Two of the new modems they sent out did not work and each took eight days to arrive by post. It was very frustrating just when I needed the computer to be operational. The weather here has been very erratic. There was no rain in October until the last day when 18mm fell. There were numerous warm days well above the average and I had to water the smaller plants that had just gone in the ground. Normally we would receive about 100mm for the month. The inland members gardens have been experiencing very dry conditions and the possibility of a very hot summer will see many plants needing the addition of moisture. Outback Queensland in particular is in the throes of a severe drought and the Hakeas from that region such as maconochieana, collina and ivoryi will be greatly stressed as well as being prone to damage from goats. Along the east coast from Gippsland to northern NSW there has been plenty of rain and gardens have been subject to very wet conditions. In Western Australia Jennifer Young has reported that good winter rains have transformed the northern sand plains into a blaze of flowering plants from Exmouth to Kalbarri. Our garden in Colac continues to thrive. -

Soils in the south-west of Western Australia and South Africa are among the most phosphorus- impoverished in the world, and at the same time both of these regions are Global Biodiversity Hotspots. This unique combination offers an excellent opportunity to study root adaptations that are significant in phosphorus (P) acquisition. A large proportion of species from these P-poor environments cannot produce an association with mycorrhizal fungi, but, instead, produce ‘root clusters’. In Western Australia, root- cluster-bearing Proteaceae occur on the most P-impoverished soils, whereas the mycorrhizal Myrtaceae tend to inhabit the less P-impoverished soils in this region. Root clusters are an adaptation both in structure and in functioning; characterized by high densities of short lateral roots that release large amounts of exudates, in particular carboxylates (anions of di- and tri-carboxylic acids). The functioning of root clusters in Proteaceae (’proteoid’ roots) and Fabaceae (‘cluster’ roots) has received considerable attention, but that of ‘dauciform’ root clusters developed by species in Cyperaceae has barely been explored. Research on the physiology of ‘capillaroid’ root clusters formed by species in Restionaceae has yet to be published. Root-cluster initiation and growth in species of the Cyperaceae, Fabaceae and Proteaceae are systemically stimulated when plants are grown at a very low P supply, and are suppressed as leaf P concentrations increase. -

Unit 5A 209 Chester Pass Road Albany WA 6330 9842 1575 [email protected] ABN 48 138 824 272 Job Ref: COA011 7th December 2016 Sandra Maciejewski Reserves Officer City of Albany PO Box 484 Albany WA 6331 Updated Report – Version 2 Targeted Threatened Flora Search Proposed Demonstration Trail Mount Clarence Albany Dear Sandra, On the 26th October 2016 Botanists/Ecologist, Karlene Bain and Bianca Theyer (Bio Diverse Solutions) undertook a targeted linear threatened flora search of 840m for a proposed mountain bike alignment at Mount Clarence, City of Albany (refer to Attachment A for the survey area). This survey was required as there was potential for threatened flora to be present within the subject area and there is proposed clearing of native vegetation as part of the proposed bike trail. The scope of work included: Undertake Targeted Flora Survey across subject site through linear sampling (10m buffer) in vegetation types present and mapping of boundaries of vegetation; Undertake any identification of any flora species, including herbarium identification if required; GPS and map any populations of Threatened Species (if applicable); and Prepare brief report on findings as per appropriate government agency legislation and guidelines. It is noted this survey was undertaken during the spring flowering period. The threatened flora search of the linear bike trail found that the Mount Clarence reserve is a diverse habitat with four vegetation types mapped, being: 1. Granite outcrop and fringing Taxandria shrub land; 2. Tall Gastrolobium shrub land; 3. Open Jarrah/ Marri woodland; and 4. Coastal heath. In November 2016 an occurrence of Stylidium falcatum (P1) was found (5 plants) on laterite soils associated with a cleared alignment for a powerline, on the edge of the jarrah/ marri ecotype. -

The eradication and control of invasive alien plants (IAP) is essential for the restoration of native plant communities. Understanding ecological impacts and potential invasive risks of IAP is important for their effective management, particularly for prioritisation. Most studies concerning impacts on vegetation structure and plant-pollinator interactions have measured few ecological metrics, resulting in a superficial understanding of plant species invasion. -

Australian Plants Suitable for Tamworth Regional Council Areas Eucalyptus blakelyi Photo Tony Croft Tamworth Group of Australian Plants Society As at July 2007 Eucalyptus blakelyi II TAMWORTH REGIONAL COUNCIL RAINFALL DATA Most of the Tamworth Regional Council area receives an average annual rainfall of 600 to 800mm except for the north- west corner on the Mount Kaputar plateau and the tablelands country from Bendemeer through Woolbrook to Hanging Rock above Nundle which often receives between 800 to 1000mm. Similarly temperatures vary across the region with average annual minimums on the tablelands and nearby areas between 6 and 9 degrees Celsius. A series of frosts are received across the entire region each winter. Average annual maximums are between 18 and 21 degrees on the tablelands, 21 to 24 degrees across most of the region and 24 to 27 degrees in the west of the region. 1. Barraba 2. AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY AUSTRALIA HAKEA STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER No.71 OCTOBER 2019 ISNN0 727-7008 Leader: Paul Kennedy Address: 210 Aireys St. Elliminyt Vic 3250 E mail [email protected] Dear members, The extremely dry conditions across much of Australia means many of our Hakea species are under stress. I have recently taken a trip through Central NSW and inland Queensland and saw first-hand just how dry the country was. It will take a number of years of good rains to restore the flora to a healthy state and initiate germination of new plants from seed. The route taken did not take me through areas where Hakeas grow mainly, however there were a number that I stopped to look at. Hakea decurrens ssp. decurrens grows in one location beside the Newell Highway north of Coonabarabran in Piliga scrub. In past trips I have watched the population diminish due to road works and very dry conditions. On this trip there were none alive and I fear it may be gone forever. Fortunately a number of members have it in their gardens where it seems to be tolerant of varying climatic and soil conditions provided it is well drained. If you disturb its roots it will sucker. Thanks to the help of APS Qld. Rockhampton members I was able to locate Hakea trineura in the wild. It occurs in a very small area of about 30 klms radius at Marlborough on serpentine soils. Just looking for the right soil conditions is a challenge as serpentine soils are spasmodic in occurrence and you have to find soils that have creamish gravel on the surface. -
