The analyst examined those organized crime syndicates that direct their criminal activities at the United States, namely Mexican narcotics trafficking and human smuggling networks, as well as a range of smaller organizations that specialize in trans-border crime. The presence in Mexico of transnational criminal organizations, such as Russian and Asian organized crime, was also examined. In order to assess the extent of terrorist activity in Mexico, several of the country’s domestic guerrilla groups, as well as foreign terrorist organizations believed to have a presence in Mexico, are described. The report extensively cites from Spanish-language print media sources that contain coverage of criminal and terrorist organizations and their activities in Mexico. -

1 La Frontera- The U.S. Border Reflected in the Cinematic Lens David R. Maciel1 Introduction The U.S.-Mexico border/la frontera has the distinction of being the only place in the world where a highly developed country and a developing one meet and interact.2 This is an area of historical conflict, convergence, conflict, dependency, and interdependency, all types of transboundary links, as well as a society of astounding complexity and an evolving and extraordinarily rich culture. Distinct border styles of music, literature, art, media, and certainly visual practices have flourished in the region. Several of the most important cultural and artistic-oriented institutions, such as universities, research institutes, community centers, and museums are found in the border states of both countries. Beginning in the late 19th century and all the way to the present certain journalists, writers and visual artists have presented a distorted vision of the U.S. - Mexican border. The borderlands have been portrayed mostly as a lawless, rugged, and perilous area populated by settlers who sought a new life in the last frontier, but also criminals and crime fighters whose deeds became legendary. Being Edward James Olmos: Culture Clash and the Portrayal of Chicano Masculinity Abstract This paper analyzes how Culture Clash problematizes Chicano masculinity through the manipulation of two iconic Chicano characters originally popularized by two films starring dwarE d James Olmos - the pachuco from Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit (1981) and the portrayal of real-life math teacher Jaime Escalante in Stand and Deliver (1988). In “Stand and Deliver Pizza” (from A Bowl of Beings, 1992), Culture Clash tries to introduce new Chicano characters that can be read as masculine, and who at the same time, display alternative behaviors and characteristics, including homosexual desire. The three characters in “Stand and Deliver Pizza” represent stock icons of Chicano masculinity. -

Chicano Resistance In The Southwest Alfred Porras, Jr. INTRODUCTION There are two dimensions of racism, economic and cultural, as indicated by Christine E. Sleeter (1). The first dimension involves “violent conquest, accompanied by the construction of a belief system that the conquering group is culturally and intellectually superior to the group it has conquered.” The second dimension involves ongoing attempts by the colonizing society to consolidate and stabilize control over the land and people, and to incorporate the people into the labor force in subordinate positions. At the cultural level, the colonizing group proclaims the superiority of its social system. During times of rebellion or instability, the dominant society reinforces its dominance through violence, and through assault on the culture, language, religion, or moral fiber of the subordinate group. (2) Based on this definition of racism I begin my study of Chicano resistance in the “American” Southwest, since Sleeter’s first dimension is clearly present in the United States military takeover “with forcible measures to overturn Mexican land-ownership claims and to undermine Mexican culture, the Spanish language, and the Catholic religion."(3) This curriculum unit concerning conflict and resolution has the purpose to dispel the myth of the sleeping giant or the idea that the Mexican American people are unaware of their political potential. This curriculum unit will address three basic questions. What is conflict and resistance? What are the roots of conflict? What are the different modes of resistance? According to Robert J. Rosenbaum, the history of the Mexican-American War of the mid-1800's indicates that it was a quick war and no real resistance occurred during the take over of Mexican land and during the imposition of dominance by the U.S. -

Task- Read the article & answer the analysis questions The Battle of Fort Sumter Fort Sumter by Unknown The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the American Civil War and signaled the start of the war. It took place over two days from April 12–13, 1861. Where is Fort Sumter? Fort Sumter is on an island in South Carolina not far from Charleston. Its main purpose was to guard Charleston Harbor. Who were the leaders in the battle? The main commander from the North was Major Robert Anderson. Even though he lost the Battle of Fort Sumter he became a national hero following the battle. He was even promoted to Brigadier General. The leader of the Southern forces was General P. T. Beauregard. General Beauregard was actually a student of Major Anderson's at the army school of West Point. Leading Up to the Battle The situation around Fort Sumter had become increasingly tense in the previous months. It began with South Carolina seceding from the Union and escalated with the formation of the Confederacy and the Confederate Army. The leader of the Confederate Army, General P.T. Beauregard, began building up his forces around the fort in Charleston Harbor. Major Anderson, the leader of the Union forces in Charleston, moved his men from Fort Moultrie to the more fortified island fort, Fort Sumter. However, because he was surrounded by the Confederate Army, he began to run out of food and fuel and needed supplies. The Confederation knew this and they were hoping that Major Anderson and his soldiers would leave South Carolina without a fight. -

Chapter #20: Girding for War: The North and the South – Big Picture Themes 1. After Ft. Sumter started the war, keeping the border states were Abe’s top concern. These were slave states that hadn’t left the nation. Throughout the war, Abe would make concessions to “keep them happy.” The border states never left. 2. All along the South felt that England would help them. The idea was that King Cotton’s dominance would force the English into helping the Southerners. This never happened, largely because Uncle Tom’s Cabin had convinced the English people of slavery’s horrors. 3. The North had the advantage in almost every category: population, industry, money, navy. 4. Both sides turned to a draft, the nation’s first. The draft was very unpopular and many riots broke out. IDENTIFICATIONS: Election of 1860 set the stage for the Civil War. The nation had been divided throughout most of the 1850s on questions of expanding slavery and the rights of slave owners. In 1860, this issue finally came to a head, split the political system into four parties. The Democratic Party broke into Northern and Southern factions, and a new Constitutional Union Party appeared, The Republican Party was dominant in the North and won the electoral votes to put Abraham Lincoln in the White House with very little support from the South. The Southern response was declarations of secession by South Carolina and six other southern states, but secession was rejected as illegal by outgoing President James Buchanan and President-elect Lincoln. Eight other southern states did not secede before the Battle of Fort Sumter. -
