By Holly Michael hristmas is almost here! While making preparations and wrapping gifts, sometimes it’s difficult to focus on our best Christmas gift ever; Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Through his passion, death, and resurrection, we have gained eternal life. What a gift! So, along with our decorations and outward expressions of our love for Jesus, it’s good to prepare ourselves inwardly Cthrough reading Scripture and inspirational books. In this article, you’ll find Scripture readings along with excerpts and short stories from inspirational books to enjoy during the Holy season and beyond. Enjoy the readings, however your time allows. THE HOLY BIBLE On the second Sunday in Advent, Holy Scripture Sunday, the collect was, Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Sav- iour Jesus Christ. Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. Digesting The Word will benefit us more than Christmas sweets (minus the calories), but like the variety of Christmas treats, there’s a lot of Scriptures in the Holy Bible. Which should we read? While the greatest Christmas readings are the infancy narratives from Luke 2 and Matthew 1, on Scripture Sunday, I was challenged to open my Bible to Romans. Deacon Alfred Sturges offered this challenge to read Romans, a chapter a day, each day--16 chapters to Christmas. Why Romans? Deacon Alfred explained that because Paul’s letter to the Romans inspired St. Augustine’s conversion. St. Augustine wrote about that conversion experience in St. Augustine’s Confes- sions. (I’ll get to this book in the next section). So, I began reading, posting the chapter on my blog, and offering a small reflection each day. Not only was St. Augustine con- verted years ago, a non-Christian woman, one of my blog followers, also converted. At first, she challenged some of Paul’s teachings in Romans 1, but by Romans 5, according to her messages to me, she accepted Christ with a Christian prayer I offered at the end of the posting. Maybe there were others that led her toward accepting Christ, but certainly Deacon Alfred started something. Here’s my blog post from Chapter 5: PEACE AND HOPE: Romans Chapter 5 Thanks for continuing with me on Deacon Alfred’s challenge to read a chapter a day of Romans until Christmas. If you’re just here for this one chapter, that’s cool, too. Here we go: Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.

  • MARY Christmas – Touchpoint for December 16, 2020
MARY Christmas – TouchPoint for December 16, 2020 Luke 1:26-38 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

After a discussion of how Beckett’s own practice might be seen as intermedial, the essay analyses the 1996 American Repertory Company programme Beckett Trio, a staging of three of Beckett’s television plays which incorporated live camera projected onto a large screen in a television studio. The second case study analyses Company SJ’s 2014 stage adaptation of a selection of Beckett’s prose texts, Fizzles, in a historic site-specific location in inner city Dublin, which incorporated projected sequences previously filmed in a different location.

...The World According to Samuel Beckett ... Samuel Beckett was a poet, critic, novelist, short fction writer, critic, translator, and dramatist who wrote both in French and English. Classes will focus on his dramatic work via three full length and four short plays. Plays will be considered in reverse chronological order. Beckett’s short plays (Catastrophe, Not I, Footfalls, Play) will be shown in their entirety during classes 1, 2, and 3. Since only excerpts from Happy Days, Endgame, and Waiting for Godot, can be shown (in classes 4, 5, and 6) students are encouraged to read those plays beforehand. The Complete Dramatic Works of Samuel Beckett is available both in paperback and on Kindle and full performances of his long plays are available on YouTube. Also recommended: James Knowlson’s biography of Samuel Beckett, Samuel Beckett: 1906 -1989 Damned to Fame, Bloomsbury, 2014 (available in paperback and on Kindle). Class 1: Introduction to Beckett’s life, works, aesthetics and the nature of his revolutionary drama. Since all of the plays viewed in class were converted from stage to flm the differences between the two genres will be noted and opposing views by flm director Anthony Minghella and reviewer Tom McGurk considered. Class will view Catastrophe, a six minute flm version of Beckett’s play. Directed by David Mamet with Harold Pinter and John Gielgud in leading roles, this brief but complex work is perfect for introducing Beckett’s stage, characters, and dramatic strategy. Catastrophe was written in 1982 in support of Czech dissident Vaclav Havel and political versus universal applications will be considered.

  • Filmography V6.Indd
a filmography Foreword by The Irish Film Institute For over 60 years, the Irish Film Institute has been dedicated to the promotion of film culture in Ireland and therefore is proud to present this filmography of Samuel Beckett’s work. Beckett remains one of Ireland’s most important and influential artists and Samuel Beckett – A Filmography provides a snapshot of the worldwide reach and enduring nature of his creativity. As part of the Beckett centenary celebrations held in April 2006, the Irish Film Institute organised a diverse programme of films relating to the work of Beckett, including a tour of the line-up to cinemas around the country. Prior to this, the Irish Film Institute provided the unique opportunity to view all 19 films in the ‘Beckett on Film’ series by screening the entire selection in February 2001. This filmography provides the perfect accompaniment to these previous programmes and it illustrates that Beckett’s work will continue to be adapted for film and television worldwide for years to come. Photograph by Richard Avedon Samuel Beckett – A Filmography was made possible though the kind support of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism and the Beckett Centenary Council and Festival Committee. Mark Mulqueen Director, The Irish Film Institute An Introduction Compiling a filmography of Beckett’s work is both a challenging and daunting prospect. It was important, from the outset, to set some parameters for this filmography. Therefore, to this end, I decided to focus on the key area of direct adaptations of Beckett’s work filmed for cinema or television.

  • Biography Hit Man
DAVID FOSTER “I believe that everyone gets three rounds in their life,” says musician, songwriter, composer, arranger, producer, and recording artist David Foster. “For me, two are completed and I’m on to Round Three. I think you have to change it up every round. My mantra is retreat and attack in another direction, which I’ve done twice. Now I'm going to do it again.” Foster’s first round was as a studio musician, arranger, and recording artist. His second round was becoming one of the most successful songwriters and record producers in history — shepherding albums that have collectively sold in the hundreds of millions. This period of his four-decade career also found him creating The David Foster Foundation and volunteering his time and talent to over 400 charities, as well as becoming a household name as a performer throughout Asia where he tours annually. For his third round, Foster is gearing up to take on Broadway with several projects. These include writing the music for a new musical about the iconic, animated character Betty Boop, which will be directed by Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell. He is writing the music for a musical based on the Amy Bloom novel and New York Times bestseller Lucky Us, directed by Tony Award-nominee Sheryl Kaller. Foster is also developing a scripted narrative one-man show based on the story of his career that he will perform himself. And finally, he is gearing up to write an original show with Oscar-nominated actor Chazz Palminteri that Foster describes as “a cross between The Bodyguard and The Phantom of the Opera.” As one of the most illustrious composers of our time, Foster’s skill set of creating hits, writing indelible melodies, and building dramatic moments, has primed him for this third round.
