  • MARY Christmas – Touchpoint for December 16, 2020
MARY Christmas – TouchPoint for December 16, 2020 Luke 1:26-38 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

DAVID FOSTER “I believe that everyone gets three rounds in their life,” says musician, songwriter, composer, arranger, producer, and recording artist David Foster. “For me, two are completed and I’m on to Round Three. I think you have to change it up every round. My mantra is retreat and attack in another direction, which I’ve done twice. Now I'm going to do it again.” Foster’s first round was as a studio musician, arranger, and recording artist. His second round was becoming one of the most successful songwriters and record producers in history — shepherding albums that have collectively sold in the hundreds of millions. This period of his four-decade career also found him creating The David Foster Foundation and volunteering his time and talent to over 400 charities, as well as becoming a household name as a performer throughout Asia where he tours annually. For his third round, Foster is gearing up to take on Broadway with several projects. These include writing the music for a new musical about the iconic, animated character Betty Boop, which will be directed by Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell. He is writing the music for a musical based on the Amy Bloom novel and New York Times bestseller Lucky Us, directed by Tony Award-nominee Sheryl Kaller. Foster is also developing a scripted narrative one-man show based on the story of his career that he will perform himself. And finally, he is gearing up to write an original show with Oscar-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri that Foster describes as “a cross between The Bodyguard and The Phantom of the Opera.” As one of the most illustrious composers of our time, Foster’s skill set of creating hits, writing indelible melodies, and building dramatic moments, has primed him for this third round.

  • The Music of Donny Hathaway Everything Is Everything Donny Hathaway, 1970
SUMPTUOUS SOUL: THE MUSIC OF DONNY HATHAWAY EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING DONNY HATHAWAY, 1970 Keisha Hicks A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2014 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Rebecca Mancuso, Graduate Faculty Representative Ellen Berry Radhika Gajjala © 2014 Keisha Hicks All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor The song “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway is played only once a year during the holiday season. His presence is so strong during the holidays for African Americans because he is one of the distinctive cultural markers of the season. The question at hand is why is he relegated to the Christmas season but what about the rest of the year. In 2010, National Public Radio (NPR) created the series 50 Great Voices as a way to expose NPR listeners to artists who were not at the forefront of public consciousness. On June 26, 2010 Donny Hathaway debuted as the “Neglected Heart of Soul” but does “neglected” hold up. I believe “neglected” becomes situational depending on who is doing the remembering. The objective of my dissertation is to locate Donny Hathaway as a central figure in 1970s Soul music, to understand his growing influence over contemporary artists, and his musical legacy. I used Stuart Hall’s “representation” as my overarching theoretical framework. I wanted a theory that would be fluid enough to be relevant in the different phases of Donny Hathaway’s musical career. By using representation I was able to identify and understand the musical influences on Donny Hathaway.

  • 1 December 20, 2015 AM Pastor Ken Hepner “Have a Mary Christmas
December 20, 2015 AM Pastor Ken Hepner “Have a Mary Christmas” Luke 1:26 – 38 Introduction: This Christmas Sunday morning, I invite you to take some time to reflect with me things that really matter in life. I want to begin by looking at what the shepherds heard the angels say and then sing to them, Luke 2:8 – 14. Their message was a word about Loving people deeply and Peace on Earth, good will toward humankind. What culture has done with its message about loving others and peace in our relationships is really remarkable. We are all able to sit here this morning completely at ease in this wondrous season of joy, peace, giving, and good will toward humankind. The reason we feel so rested and inwardly refreshed is that we have spent our last number of days in quiet, peaceful, and restful enjoyment of life. We are so grateful for the stress free lifestyle we are living. The message the angels sang to the shepherds abiding in the fields watching their flocks was “Peace on earth, good will toward men.” What we have done with this spiritual message, of peace on earth in and through the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, is quite often a pretty far cry from what the angels had in mind as they sang. Our culture’s message blares at every one of our senses, with astounding regularity. The message is “Tis the season to be jolly, to express joy through getting, to be festive and indulge ourselves at parties.” Christmas is about shopping so that, on Friday as our children open our presents to them, the message of peace on earth through what Jesus has come to do for us all will be loudly proclaimed by our celebration.

  • Each Year, Around This Time, Holiday Albums Fill the Shelves of Record Stores and Cyber Music Markets
Each year, around this time, holiday albums fill the shelves of record stores and cyber music markets. You can always find classic Christmas albums from artists like Loretta Lynn and Nat King Cole. But every year also brings new holiday albums from current industry stars. Today we play some of 2013’s offerings. “A Mary Christmas” is the first holiday release from Mary J. Blige. She performs twelve popular songs, including the jazzy version of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Mary J. Blige shares the holiday warmth with guest artists as well. Here she performs “When You Wish Upon A Star” with one of music’s biggest stars: Barbra Streisand. The singer Jewel released the holiday album “Joy” in 1999. It was successful, selling over a million copies. She says her new one, “Let It Snow,” has the same spirit as the first. She wrote two new songs for the album. She also includes versions of old songs like “Silver Bells” and “Sleigh Ride.” And, country star Vince Gill plays electric guitar on “White Christmas.” One surprising performance is of the title song. Jewel rock and rolls “Let It Snow” more than you might expect. 1 learningenglish.voanews.com | Voice of America | Dec. 20, 2013 Johnny Mathis is back with his first holiday collection in years. It is called “Sending You A Little Christmas.” The 78-year-old artist sings with several special guests on the album including Susan Boyle, Billy Joel and Gloria Estefan. But one song is a record breaker in Mathis’ career. He gets on Billboard Magazine’s Adult Contemporary chart for the 50th time with the album’s title track.
