion of the Ages, we want to extend our gratitude and appreciation to all of those who have pledged or contributed with monetary donations to the Scholarship Fund. Since 2003, we proudly continue our educational legacy through the five scholarship programs. Within 17 years Reunion of the Ages has awarded $58,650.00 to 128 recipients. Additional Award categories include Youth Leadership, WSCC, Oversees Basketball Camp, Project Grad, Relay for Life, Student Ambassador Program and the Sports Tech Basketball Camp. Nichols Scholarship Fund has been The Melissa McCray-Dukes Scholarship Fund was awarded annually since 2003. It was named in honor established in 2019. William “Sam” Braziel The ROTA Scholarship honoring William "Sam" Alma H. Francis “Mae West” Pressley The Francis "Mae West" Pressley Scholarship was entrusted to the Reunion of the Ages in 2016 honoring a devoted supporter of the organization. The scholarship was established in loving memory by her devoted husband, William "Duck" Pressley and best friend, Cassandra "Sunshine" Davis. Mrs. Pressley went to Morristown College , where she attained her Associates of Arts Degree as well as being named Valedictorian of the Class of 1978 and to Who's Who in American Junior Colleges. Carlton Brown, Clifton Baldwin, Wilbur Hendricks, Jr., Ian Ferguson HERITAGE PARK (the site of the former Morristown College) On November 16, 2019, a Grand Opening Celebration was given by the City of Morristown at Heritage Park, the former site of Morristown College honoring the history of the college. For over a century, the college played a significant role in our community and for each of its alumni. It was one of the only two higher-educational institutions for African Americans in East Tennessee prior to the Civil Rights movement. It stood as a landmark in Morristown until it was closed in 1994. Heritage Park now sits as a remembrance of the college and provides recreational space for generations to come. Aerial Image of the new Heritage Park The Heritage Park colonnades The Park features more than 50 acres of wide green spaces for visitors to enjoy. The Great Lawn, which rests at the highest point on the former baseball field, is expected to host other types of special events, like music concerts and community gatherings. The courtyard near the Colonnade will be a great place for movies at the park and special events like weddings. The other two divisions of the park are the Jeff Horner, Bill Thompson and Hamblen educational area and the replica of the Great Colonnade that once County Sheriff Esco Jarnagin with the return of connected two of the college buildings. the Morristown College bell.
