In 1934, St. Andrew’s Mission Hospital (SAMH) was incorporated under the SAMH Ordinance. Presently, SAMH is a social service agency and an approved Institution of a Public Character. SAMH provides health, education and social care services through: St. Andrew’s Autism Centre, St. Andrew’s Community Hospital, St. Andrew’s Mission Hospital Clinic, St. Andrew’s Nursing Homes, and St. Andrew’s Senior Care. Annual Report 2020 01 President’s Address The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23) GOD’S UNCEASING LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS 2020 had been a very challenging year as the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic hit the world. Witnessing how the COVID-19 pandemic affected many lives, St. Andrew’s Mission Hospital (SAMH) held fast to our mission of caring for those in need in our community. With God’s grace and His unceasing love, our centres continued to serve and support our beneficiaries. The faithfulness of Team SAMH in serving the community was also affirmed as 55 colleagues from SACH, five from Team SAMH awardees St. Andrew’s Nursing Home (SANH) (Henderson) as well at the CCEA 2020 as one from SANH (Queenstown) received the Silver virtual award ceremony. Annual Report 2020 03 President’s Address In 2020, SAMH was appointed by the Ministry of Education as the operator of the new national curriculum autism school. From January 2022, the autism school will be temporarily sited at Bukit Batok (currently Yusof Ishak Secondary School) and will move to its permanent site in Clementi from 2027. SERVING THE NEEDS OF THE new school will begin with an intake of 75 AGEING POPULATION students in 2022, operating at an interim In 2020, SAMH was appointed by the site in Bukit Batok, currently the Yusof Ishak Ministry of Health as the operator of a Secondary School. BARR1 Queensland University of Technology The “Asian values” debate sprang fully formed onto the international stage in the early 1990s—or so it seems from the mountain of literature on the subject. According to conventional wisdom, Lee Kuan Yew launched the concept from Singapore as part of a self-serving effort to justify Singapore’s paternalistic and illiberal system of government and to argue that Asian cultures are so different from western cultures that they are exempt from considerations of human rights (Öjendal and Antlöv1998, 527; Fukuyama 1998, 23). Much of the debate has there- fore focused on the politics of “Asian values”, particularly questions of ulterior motives. Advocates of “Asian values” are routinely and often correctly accused of putting forward self-serving arguments to justify human rights abuses and un- democratic practices. Advocates of “Asian values” also accuse their critics of hypo- crisy (Mahbubani 1998, 48–51 and 70–71), and of using human rights concerns as a means of pursuing ulterior political or economic agendas—a charge that carries sufficient truth to make it an effective foil in debate. Beyond the politics, however, there are serious questions to be pursued. As the debate has progressed it has become more common for academics to examine some of the assumptions and syllogisms of the “Asian values” argument, seeking not only evidence of ulterior motives and inconsistencies, but also the strands of truth that might otherwise be lost in the politics.

You are among the very first audiences to experience this award-winning play in WILD RICE’s new home. In so many ways, Thomas Lim’s Supervision represents what we hope our performing arts complex in Funan will do in developing and presenting the best of Singapore theatre. We will provide a platform for new voices and new works – enabling future generations of artists to learn and grow as they create art and tell us stories about Singapore today. Thomas’ play underwent a rigorous developmental process ahead of its premiere at the 2018 Singapore Theatre Festival. It was revised and refined in collaboration with director Glen Goei and his cast, our resident playwright Alfian Sa’at, and the audiences who came. Out of six nominations at this year’s Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards, Supervision went on to win two awards - including Best Original Script. It’s a great honour for us to bring back Supervision, so that more audiences can experience this searingly insightful production for themselves. This truly is a play for our times – one that inspires reflection about what’s happening in Singapore today, through 71-year-old Teck, a grumpy retiree, has just suffered a stroke that leaves him wheelchair- presenting us with three fully realised characters and a domestic situation with which bound.
