Excellent, definitive work introducing the J Class Cup EraBy HarbormasterThe author, Commodore Harold S. Vanderbilt, would by 1937 become the winningest America's Cup skipper, and hold that distinction until 2003. His record of 12-2 in America's Cup races was remarkable and a testament to his organization as well as sailing ability. His subsequent book, On The Wind's Highway (1939), marked the end of the J-Class era for 50 years. It's resurgence since 1990 makes this book all the more interesting.Enterprise: the Story of the Defense of the America's Cup in 1930 introduces us to the J's starting with the converted 1914-20 cup boats Resolute and Vanitie. It covers accepting Lipton's 5th challenge and the syndicate formation and build of 4 American J's: Enterprise, Weetamoe, Yankee, and Whirlwind. It answers why the most and least successful of these only raced in the 1930 season. To my knowledge, this is the first campaign written about extensively and it shows an unexpectedly high quality of writing for a sailor. Carleton Mitchell's 1959 work, Summer of the Twelves for example, and Mitchell was a professional writer as well as participant is not as good as Enterprise. This is a well written book.Vanderbilt clearly knew what he was doing in both the program and racing. Each photograph's nuances are discussed providing insight on techniques and materials of the time. The detail in the photographs and discussion in the text bring to life Enterprise in a way you will not get from other books on the subject. That's the real value of having the skipper write the book. Arthur Knapp's Race your Boat Right does the same thing 20 years later. Considering the mind-boggling changes in rig, this book will let you understand why you rarely see the exact same rig in photos of Enterprise. The development through the season of Enterprise's rig is astounding and surpasses that of the development seen including the wing rigs used on Oracle in 2010.Strongly recommended for those interested in today's Cup for understanding how it has evolved, and for those interested in the J-Class's evolution and resurrection.0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Enterprise: the story of the defense of the America's Cup in 1930By martinislExcellent book for the America's Cup or sailing enthusiast on the first defense of the America's Cup sailed in J Class Yachts by the well known skipper Harold Vanderbilt. Great detail on the actual races against the 3 other potential defenders (Yankee, Whirlwind, and Weetamoe) and the defense against Shamrock V, the last of the Sir Thomas Lipton challenges. You can visualize being on board and seeing the tactics that won or lost each race.
