  • Safaris to the Heart of All That Jazz
Safaris to the heart of all that jazz.... JoniMitchell.com 2014 Biography Series by Mark Scott, Part 6 of 16 In January of 1974, Joni began an extensive tour of North America with the L.A. Express, wrapping up with three concerts at the New Victoria Theatre in London, England. The final concert at the New Victoria was videotaped and an edited version was broadcast on the BBC television program The Old Grey Whistle Test in November of 1974. Larry Carlton and Joe Sample were playing with The Crusaders at the time and both opted not to go on the road with Joni and the L.A. Express. Guitarist Robben Ford replaced Larry Carlton and Larry Nash filled in for Joe Sample on piano. In a 2011 interview for JoniMitchell.com, Max Bennett said that although the pay was good for this tour, the musicians could have made more money playing gigs in L.A. and doing session work in the recording studios. Max said that the musicians loved the music, however, and that they were treated royally in every way throughout the tour. Excellent food, first class accommodations, limousines, private buses and private planes were all provided for the band’s comfort. Max also made a point of mentioning the quality of the audiences that attended the concerts. Attention was focused on the performances so completely that practically complete silence reigned in the theaters and auditoriums until after the last note of any given song was performed. For Max Bennett, “As far as tours go - I've been on several tours - this was the epitome of any great tour I've ever been on.

Dave Hartl’s 2014 Top Ten (or so) Most Influential Albums Another year slips by and I’m still listening to a lot of music. But for the first time in many years I’m looking backwards. The best bumper sticker of the year? “It’s not that I’m old… your music really does suck.” What is new amongst this year’s offerings is still rooted in the past, deeply. But inspiration is to be found, nonetheless. As always, here’s the Top 10 musical things that influenced me the most this year. If you’d like to respond, write to [email protected] and your contribution will be added to this document online for future downloads. In this way, we all get turned on to great music and cut through the jungle of A&R crap and hype that still remains out there. Enjoy, I did! 1.) John Coltrane: Offering: Live at Temple University Back in 1966, Temple University Radio WRTI was on the edge of the black free jazz scene as well as everything else that was happening (as opposed to its current conservative stance on music). John Coltrane’s concert at Temple in November that year was taped by WRTI and has lain dormant, becoming the stuff of legend in its real absence. The teenage Michael Brecker who witnessed the event decided that night to become a tenor sax player, much to the world’s benefit. The reports of Coltrane beating on his chest and bellowing like a wounded animal gave credence to the viewpoint that the far-out explorations he undertook in the last 2 years of his life, driving his famous quartet out of the picture, were the symptoms of madness, pain, or possible LSD experimentation.

For mysterious reasons, James Taylor (1), of all people, became the prototype for the erudite and creative singer-songwriter of the 1970s. Despite occasional (and half-hearted) nods to jazz and rhythm'n'blues, Taylor did not introduce significant innovations, and even his best album, Sweet Baby James (dec 1969 - feb 1970), hardly compares with the masterpieces of the era. Ditto for veteran songwriter Carole King (1), whose solo album Tapestry (jan 1971 - mar 1971) was hailed as a revolution when, in fact, was still a collection of melodic pop songs. Even more over-rated was Carly Simon, whose No Secrets (sep/oct 1972 - nov 1972) propelled her to the top of the musical and the feminist movement. On the other hand, Phoebe "Snow" Laub was the "real thing", a folk-jazz-blues contralto who seasoned the ballads of Phoebe Snow (? 1972/? 1973 - jul 1974) with scat and melisma. Detroit's gospel singer Laura Lee explored the female condition on Women's Love Rights (jul/aug 1971 - oct 1971), alternating singing and rap monologues.
