The Presence of the Absent: Therapy with Families and Their Ghosts Downloaded by [New York University] at 12:57 13 August 2016 The Presence of the Absent Where live our most cherished (or painful) memories? Where are lodged those whom we loved (or dreaded) after they have departed? They inhabit, at least for a while, in a gray zone located between our self and our world, sometimes as internal reminiscences sometimes as strikingly vivid images detected and inter- acted by individuals and occasionally by whole collectives, as tenuous or as solid presences. This book familiarizes us with six examples of individuals and families in therapy who live and interact with the presence of their absent, pivotal people in their lives who either died or disappeared, but are still there. It familiarizes us with their plight in a tender, compassionate style, describing in detail interviews and therapeutic transformations and, in several cases, follow-ups as well as echoes of those processes. It teaches us to respect those presences as well as how to help families and individuals treasure them, and in many cases to let them go. Written in a vivid, intense language, The Presence of the Absent offers a marvelous insight into these processes that may prove transformative for the therapist (both family and individually oriented), as well as enlightening to the general public. In doing so they taught me many things about life, suffering, rebuilding, hope and joy, about my fallibility while occasionally validating my capacity to help them to introduce changes in their Acknowledgments ix lives. This recursive process of learning and helping to learn, of changing and helping to change, has been and is for me an ever-present source of nourishment. To them, and to many other colleagues and friends with whom I shared and share community, my love and my debt. I wish also to express my deep appreciation for colleagues and friends who at different moments provided me with constructive suggestions in the process of writing this book. Special thanks are due to my beloved wife and personal and intellectual companion, Sara Cobb, PhD, for her solid stimulation and warm sup- port and for the many ideas conveyed in many conversations and in her admirable book Speaking of Violence (Cobb, 2013); to my admired senior colleague, creative pioneer and generous friend Salvador Minuchin for his kind prologue and for so much more; to my friend Saul Malozowski, MD for his detailed review and feedback of this book while in progress; and, of course, to the late Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Nobel Prize of Literature, who brought forth magic realism and validat- ing that dimension through the esthetic door, thus bringing it out of the closet of our private if not secret world into the light of our explicit daily experiences.

The treatment of a patient who was referred due to hallucinations reveals a world of “magic realism” that is far from infrequent in elderly people with a small and dwindling social network –especially if coming from cultures where the boundaries between the inner and the outer world world are fuzzy. Laughing at Our Inadequacies: Contemporary Cartoonish Painting, Internet Culture and the Tragicomic Character Amber Boardman A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Art and Design Faculty of Art and Design October 2018 Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname Boardman Given Name Amber Degree PhD Faculty Art and Design School Art and Design Thesis Title Laughing at Our Inadequacies: Contemporary Cartoonish Painting, Internet Culture and the Tragicomic Character Abstract This practice-based project examines ‘cartoonish painting’, an emerging trend of contemporary figurative painting which draws on links between cartoons, humour, narrative, character and bodily transformation. In my practice, cartoonish painting depicts and comments on the endless desire to transform body and self as promoted by Internet culture and social media. This thesis argues that the social media driven desire for self-improvement—bodily alteration and transformations of the self—creates a tragicomic effect that unfolds through the devices of narrative and character. I examine the still influential, Romantic theory of character developed by William James. James articulated well-rounded characters evolve over time through a series of identifications with external others. This thesis proposes that James’s formulations about character retain currency, as people identify with depictions of idealised bodies, high-performing and socially sanctioned selves disseminated through the Internet. This thesis argues, however, that this aspirational selfhood and identifying with idealised others creates feelings of inadequacy. The ideology of a striving, perfected self in search of the ‘American Dream’ will be analysed through Henri Bergson’s theory of the comic. Bergson argued that the failure of machine-like pursuits uncontrolled by consciousness can be manifested through comic depictions of the human body.

They were a great group, he said, no question. The man who had famously and perfectly described Keith Richards as “elegantly wasted” lounged in a plume of smoke. Then he went one step too far. In years to come, he prophesied, the Smiths would be considered the end of the line - the last great British rock group. Just as he spoke, in an abandoned warehouse in Manchester, the Stone Roses were about to take the stage. Very soon, they would render Morrissey’s Manchester a piece of history: the NHS specs, the photo op under the Strangeways road sign, the canalside walks of A Taste of Honey - all would be timelocked in the mid-80s. The Stone Roses turned the contrast up and caused a pop revolution. Kent’s quote was quickly forgotten. For some time, I’ve wanted to write a history of modern pop, the period that began with rock’n'roll. I have had a few dozen conversations over cold drinks about start points, end points, teen culture, formats, haircuts, the importance of slang in lyrics, the involvement of the military-industrial complex.

The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame.

Ashlee Simpson Ross (previously Ashlee Nicole Simpson and, during her first marriage, Simpson-Wentz), born October 3, 1984 in Waco Texas, is an actress and singer (2001–present) and also younger sister to Jessica Simpson. Early in her career, she scored hits with the songs "Pieces Of Me" and "Boyfriend". To much of the world, however, she is known for the infamous Saturday Night Live performance in October 2004 where she was caught lip- synching in front of millions of people at home and then proceeded to do a hoe-down for some bizarre reason, followed by a disastrous off-key performance at the 2005 Orange Bowl in which she was booed off stage. She is also an actress, with her best-known role being Violet Foster in the Melrose Place remake. She is was married to Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz and has a son named Bronx Mowgli.
