There are two ways a researcher can find a file: by citation or by subject matter. By Citation A typical citation to the C.O. Palestine Original Corres­ pondence is CO 733/221/97168. "CO" is the abbreviation for Colonial Office; 733 is the class number for Palestine; 221 is the volume number in which the file is contained; and 97168 is the file number. The following steps will make reference to this citation. Step 1. Volumes are numbered consecutively throughout the 733 class. Find Volume 221 in the Guide. Step 2. Files within volumes appear in numerical order, although they are not always consecutive. Find File 97168 by checking down the File Number column under Volume 221. Step 3. Note the year and reel number for this file. Reels are numbered consecutively for each year. File 97168 appears on Reel 13 of the year 1932. Step 4. Note the number of folios preceding File 97168. This gives the researcher an idea of how far into Volume 221 he or she must go to reach the desired file. In this case, 34 folios precede File 97168. The researcher now has all the information necessary to locate the file in the microfilm. It appears on Reel 13 of year 1932, 34 folios into Volume 221. By Subject To find a file on a particular subject, read down the Subject columns until that subject appears. Then use the four finding steps given before to locate that file in the microfilm. Its elements are: 1--Year in which the material was filed. 2--Country or area to which the file refers. All Class 733 material refers to Palestine. 3--File number. These run numerically but not always consecu­ tively throughout Class 733, due to certain files having been "destroyed under statute" by the Colonial Office. 4--Class number. 5--Volume number. These run consecutively throughout Class 733. Volumes contain varying numbers of files, depending on file lengths. 6--Item number. This number refers to the position of the file within its volume. In this case, the file is the first one in the volume. Not all files were assigned item numbers; they are not necessary for file location, and the Scholarly Resources Guide does not use them. 7--Subject of the file. 8--Citations of immediately previous and subsequent files on the same topic. If the citation has no prefix, it refers to a Class 733 file; prefixes indicate files from other classes or offices.     THE ISRAEL/PALESTINE QUESTION The Israel/Palestine Question assimilates diverse interpretations of the origins of the Middle East conflict with emphasis on the fight for Palestine and its religious and political roots. Drawing largely on scholarly debates in Israel during the last two decades, which have become known as ‘historical revisionism’, the collection presents the most recent developments in the historiography of the Arab-Israeli conflict and a critical reassessment of Israel’s past.     From the Shavei Tzion Archives: Transportation and Transport February, 2015 Judith Temime On April 21, 1938, one week after the founding of our moshav, the "Juedische Rundschau", the official newspaper of the German Zionist Federation, wrote excitedly: "A new place on the map of Palestine, the light of a new projector in the night skies of Palestine, a new name in the mouths of the Jews of Palestine and the Diaspora. Out of Rexingen, Schawei Zion has risen…the people of Rexingen have settled on their land." Paving the entry road in Shavei Tzion, spring 1938. "Davar", on April 14, 1938, only one day after the tower and stockade encampment was built here on the first day of settlement, reported that "the settlers went out this morning to pave the road…one kilometer long, it will link the new settlement with the Acre-Beirut road". In mining sand from our seafront for use in construction, the settlers worked alongside laborers from "Even v'Seed" and in paving the road they worked with laborers from "Solel Boneh" so that from the very inception of the moshav, members earned wages to support the settlement. At the beginning of May in 1938, Dr. Manfred Scheuer, the British Mandate-appointed "mukhtar" (headman) of the new, little settlement wrote in his journal: "Today, Fredy Weil and Zev Berlinger began to learn how to lay stones in paving the road. Fredy had the opportunity of acquiring the skill during his six weeks in a concentration camp and (he) said yesterday that a man should be able to lay 60 square meters and earn a high wage.

The Israel travel guide you are reading is a greatly expanded version of one I first prepared for an American friend some two decades ago. In it, I have tried to share my experiences and knowledge of Israel based on a lifetime of study and fifteen visits to the country, most recently in May 2016. I enjoy independent travel, and this guide was written primarily with such travelers in mind, though I hope the information will be helpful to those on group tours as well. As an American, I have produced a guide that, no doubt, reflects that identify and experience. I hope my readers from other countries will forgive that, and still find useful information to help plan their trips. I am not in the travel industry. Rather, I am a labor lawyer who loves Israel passionately and wants to encourage others to travel there and experience this wonderful land. My first visit was in November 1988, and I caught the bug; thus I started visiting every other year or so thereafter, except for 2000-2004, the truly terrible years of the second Palestinian uprising and the terror bombings in Israel cities. Now, with partial retirement, I am going every year (God willing!). Even with the mostly peaceful conditions prevailing since then, some friends still asked, “are you sure you want to go back to Israel?” Of course, recent tensions in Jerusalem, with a wave of stabbing attacks on Israelis, have further increased those anxieties, even for me to some degree.
