This children’s work edition of Journeys in the Spirit comes out monthly. It offers resources and ideas to Quakers engaging with children aged 4–12 years in a Quaker setting. It is offered with the intention of providing an opportunity for exploring, creating and learning in an atmosphere of worship in partnership on our shared journey in the spirit. Included are sections on: getting ready, for those co-ordinating the programme; gather, meeting, centering, focusing: engage, beginning to think about the theme; respond, activities linked to the theme; reflect, ending appropriately; and review, evaluating what has happened. To offer a balanced session you should aim to do something from each section. Some of the activities are included on additional sheets. Timings or ages are not stated, as this will depend on the group and how the guidance and activities are used. Underpinning each issue is the idea that there are four directions to our spiritual journey. Inwards to ourselves; outwards to others; upwards (or even further inwards?) towards the deeper mystery; downwards to the world we live in. Journeys in the Spirit offers resources and ideas to Quakers engaging with children and young people. Urbanisation, Elite Attitudes and Philanthropy: Cardiff, 1850–1914
NEIL EVANS URBANISATION, ELITE ATTITUDES AND PHILANTHROPY: CARDIFF, 1850-1914* How did philanthropy adjust to the transformation of society in the nineteenth century? What was its role in social relations and in relieving poverty? Recent writers studying these issues have suggested the need for detailed studies at local level, and in studying some English towns and cities in the earlier part of the nineteenth century they have come to varying conclusions. Roger Smith's study of Nottingham shows that philanthropy added insignificantly to the amount of relief available through the Poor Law.1 By contrast Peter Searby's study of Coventry shows that philanthropic funds were quite abundant and after some reforms in the 1830's even applied to the relief of the poor!2 Professor McCord's articles on the North-East of England in the early nineteenth century seek to establish the more ambitious claim "that nineteenth-century philanthropy provided increasing resources and extended machinery with which to diminish the undesirable effects of that period's social problems".3 As yet, there has been no attempt to study philanthropic provision in a newly developing town without an industrial tradition in the late nineteenth century. Design and typesetting by Gabrielle Scott Printed by X www.quaker.org.uk Sharing our meetings’ stories Background Over recent years, an increasing number of Friends and meetings have recognised the importance of the link between the shared life of our meeting, our outreach and engagement with the wider world and our own individual, inner life. Enriching and enlivening one will in turn give life, vitality and purpose to the others; they each feed and are nourished by one another. There are things that Friends and meetings do that deepen and strengthen their life together: practices, experiences and aspects of their shared life that help them to grow both individually and as communities. At the same time, the life of every meeting has challenges and experiences times of conflict and difficulty. The work of both Quaker Life and Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre is to offer support, resource and encouragement to meetings, responding to their needs and listening to their experiences. As part of a process of creating a new learning resource called ‘Being Friends Together’, a group of staff from Woodbrooke and Quaker Life and Friends from the Quaker Life Network initiated a series of visits to meetings around the country, simply in order to hear their stories. -

Abstract During the 1850s there was rising concern in the Society of Friends about declining membership. From the 1840s attempts were made to obtain hard statistics on adherence and in the late 20th century another decline again reduced numbers to the level of the 1850s and 1860s. This thesis reviews and analyses data from the middle of the 19th century to 2012, illuminating variation in both membership and participation in church worship and governance. It presents new data on participation in meeting for worship and provides geographical and socio- metric data on the origins of enquiries about Quakerism, providing both a research tool for further work by bringing large volumes of information together and illuminating the ways in which the size and the social structure of the Society of Friends has varied with time. -

4 Fruits of the Spirit: Friends Testimonies
NOTE TO FRIENDS: This draft is a revision of parts of chapters 4, 5, and 6 of the 1993 NPYM Faith and Practice, according to the new outline which gathers all material about a topic (description, quotations, advices, queries) into the same place in the book. This chapter “Fruits of the Spirit” deals with Quaker testimonies. Some parts of this chapter are new to Faith and Practice, as requested by NPYM Friends: Integrity, Harmony with Creation, “Be Not Afraid,” plus new material in Community and Stewardship. Comments or questions about specific additions, deletions, or changes appear in [[italics in double square brackets]]. These comments will not appear in the final version of Faith and Practice. 4 Fruits of the Spirit: Friends Testimonies [[Note to Friends: these introductory paragraphs are new to Faith and Practice.]] Testimonies are fruits of the Spirit marking directions for our lives. On one level, testimonies can be seen as values or principles of morality. On a deeper level, what Friends call “testimonies” are the result of being changed by direct interaction with Transcendent Reality. Transformation from worldly to spiritual—our journey into Light—is the result of an encounter with the Spirit and of our response to that encounter. Learning a moral code will not in itself make us good. Stories, histories, and journals can help us understand how to act rightly in the world. But it is only when we are drawn to the good and have internalized it—as opposed to merely understanding it—are we able to be good. Friends traditionally describe personal transformation as a gradual development over a lifetime. -

Minute 3: Welcome to all We welcome everyone who is attending any part of Yearly Meeting Gathering this year. This year 2,149 people have registered in advance to attend. Of this number, there are 430 non-members attending with permission. Minute 4: Children and Families, Young People’s Programmes and Junior Yearly Meeting As well as the Friends gathered here, there are 65 children and young people attending Yearly Meeting Gathering. These comprise: 34 0–11 year olds and their families in three groups participating in the Children and Families sessions exploring the theme Let’s explore our world and find who we are. 18 11–15 year olds taking part in the Young People’s Programme on the theme Exploring Truth, Finding Hope. 13 15–18 year olds taking part in Junior Yearly Meeting on the theme For our comfort and discomfort: how can we use Quaker testimonies to live faithfully? There are 18 adult volunteers working across these programmes, supported by members of the Quaker Life staff team. -
Jane Williams (Ysgafell) (1806-85) and Nineteenth-Century Welsh Identity
Gwyneth Tyson Roberts Department of English and Creative Writing Thesis title: Jane Williams (Ysgafell) (1806-85) and nineteenth-century Welsh identity SUMMARY This thesis examines the life and work of Jane Williams (Ysgafell) and her relation to nineteenth-century Welsh identity and Welsh culture. Williams's writing career spanned more than fifty years and she worked in a wide range of genres (poetry, history, biography, literary criticism, a critique of an official report on education in Wales, a memoir of childhood, and religious tracts). She lived in Wales for much of her life and drew on Welsh, and Welsh- language, sources for much of her published writing. Her body of work has hitherto received no detailed critical attention, however, and this thesis considers the ways in which her gender and the variety of genres in which she wrote (several of which were genres in which women rarely operated at that period) have contributed to the omission of her work from the field of Welsh Writing in English. The thesis argues that this critical neglect demonstrates the current limitations of this academic field. The thesis considers Williams's body of work by analysing the ways in which she positioned herself in relation to Wales, and therefore reconstructs her biography (current accounts of much of her life are inaccurate or misleading) in order to trace not only the general trajectory of this affective relation, but also to examine the variations and nuances of this relation in each of her published works. The study argues that the liminality of Jane Williams's position, in both her life and work, corresponds closely to many of the important features of the established canon of Welsh Writing in English.
