Reaching for the First Blue Sky: New Record Reviews
Reaching For The First Blue Sky: New Record Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world With Brexit looming ever closer, those of us who live in the UK are preparing ourselves for the worst. If the hard-line Brexiteers get their way we will be dragged back to the dark ages, but with worse hair, clothes and hygiene. And even though, as I write this, hundreds of thousands march in London, while a petition to revoke Article 50 has reached over four million signatures, there is a feeling of powerlessness upon the people, that we are being forced off a cliff no matter what we do. With politics in this country destroying what little equilibrium we have, the escapism supplied by music and culture is more important than ever. This month I will be discussing some of the recent releases which have been easing my depression and taking my mind to a better place. We have the big hearted rave rush of Placid Angles, the bitter-sweet ruminations of Masha Qrella, the lush house grooves of Octo Octa and Jayda G, the widescreen ambiance of Mario Hammer And The Lonely Robot, Weval’s smooth downtempo jams, and lots more. BY JOHN BITTLES So, turn the news off and the volume up, and let us begin… Twenty-two years since its last appearance, John Beltran’s Placid Angles alias re-emerges this month with the delicate house majesty of First Blue Sky. Out now on Lone’s always fabulous Magicwire imprint, the album finds the celebrated producer mixing dreamy deep house, rave nostalgia, and melodic ambiance in style. -

Stephen Malkmus Pr En
STEPHEN MALKMUS & THE JICKS (USA ) Sparkle Hard Label: Domino Records Release Date: 18.05.2018 Web: stephenmalkmus.com/ EPK: irascible.ch/de/releases/stephen-malkmus-the-jicks/sparkle-hard/ Modesty and plain good manners might prevent them from saying so themselves, but the fact that Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks have thrived, rather than simply endured over 17 years and delivered six albums of buzzy, sub -cultural significance, constitutes an impressi ve legacy. The challenge with album number seven is one that any successful band with integrity faces: how to safeguard that legacy and hold on to their identity without rehashing old ground (unthinkable), and also say something meaningful while (crucially ) having fun doing it? Meeting that issue head on in the run up to The Jicks’ seventh record involved some “navel gazing”, according to singer, songwriter and guitarist Malkmus and not only in terms of what it means to be releasing music in 2018. If, like him, you’re a voracious consumer of all kinds of culture and feel the need to interact with it, rather than just react, then inevitably “there’s a world that prompts you to put your best foot forward”. With ‘Sparkle Hard’ Malkmus, Mike Clark (keyboards), Joanna Bolme (bass) and Jake Morris (drums) do exactly that. And they hit the ground running – on air treads. It’s light ’n’ breezy, head-down heavy, audacious, melancholic and reflective, goodtime and bodacious, and it pulls off the smartest trick: it’s both unmistakeably The Jicks and – due to the streamlining of their trademark tics and turns, plus the introduction of some unexpected flourishes (Auto-Tune! A fiddle! Guest vocalist Kim Gordon! One seven-minute song with an acoustic folk intro!) – The Jicks refashioned. -

Family Horrors and Hidden Paradises: New Album Reviews
Family Horrors And Hidden Paradises: New Album Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world There are so many excellent new albums around right now that, this week, I hardly know where to begin. We have house magnificence from Demuja and Kann, gorgeously deep ambiance from Gas, the leftfield techno brilliance of Jon Hopkins, Forest Swords, Max Cooper and Aïsha Devi and lots more. By JOHN BITTLES So, tell your piggy bank to make peace with its maker, and let us begin… Jon Hopkins‚ Immunity LP was close to ubiquitous in 2013, rightly appearing in most Best Of lists for that year. While the follow-up was a long time coming the good news is that it is every bit as good. Released at the start of May, Singularity contains the same mixture of techno crunch, ambient interludes and emotional resonance which Jon’s long term fans have come to expect. The title track gets things off to a great start, stuttering beats joined by trance like synths on a song sure to have any self-respecting raver resembling one of Pavlov’s dogs. Next, lead single Emerald Rush begins all soft and tranquil before bursting into life with some mind mangling bass stabs. Other picks include the epic trance groover Neon Pattern Drum which resembles the highlight of a Paul Van Dyk set, the melancholic clanks of Everything Connected, the tranquil piano refrain Echo Dissolve and the light and airy house strains of Luminous Beings. Full of peaks and troughs, Singularity gives the listener a proper journey filled with high drama and a sense of loss when it comes to an end. -

February 18, 2020 For Immediate Release Stephen Malkmus Extends North American Tour in Support of Traditional Techniques, Out March 6th on Matador Watch La Blogothèque Performance of New Song, “Brainwashed” photo credit - Samuel Gehrke Stephen Malkmus will release his new album, Traditional Techniques, on March 6th via Matador. Today, he extends his North American tour and announces shows throughout the southwest and west coast. In addition to a previously-announced run including Chicago’s Thalia Hall, New York’s Webster Hall, and more, Malkmus will appear at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre, San Francisco’s The Fillmore, plus others. He will be joined by a brand new live band of Chris Funk (pedal steel, keys), Matt Sweeney (guitar), Brad Truax (bass), and Jake Morris (drums), and at times by Qais Essar (rabab) and Eric Zang (kaval, udu, daf). Tickets for newly-announced dates go on sale this Friday, February 21st at 10am local time. Additionally, Malkmus offers a further glimpse into Traditional Techniques via the La Blogothèque performance of new song, “Brainwashed.” Directed by Thibaut Charlut with sound direction by Henri d’Armancourt, the solo, acoustic performance was filmed in the midst of Parisian café La Fontaine de Belleville. Watch Stephen Malkmus Perform “Brainwashed” on La Blogothèque https://youtu.be/_6sTrx6l7ZE Traditional Techniques, Malkmus’ third solo LP without the Jicks (or Pavement), is new phase folk music for new phase folks, with Malkmus as attuned as ever to the rhythms of the ever-evolving lingual slipstream. An adventurous new album in an instantly familiar mode, Traditional Techniques creates a serendipitous trilogy with the loose fuzz of the Jicks’ Sparkle Hard (2018) and the solo bedroom experiments of Groove Denied (2019). -
“Shadowbanned” “Being Stephen Malkmus”
February 27, 2020 For Immediate Release Stephen Malkmus Releases New Single/Video, “Shadowbanned” “Being Stephen Malkmus” Instagram Filter Available Now Traditional Techniques Out March 6th on Matador; Tour Kicks Off March 31st photo credit - Samuel Gehrke Stephen Malkmus releases a new single/video, “Shadowbanned,” from his new album, Traditional Techniques, out March 6th on Matador. Following lead single “Xian Man,” “Shadowbanned” bursts with flute-laced swagger and Malkmus as attuned as ever to the rhythms of the ever-evolving lingual slipstream as he sings of “Amazon wheatfields and rivers of Red Bull//drip gush drip//data driven skip//to the part where the left bros parody TED talks.” Its video, directed by Jan Lankisch, features friends and fans of Malkmus, such as Kim Gordon, Mac DeMarco, Sharon Van Etten and Jason Schwartzman, performing “Shadowbanned” as a cartoon version of Malkmus (find a full list of appearances below). Their footage is interwoven with clips from older videos by Malkmus and Pavement in which the singer has been blurred, pixelated, and algorithmically replaced in order to render him invisible. "The video was inspired by reading about female singers and musicians who were photoshopped from their album covers by an Iranian music streaming site,” says Lankisch, who realized "Shadowbanned“with the help of Janosch Pugnaghi, Gesa Gadow, Lina Sieckmann and Miri Gossing. The video represents two polar opposites: the involuntary erasure of a person in visual imagery and one's desire to perform as a persona, thereby leaving the constraints of one's everyday identity behind. "Identity is a matter of design. People like to play with characters and pretend to be someone else.” For this reason, Lankisch and Pugnaghi developed a filter for Instagram called "Being Stephen Malkmus,” which operates via face detection. -
