IV. TEACHING, RESEARCH, ADMINISTRATIVE AND MANAGERIAL EXPERIENCE

a) TEACHING

I taught medical students as a resident Doctor in the department of Radiotherapy in Lagos

University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba and have been te aching medical students since

2005 when I joined University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).

I am also involved in training resident Doctors in Clinical Oncology and teaching of

postgraduate students of National Postgraduate College (Radiotherapy/Oncology).

b) RESEARCH

1. My early research activities were based on the appraisal, presentation, management of breast

cancer patients in an urban setting in Africa. One of my research work addresses the

prevalence and correlates of depressive disorders in outpatients with breast cancer in Lagos,

Nigeria. I found a high rate of associated depression among patients with breast cancer; this

disorder is usually left untreated and may affect the complications of breast cancer.

demographic factors on depression among breast cancer patients receiving

chemotherapy in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). African Health

Sciences Vol. 11 No.2, 341-345

2. Several of my studies document the survival rate of breast cancer in developing countries

published. The effect of poverty, late presentations and cultural inclinations were taken into

consideration. I teamed up with other medical researchers to investigate the role of hospital

based cancer registries (HBCR) in low and middle income countries, such as Nigeria. My

research showed that the information provided by HBCR is beneficial and can be utilized for

the improvement of cancer care delivery systems. a. Popoola A.O., Ibrahim N.A., Omodele F.O., Oludara M.A., Adebowale S.A., Igwilo A.I.

3 .I have also participated in a study on the impact of radiotherapy on survival of breast cancer patients. It was observed that the five year survival rate in Lagos Nigeria is relatively poor compared to most countries in the world. The poor survival rate is attributed to factors such as late presentation, the effectiveness of Radiotherapy in survival of breast cancer and poor follow up. Radiotherapy and Oncology 111:321-326.

An investigation on the level of adherence to cytotoxic drugs by breast cancer patients was carried out. The result of the investigation shows that the awareness of the oncologist and patients to the problem of non-adherence and communication regarding the importance of adherence to therapy may improve health outcomes.

architecture of 200 breast cancer samples from Nigerian women that is to be compare to the
