Hartford: F.J. Huntington, 1836. Third edition. [20 pp.] Printed wrappers. A collection of seven astronomical maps, along with a chart exhibiting relationships of objects in the solar system. Burritt’s work, originally published in 1833, was an example of a burgeoning style of popular star atlases which ‘retained the constellations but made no attempt to chart every star... The constellations feature prominently on Burritt’s maps, but the emphasis is on naked eye astronomy and only the brightest stars are shown.’ These were popular alternatives to expensive celestial globes, and led to an increased interest and public involvement in the field of astronomy. 12. [Literature] Lord Byron [George Gordon] The Corsair, A Tale. London: Thomas Davison, Whitefriars, for John Murray, Albemarle-Street., 1814. First edition, apparent second state (the words ‘The End’, the publisher’s imprint, and the ads do not follow text; paper watermarked 1812 & 1813), but differs in other aspects (dimensions, binding). It is possible this was a contemporary $150 rebinding, which would account for both discrepancies (Randolph, Studies for a Byron Bibliography). xi, [1], 100 pp. 8vo. 8 7/8 x 5 1/2. Full leather with gilt titles & decorations, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. The last work by the famous English poet who, along with Percy Shelley, John Keats, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and others, led the Romantic Movement in poetry. Dedicated to Thomas Moore - interestingly, in this dedication Byron states this will be ‘the last production with which I shall trespass on public patience’, when in fact his publishing success had only just begun with the release of the first two cantos of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage in 1812. He would write several dozen other major works before his death in 1824, which left his final work, Don Juan, incomplete. Good. Boards rubbed with minor loss from corners, ink name erased from title page (seemingly with some sort of solvent, which has left a light stain), pages faintly stained, one gathering sprung. 13. [Literature] Solzhenitsyn, Aleksandr I.; Whitney, Thomas P. The Gulag Archipelago, 1918-1956: An Experiment in Literary Investigation, in Three Volumes: I-II: The Prison Industry, Perpetual Motion; III-IV: The Destructive-Labor Camps, The Soul and Barbed Wire; V-VII: Katorga, Exile, Stalin is No More Harper & Row Publishers, 1974. First editions. xii, 660; vi, 712; $125 x, 558 pp. 8vo. An autobiographical account of imprisonment in a Russian gulag, by the winner of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature. “Drawing on his own incarceration and exile, as well as on evidence from more than 200 fellow prisoners and Soviet archives, Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn reveals the entire apparatus of Soviet repression -- the state within the state that ruled all-powerfully. Through truly Shakespearean portraits of its victims -- men, women, and children -- we encounter secret police operations, labor camps and prisons; the uprooting or extermination of whole populations, the ‘welcome’ that awaited Russian soldiers who had been German prisoners of war. Yet we also witness the astounding moral courage of the incorruptible, who, defenseless, endured great brutality and degradation.” Near fine in very good jackets. Jacket edges lightly rubbed, front endpapers of first volume toned as if something were laid in at some point, top page ridge of third volume faintly soiled. 14. [Lutherie] Heron-Allen, Ed. The O’Donnell Iselin family made their fortune in banking and were involved with Harvard University, New York Yacht Club, and oceanography. Columbus O’Donnell Iselin skippered the schooner ‘Chance’ on an expedition $175 to Newfoundland and Labrador in 1922. It is possible the inscription is to him, though he would have been only 15 years old at the time (unless the book was signed later than the date of publication). xvi, 277 pp. 8vo. The use of camouflage outside of the armed forces first began in the 1960s by anti-war protesters. From there, camouflage was further explored by artists and designers.
