Hackley Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities May 8, 2014 It is a great privilege to stand before you tonight and deliver the 2014 Charles H. Hackley Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities, and to receive this prestigious award in his name. As a child growing-up in Muskegon in the 1950s and 1960s, the name of Charles Hackley was certainly a respected name, if not an icon from Muskegon’s past, after which were named: the hospital in which I was born, the park in which I played, a Manual Training School and Gymnasium, a community college, an athletic field (Hackley Stadium) in which I danced as the Muskegon High School Indian mascot, and an Art Gallery and public library that I frequently visited. Often in going from my home in Lakeside through Glenside and then to Muskegon Heights, we would drive on Hackley Avenue. I have deep feelings about that Hackley name as well as many good memories of this town, Muskegon, where my life journey began. It is really a pleasure to return to Muskegon and accept this honor, after living away in the state of Minnesota for forty-six years. I also want to say thank you to the Friends of the Hackley Public Library, their Board President, Carolyn Madden, and the Director of the Library, Marty Ferriby. This building, in which we gather tonight, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, also holds a very significant place in the life of my family. My great-grandfather, George Alfred Matthews, came from Bristol, England in 1878, and after living in Newaygo and Fremont, settled here in Muskegon and was a very active deacon in this congregation until his death in 1921.

Barnett Editor’s Introduction to the English Edition This volume documents the course of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life and work from November 1937 to March 1940—a brief but decisive span of history that included the March 1938 Anschluß of Austria; the Evian refugee conference in France, at which thirty-two nations decided against easing immigration restrictions on Jewish refugees; the Sudeten crisis and Munich agreement, which led to the ceding of the Sudetenland to Nazi Germany; the November 1938 pogrom in Nazi Germany (Kristallnacht); and finally the beginning of the Second World War with the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. Although the death camps were yet not in operation, the mass killings of Jews in eastern Europe began immediately with the German invasion of the east, and the “euthanasia” program—the Nazi murders of institutionalized patients—began in late 1939. Through- out this period there was a steady intensification not only of Nazi anti-Jew- ish laws but of laws and open violence against Jews throughout Europe. For the Confessing Church, it was a bleak period that exposed both the church’s lack of internal unity and its utter failure to oppose National Socialism. The early unanimity against the extreme “Aryan” theology of the German Christians had dissolved by the October 1934 Dahlem synod. Even most of those who hewed to the “radical” Dahlem line were not necessarily opponents of National Socialism. November 2005 Sehr geehrter Herr Bürgermeister, liebe Frau Weissinger, meine sehr geehrten Damen und Herren, ich danke für die Einladung, hier in dieser Gedenkstunde an Friedrich Weissler erinnern zu dürfen. Lassen Sie mich aber zuvor mit einem aktuellen Jahrestag beginnen: 1 Vor genau 60 Jahren: Stuttgarter Schulderklärung Als in Deutschland nach Kriegsende der neu gegründete Rat der Evan- gelischen Kirche am 18./19. Oktober 1945 in Stuttgart tagt, tauchen recht unerwartet einige Vertreter des Ökumenischen Rates der Kir- chen (ÖRK) auf. Die Atmosphäre zwischen den ausländischen Kir- chenvertretern und den deutschen ist gut.     The Establishment of IIT Madras The Establishment of IIT Madras German Cold War Development Assistance and Engineering Education in India ROLAND WITTJE1 Abstract The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras was established between 1959 and 1974 with assistance of the Federal Republic of Germany, which was the largest West German enterprise in the fi eld of technical education abroad. The support consisted of German experts for teaching and in setting up laboratories and workshops. In this article, I argue that the engagement of the Federal Republic at IIT Madras must be understood primarily as a political project. The Federal Republic saw itself in direct competition with the Soviet Union, but also with the USA and the UK, which in turn supported the estab- lishment of the IITs in Bombay, Kanpur and Delhi. While West Germany’s engagement had initially been motivated by infl uencing India’s position on divided post-war Germany, this changed towards the end of the 1960s to the vested interest of German policymakers in long-term scientifi c and technical cooperation. The German assistance was reoriented, from workshop-based engineering education to setting up a technological research university. Plan- ning and policy were guided by political premises, to which the educational and scientifi c aspects were subordinate, and German staff was controlled and restricted in its scientifi c freedom. The German faculty saw themselves confronted with implementing a project which had been politically prede- fi ned as a successful Indo-German collaboration, by establishing meaningful research and engineering training. As a case study, the article contributes to the important history of aid in technical educational as part of West- as well as East German development aid during the Cold War, which so far has received little if any attention among historians.

Dabei ist es die Absicht des BMWi, die drei Häuser „soweit wie möglich zu Trägern der jeweiligen Forschung in ihrem Haus“ zu machen. Bonhoeffer has been closed.[3] Decisive for my decision was the fact that the entire teaching staff of the seminary[4] belonged to the confessional front and the purpose of this teach- ing institution clearly was to educate the vicars in the spirit of the confessional front and to equip them with the tools to complete the second theological exam before the examination offices of the confessional front. In order to prevent the influence of the Confessing Church on theological education, I find it necessary that above all the preachers’ seminaries that are under the direction of the confessional front and guided by its spirit should be closed.     GERMAN IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR NEWSPAPERS IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA By KLAUS G. WUST The history of the German element in the District of Columbia has yet to be written. Local life in the national capital as a subject for historio- graphy has not provided the same attractions to professional and amateur historians as have the events in cities, areas or states which have grown naturally out of geographic and economic circumstances. Local events in Washington, though colorful at times, have always been overshadowed by the prominence of national affairs. The composition of its population has been largely determined by the functions and requirement of the many federal agencies. The District of Columbia as a political entity has under- gone great population shifts several times during its history, the most sig- nificant having taken place in the recent past. Furthermore, it would be virtually impossible to describe the history of any segment of the Washing- ton population without looking across the district line into the counties of Northern Virginia and Maryland where many of the people reside who are playing a part in its civic and social life. This is particularly true of the German element which has shown a marked tendency towards locating in the suburbs of the two neighboring states throughout the last 50 years. The Washington area has always had a sizeable foreign-born population, but immigration here was different from that found in other eastern cities. The absence of large industries and a commercial life limited to the require- ments of the capital and its immediate surroundings are the main reasons for this difference in the social pattern of immigrant life.
