  • INFLUENCE Music Marketing Meets Social Influencers COVERFEATURE
06-07 Tools Kombie 08-09 Campaigns YACHT, Radiohead, James Blake 10-14 Behind The Campaign Aurora MAY 18 2016 sandboxMUSIC MARKETING FOR THE DIGITAL ERA ISSUE 157 UNDER THE INFLUENCE music marketing meets social influencers COVERFEATURE In the old days, there were a handful of gatekeepers – press, TV and radio – and getting music in front of them was hard, UNDER THE INFLUENCE but not impossible. Today, traditional media still holds significant power, but the number of influencers out there has shot up exponentially with the explosion of social media in general and YouTube in particular. While the world’s largest video service might be under fire over its (low) royalty rates, the music industry is well aware that its biggest stars offer a direct route to the exact audiences they want their music to reach. We look at who these influencers are, how they can be worked with and the things that will make them back or blank you. etting your act heard used to be, if not exactly easy, then at least relatively Gstraightforward for the music business: you’d schmooze the radio playlist heads, take journalists out to a gig and pray for some TV coverage, all while splashing out on magazine and billboard advertising. The digital era – and especially social media – have shaken this all up. Yes, traditional media is still important; but to this you can add a sometimes bewildering list of “social influencers”, famous faces on platforms like YouTube, Snapchat and Instagram, plus vloggers, Viners and the music marketing meets rest, all of whom (for now) wield an uncanny power over youthful audiences.

Words by Dan Keeling Noble Rot Photographs by meets ecstatic synth- SHOOT FROM THE CHIP SHOOT Benjamin McMahon poppers Hot Chip “Gordon Ramsay used to cook here a long time ago,” says Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, reading the menu at Chez Bruce in Wandsworth. “When I last ate here, a friend from uni was working in the kitchen and I absolutely loved it.” To Joe’s left, fellow band member Al Doyle is enjoying his first drink of the evening – Vouette & Sorbée ‘Saignée de Sorbée’ Champagne – after a day rehearsing in a nearby studio for the band’s imminent support headline slot at Hackney’s All Points East festival. With their new album heralding a high point in their long career (it’s their seventh), the aptly titled A Bath Full of Ecstasy has a blend Dan Keeling: Do you cook at home? Joe Goddard: I cook all the time. I’ve got a Green of synth melodies, bouncing house basslines Egg barbecue and cook a lot of seafood, as well as buying a lot of nice wines from Bottle Apostle to try and soulful vocals that makes it one of our to pair with it. I’m interested in the weirder side of wine. This Vouette & Sorbée reminds me of a records of the year at Rotter Towers. Imagine delicious sparkling red from near Barcelona that I’ve been drinking recently called La Rosita by Pamela Geddes. It’s dry and fruity: it tastes like sparkling Erasure jamming with Daft Punk, Laid Back and Ribena to me, and I’m into that! Frankie Knuckles in a lift, and you might be Al Doyle: It’s delicious and quite unusual – it almost tastes like Pét-Nat rather than Champagne.

COREY ZALOOM (senior manager, digital marketing) and BROOKE SALISBURY (head of marketing) of Domino Recording Company explain how they set up the album by getting their catalogue streaming in order after the label acquired three of their previous albums from EMI/Parlophone, where live was used to reawaken interest in the band, how the video for ‘Hungry Child’ reached far beyond their core audience and why both Instagram and TikTok were key new platforms in the band’s marketing arsenal. Getting the band’s catalogue streaming Domino acquired the band’s EMI/ CZ: We had a few goals going into the change in three or four years, so in order before the new album Parlophone catalogue in early 2018 album in spring 2019 and one was things like Instagram were a new BS: This is only our third album with [covering three albums between 2006 and to reactivate their catalogue. Provost Sr. Mary Louise Dorn Jackson James Lamar Provost Wilbur Daniel Moore Thank you for always being with me. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First, I must acknowledge The Creator, through which all blessings flow. I could not have embarked on this journey without the presence of the Lord in my life, Ashé. It wasn’t until I was deeply ingrained in the research that I realize that this work is a physical embodiment of my upbringing. To this end, I must thank my parents, my mother Janice Provost, for being the original strong black women in my life, who demonstrated strength through healing. I can never repay you for the seeds of healing and growth that you planted in me. To my father, Dexter Moore, the first DJ I ever knew. You have always been one of my biggest supporters. • The Duality of the Composer-Performer
The Duality of the Composer-Performer by Marek Pasieczny Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Arts Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Supervisors: Prof. Stephen Goss ©Marek Pasieczny 2015 The duality of the composer-performer A portfolio of original compositions, with a supplementary dissertation ‘Interviews Project: Thirteen Composers on Writing for the Guitar’. Abstract The main focus of this submission is the composition portfolio which consists of four pieces, each composed several times over for different combinations of instruments. The purpose of this PhD composition portfolio is threefold. Firstly, it is to contribute to the expansion of the classical guitar repertoire. Secondly, it is to defy the limits imposed by the technical facilities of the physical instrument and bring novelty to its playability. Third and most importantly, it is to overcome the challenges of being a guitarist-composer. Due to a high degree of familiarity with the traditional guitar repertoire, and possessing intimate knowledge of the instrument, it is often difficult for me as a guitarist-composer to depart from habitual tendencies to compose truly innovative works for the instrument. I have thus created a compositional approach whereby I separated my role as a composer from my role as a guitarist in an attempt to overcome this challenge. I called it the ‘dual-role’ approach, comprising four key strategies that I devised which involves (1) borrowing ‘New Music’ practices to defy traditionalist guitar tendencies which are often conservative and insular; (2) adapting compositional materials to different instrumentations; and expanding on (3) the guitar technique as well as; (4) the guitar’s inventory of extended techniques.

  • Reaching for the First Blue Sky: New Record Reviews
Reaching For The First Blue Sky: New Record Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world With Brexit looming ever closer, those of us who live in the UK are preparing ourselves for the worst. If the hard-line Brexiteers get their way we will be dragged back to the dark ages, but with worse hair, clothes and hygiene. And even though, as I write this, hundreds of thousands march in London, while a petition to revoke Article 50 has reached over four million signatures, there is a feeling of powerlessness upon the people, that we are being forced off a cliff no matter what we do. With politics in this country destroying what little equilibrium we have, the escapism supplied by music and culture is more important than ever. This month I will be discussing some of the recent releases which have been easing my depression and taking my mind to a better place. We have the big hearted rave rush of Placid Angles, the bitter-sweet ruminations of Masha Qrella, the lush house grooves of Octo Octa and Jayda G, the widescreen ambiance of Mario Hammer And The Lonely Robot, Weval’s smooth downtempo jams, and lots more. BY JOHN BITTLES So, turn the news off and the volume up, and let us begin… Twenty-two years since its last appearance, John Beltran’s Placid Angles alias re-emerges this month with the delicate house majesty of First Blue Sky. Out now on Lone’s always fabulous Magicwire imprint, the album finds the celebrated producer mixing dreamy deep house, rave nostalgia, and melodic ambiance in style.
