In the Icchā,nagala Sutta (S 54.11), breath meditation is declared to be ―the noble abode, the perfect abode, the Tathagata‘s abode,‖1 because during the rains-retreat, the Buddha ―most- ly dwells in the concentration by mindfulness of breathing.‖2 The chief text of ―the mindfulness of in-and- out breathing‖ (nâpna,sati) is of course the Ānâpāna,sati Sutta (the discourse on the mindfulness of the in-and-out-breathing) found in the Majjhima Nikya (M 118/3:77-88). There are also four brief versions of the breath meditation (S 54.13-16) [1.2]. The Madhyama Āgama of the Sarvâstivda does not have any such sutta, but there is an isolated text in the Chinese Madhyama Āgama.3 The Pli Ānâpāna,sati Sutta is an exposition of the 16 steps of breath meditation in four tetrads [§§15-22] and the relationship of tetrads to the four focuses of mindfulness [§§23-28], the seven awakening-factors [§§29-40] and spiritual liberation [§§41-43]. The sixteen steps are found as a separate set in the Sarvâstivda Madhyama and Sayukta.4 The inspiring sutta prologue takes up about a quarter of the unabridged sutta.     Impressions from the 2015 Sakyadhita International Conference Figure 1 Borobudur at Sunrise They came in robes and in street clothes, with perfectly coiffed hair and with shaved heads, in sandals, in boots, and in high heels. They came from all over the world, on wings, on wheels, by foot. They came, the Buddhists, the Muslims, the Hindus, and the Christians, and some who have set aside all religion. They came, over 1,000 of them, in search of inspiration. And that is what they found. The 2015 Sakyadhita Conference is the first I have attended, though it has been offered for nearly 30 years now. Organized by an ordained woman who practices Tibetan Buddhism and teaches at the University of California in San Diego, the Venerable Karma Lekshe Tsomo, this conference for Buddhist women was centered on the theme of compassion and social justice. It is supported by Venerable Lekshe, other nuns and monks, and dozens of women and men volunteers who gain nothing but the satisfaction of knowing that they have helped so many. This year's conference was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia where the weather was warm and damp, so that the proceedings could be held entirely outdoors under large tents and verandas. It brought together monastics, scholars, lay devotees, and even entertained a visit from the Queen Mother. Sakyadhita International is an organization, which was formed to support women who want to become fully ordained bhikkhunis, a form of Buddhist monasticism that has been resisted by male patriarchy for centuries. So I expected that most of the more than 50 speakers would be expounding various details of monastic precepts and their associated commentaries and sutras.

    Introduction Following the success of the Early Buddhism Course of 2013, the Buddhist Library will hold a course on Karma & Rebirth in Early Buddhism. Whereas the 2013 course was a general survey of Early Buddhist texts, teachings, and practices, the current course focus on the key, interrelated teachings of karma and rebirth. The course will follow a similar format of teachings, discussions, and meditations, with readings assigned for each workshop. The course will be available on the internet for those not able to attend personally. As in 2013, the course will be held at the Buddhist Library once a month on a Sunday. The course was put together by Bhante Sujato and Ajahn Brahmali, and will be presented at the Buddhist Library by Bhante Sujato. The proposed schedule is as follows. Details are subject to change, so please check each month to confirm. Also, notice that the workshop can fall on a different week each month, due to the scheduling of the Buddhist Library.
