Note to the Secretary-General C Travel to New Delhi, Colombo and Kuala Lumpur - October 2003
1. In early August you had approved the itinerary (attached) for Colombo, New Delhi and Kuala Lumpur, from 8 to 17 October. Your approval of the itinerary was based on the understanding ASSES that we would try and look for better flights from Delhi to Kuala Lumpur. We now have a better option, through Singapore (please see attached revised itinerary).
2. Despite our efforts to find better flights and connections from New York to Colombo, the only option is through London, requiring two consecutive overnight flights. It is an arduous trip that has you and Mrs. Annan departing New York at 11 pm on Wednesday 8 October and arriving in Colombo at 6 am on Friday 10 October.
3. The only way to ease this very difficult trip would be to depart New York on Tuesday 7 October. You have a drop in scheduled at the USCIB dinner to honour Chad Holliday that evening, but an evening departure on this date would allow you and Mrs. Annan to : a) spend 24 hours in London before travelling on to Colombo or b) to travel straight through (New York-London-Colombo) but have an extra day of rest in Colombo (Thursday 9 October added to Friday 10 October) before the Official Visit on Saturday 11 October.
4. This earlier departure will require a cancellation of both the luncheon for African- American Civil Society CEO leaders (which has been cancelled once before) and the UNA/USA Global Leadership Award Dinner on 8 October.
5. As the World AIDS Campaign Concert at Madison Square Gardens on Saturday 18, October has been cancelled, we suggest that you break up your return flight to New York, and spend the night in London on Friday 17 October.
