Papers may be downloaded for personal use only. www.hks.harvard.edu Makingmoneybygivingitforfree: Radiohead’s pre-release strategy for In Rainbows∗ Marc Bourreau†,Pınar Dogan˘ ‡, and Sounman Hong§ June 2014 Abstract In 2007 a prominent British alternative-rock band, Radiohead, pre-released its album In Rainbows online, and asked their fans to "pick-their-own-price" (PYOP) for the digital down- load. The offer was available for three months, after which the band released and commercialized the album, both digitally and in CD. In this paper, we use weekly music sales data in the US between 2004-2012 to examine the effect of Radiohead’s unorthodox strategy on the band’s al- bum sales. We find that Radiohead’s PYOP offer had no effect on the subsequent CD sales. Interestingly, it yielded higher digital album sales compared to a traditional release. -

Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

On this Holy Saturday, here are eight Bible verses for you to keep near you for apologetic purposes. These eight verses describe the descent of Christ into the Limbo of the Fathers (also known as Abraham’s Bosom). Saint Paul teaches us in Ephesians 4:9 that Christ our Lord descended into Hell after He offered His life on the cross. “Now that He ascended, what is it, but because He also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?” Note here that Hell is described as having “parts” that is the four parts of Hell. Saint Peter said in Acts 2:24 that “God hath raised up Christ, having loosed the sorrows of hell, as it was impossible that He should be holden by it.” Christ loosed the Old Testament saints from hell. Saint Peter also wrote in 1 Peter 3:19 that “Christ coming in spirit preached to those spirits that were in prison, which had some time been incredulous.” On this verse, Saint Athanasius says that “Christ’s body was laid in the sepulchre when He went to preach to those spirits who were in bondage, as Peter said.” (Ep. ad Epict.) The prophet Hosea foretold the descent of Christ into Hell in Hosea 13:14 by placing these words into the mouth of the Messiah: “O death, I will be thy death; O hell, I will be thy bite.” Zechariah foretells the redemption of those in the Limbo of the Fathers in Zech 9:11: “Thou also by the blood of Thy Testament hast sent forth Thy prisoners out of the pit.” What could this mean except that the Messiah would free people from the underworld? Colossians 2:15: “Despoiling the principalities and powers, He hath exposed them confidently.” This refers to Christ’s victory over the condemned angels who are the demons of Hell. -

Les 60 000 spectateurs du Nice Jazz Festival et les 10 500 du Nice Music Live by Nice Jazz Festival en sont la preuve. La première édition du Nice Music Live, organisée en coproduction avec Adam Concerts, a été une véritable réussite grâce notamment à David Guetta, Selah Sue et Lindsey Stirling. J’ai souhaité que cet été s’annonce encore plus inoubliable. C’est une grande fierté pour nous que de voir Maroon 5, Rihanna ou bien encore Coldplay choisir Nice pour leur concert. Les 31 concerts du Nice Jazz Festival avec entres autres Massive Attack, Robert Plant, Mélody Gardot, ou bien encore Ibrahim Maalouf réuniront tous les publics. Fort du succès du Nice Music Live de l’an dernier, j’ai souhaité donner une autre dimension à ce festival toujours en coproduction avec Adam Concerts et 105dB. C’est ainsi que cette année il y aura 6 soirées pour 7 événements sur 2 scènes avec au programme Rodrigo y Gabriela, Maître Gims et BigFlo & Oli, Milky Chance, Broken Back, The Avener et Synapson, Fréro Delavega et Julian Perretta, Louise Attaque et Feu! Chatterton et le projet interactif « Silence Events » dont le concept novateur est d’écouter un concert muni d’un casque audio. Cette programmation, qui saura ravir encore un autre public, démontre que la ville de Nice aime la musique, toutes les musiques et confirme encore un peu plus son statut de destination estivale incontournable. -

REPERCUSSIÓ D’EDICIONS ANTERIORS Any rere any, el festival San Miguel Primavera Sound ha anat incrementant tant l’assistència de públic com la re- percussió als principals mitjans de premsa, ràdio i televisió. Si la primera edició va tancar amb una assistència de 8.000 persones, la del 2002 va arribar a 18.000 i la de 2003 va reunir entre els seus espais a més de 24.000 persones, l’assistència de 40.000 persones a l’any 2004 va significar un punt i apart i el festival va abandonar el Poble Espanyol.
