Album of the Week: Deerhoof's La Isla Bonita
Album Of The Week: Deerhoof’s La Isla Bonita Believe it or not, there are a few bands that have been around for a while that I have yet to take a dive into. One of those bands are San Francisco noise pop punk act Deerhoof, and their new album La Isla Bonita has shown me exactly what I’ve been missing. One of those bands that have managed to stick around since the mid-90s, the variety of sounds and dimensions in each track off of the album is jaw dropping. One moment it sounds like a psychedelic j- pop song and then unpredictably these crunchy rigid guitars come in and obliterate everything. So many influences and styles being showcased in one sound, Deerhoof’s new release is simply amazing with its stunning originality. The album was produced by former music journalist & ex-Mr. Dream drummer Nick Sylvester. For a band that has gained acclaim for being extremely DIY for self-producing their previous albums and self- managing, at first glance it could sound like a risk to make a departure from the norm with a different producer. Sylvester excels with excellent quality, and I also can’t get enough of Greg Saunier’s skills on drums. For all of this polish you might be thinking of, don’t fret. There are a good amount of ear- splitting riff rockers on La Isla Bonita as well. It’s November, which means it’s getting cold and one of your friends is already complaining about it. One thing you shouldn’t complain about are the top tracks off of my Album Of The Week. -

ALL THEM WITCHES RELEASE NEW WEST RECORDS’ DEBUT, DYING SURFER MEETS HIS MAKER, ON OCT. 30 BROOKLYN VEGAN STREAMING “DIRT PREACHERS” LOS ANGELES, August 12, 2015 – All Them Witches, the Nashville psych-rock quartet whose recent Bonnaroo debut was heraldeD by Fuse, American Songwriter, Consequence of Sound and the Nashville Scene, release their label debut, Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, on October 30 via New West Records. Brooklyn Vegan, who dubbed the outfit’s 2014 selF-released album, Lightning at the Door, “a heady brew oF swirling tones and heavy blue-eyed blues rock,” are streaming the new song “Dirt Preachers”: link. The song is one oF the nine new tracks recorDeD during the banD’s seclusion at a remote cabin in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. “You coulDn’t harDly walk in there, DoDging cables, mics anD guitars,” Parks says of the small space, “the cabin was a wreck. An exceptional tour by a collaborative ensemble featuring KONONO N°1, DEERHOOF, JUANA MOLINA, KASAI ALLSTARS, WILDBIRDS & PEACEDRUMS and SKELETONS The music created by Congolese bands Konono N°1 and Kasai Allstars (collectively known as ‘Congotronics’) has been enthusiastically acclaimed by everyone in the indie rock scene, from artists to fans to media. Released at the end of 2010, the epic double-album entitled Tradi-Mods vs Rockers: Alternative Takes on Congotronics was a collective tribute by 26 rock and electronic artists, who came up with their own, creative interpretations of the Congotronics bands’ music. The logical next step in this transcontinental encounter: this spring & summer, a special collaborative ensemble consisting of ten Congolese and ten indie rock musicians will get together to create a common, entirely fresh repertoire, building bridges between their respective worlds, for what promises to be one of the most spectacular musical events of 2o11. Appearing under the name CONGOTRONICS vs ROCKERS, the ensemble will include Konono N°1, Kasai Allstars, mighty US band Deerhoof, unique Argentinian artist Juana Molina, explosive Swedish experimental pop duo Wildbirds & Peacedrums, & inventive Brooklyn band Skeletons (represented by their leader Matt Mehlan), 2o musicians in total, all performing together. Crammed Discs, the instigator of CONGOTRONICS VS ROCKERS, will be 30 in 2011. The label will celebrate its anniversary in style with this project, which is aptly emblematic of Crammed’s adventures during these three decades.
