ROBERT GERAINT GRUFFYDD Robert Geraint Gruffydd 1928–2015 GERAINT GRUFFYDD RESEARCHED IN EVERY PERIOD—the whole gamut—of Welsh literature, and he published important contributions on its com- plete panorama from the sixth to the twentieth century. He himself spe- cialised in two periods in particular—the medieval ‘Poets of the Princes’ and the Renaissance. But in tandem with that concentration, he was renowned for his unique mastery of detail in all other parts of the spec- trum. This, for many acquainted with his work, was his paramount excel- lence, and reflected the uniqueness of his career. Geraint Gruffydd was born on 9 June 1928 on a farm named Egryn in Tal-y-bont, Meirionnydd, the second child of Moses and Ceridwen Griffith. According to Peter Smith’sHouses of the Welsh Countryside (London, 1975), Egryn dated back to the fifteenth century. But its founda- tions were dated in David Williams’s Atlas of Cistercian Lands in Wales (Cardiff, 1990) as early as 1391. In the eighteenth century, the house had been something of a centre of culture in Meirionnydd where ‘the sound of harp music and interludes were played’, with ‘the drinking of mead and the singing of ancient song’, according to the scholar William Owen-Pughe who lived there. Owen- Pughe’s name in his time was among the most famous in Welsh culture. An important lexicographer, his dictionary left its influence heavily, even notoriously, on the development of nineteenth-century literature. And it is strangely coincidental that in the twentieth century, in his home, was born and bred for a while a major Welsh literary scholar, superior to him by far in his achievement, who too, for his first professional activity, had started his career as a lexicographer. -

Election to Fellowship | Election Cycle 2015/16 Guidance Notes for Proposers and Candidates Proposers and Candidates are advised that: 1. The Candidate must be nominated by TWO Fellows: a Lead Proposer and a Seconding Proposer. A list of current Fellows is appended. 2. In order to help correct the under-representation of women in the Fellowship, Fellows are permitted to act as the Lead Proposer for three NEW candidates only each election cycle. However, the nomination of female candidates is exempt from this restriction. 3. All nominations must include: a completed Summary Statement of Recommendation (to include the Candidate’s name, the text of the Statement, the Lead Proposer’s name and signature, and the name of the Seconding Proposer; a completed Summary Curriculum Vitae for the Candidate (to be signed by both the Candidate and the Lead Proposer); and one completed Seconding Proposer Form. 4. These, together with Referees’ reports (see paragraph 12, below), are the only documents that will be used by the Society in considering the nomination. No unsolicited additional materials, references or letters of support will be accepted as part of the nomination. It is therefore imperative that all the relevant sections of the documents are completed as fully as possible. 5. It is the overall responsibility of the Lead Proposer to formulate and present the case for election and to collate all of the relevant forms for submission to the Society. The Lead Proposer must complete the Summary Statement of Recommendation and the Summary Curriculum Vitae; the Seconding Proposer is responsible for completing a Seconding Proposer’s Form and sending it to the Lead Proposer in electronic form (WORD, pdf or scanned). -

Ian Roberts, Head of Schools Senior Responsible Officer 1 2 Foreword The Outline Business Case (OBC) is submitted by Powys County Council, in conjunction with NPTC Group of Colleges, and has been developed in conjunction with a composite team from the Council. The OBC has been prepared using the agreed standards and format for business cases, as set out by HM Treasury and Welsh Assembly Government. The approved format is the Five Case Model, which comprises the following key components: The Strategic Case section. This sets out the strategic context and the case for change, together with the supporting Investment Objectives for the scheme. The Economic Case section. This demonstrates that the organisation has selected a preferred way forward, which best meets the existing and future needs of the service and is likely to optimise value for money (VFM). The Commercial Case section. This outlines what any potential deal might look like. The Financial Case section. This highlights likely funding and affordability issues and the potential balance sheet treatment of the scheme. The Management Case section. This demonstrates that the scheme is achievable and can be delivered successfully in accordance with accepted best practice. -

Jane Williams (Ysgafell) (1806-85) and Nineteenth-Century Welsh Identity
Gwyneth Tyson Roberts Department of English and Creative Writing Thesis title: Jane Williams (Ysgafell) (1806-85) and nineteenth-century Welsh identity SUMMARY This thesis examines the life and work of Jane Williams (Ysgafell) and her relation to nineteenth-century Welsh identity and Welsh culture. Williams's writing career spanned more than fifty years and she worked in a wide range of genres (poetry, history, biography, literary criticism, a critique of an official report on education in Wales, a memoir of childhood, and religious tracts). She lived in Wales for much of her life and drew on Welsh, and Welsh- language, sources for much of her published writing. Her body of work has hitherto received no detailed critical attention, however, and this thesis considers the ways in which her gender and the variety of genres in which she wrote (several of which were genres in which women rarely operated at that period) have contributed to the omission of her work from the field of Welsh Writing in English. The thesis argues that this critical neglect demonstrates the current limitations of this academic field. The thesis considers Williams's body of work by analysing the ways in which she positioned herself in relation to Wales, and therefore reconstructs her biography (current accounts of much of her life are inaccurate or misleading) in order to trace not only the general trajectory of this affective relation, but also to examine the variations and nuances of this relation in each of her published works. The study argues that the liminality of Jane Williams's position, in both her life and work, corresponds closely to many of the important features of the established canon of Welsh Writing in English. -

King’s College London Access and Participation Plan 2020/21 to 2024/25 In King’s College London’s Vision 2029 we set out our commitment to make the world a better place and “lead the UK Russell Group in terms of social mobility and widening participation”. To do this “we will continue to reach out and recruit students with great potential, from diverse social and national backgrounds, and ensure, through academic and financial support, that they are all equally able to flourish”. Over the past five years, we supported students from underrepresented backgrounds to access university through high quality, innovative and impactful programmes. We have travelled a significant distance in that time and have embedded a focus on equality of opportunity across the student lifecycle. We are committed to building on our performance in access, student success and progression to meet the challenges identified in this plan as we set our direction for the next five years. Section 1: Assessment of performance In conducting our self-assessment, we primarily used the Office for Students dataset. We assessed performance across each lifecycle stage for different students over time and established changes in rates in absolute terms. We identified where trends have been persistently negative (or static). We combined this with looking at gaps between groups, focussing on where gaps and rates of change are most significant or meaningful. All analysis below uses the population ‘All Undergraduates (Full Time)’ (UK, except for Index of Multiple Deprivation which refers to English students). Figures are expressed as percentage of the population. Attainment refers to achievement of First and 2.1. -
